How accountants use these tools
Most of these tools replace a spreadsheet you would otherwise rebuild every month. The depreciation calculator gives the annual and monthly straight-line charge, the prepaid amortization calculator shows the monthly amount, what has been recognized to date and what remains, and the cost allocation tool splits a shared cost across departments by the percentages you set.
The three days calculators work together. DSO shows how long customers take to pay, DIO how long stock sits before it is sold, and DPO how long you take to pay suppliers. DSO plus DIO minus DPO is your cash conversion cycle: the number of days your own cash is tied up in operations.
Margin and markup are easy to confuse in a pricing discussion. The margin calculator shows both from the same cost and price, so a 25% markup is never mistaken for a 25% margin.
Frequently asked questions
Are the accounting tools free to use?
Yes. All ten tools are free, need no sign-up and run in your browser.
Do these tools follow GAAP or IFRS?
The tools do the arithmetic for common methods such as straight-line depreciation and even amortization. Which method you are allowed to use depends on your reporting framework and policy, so confirm that with your auditor.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit divided by the selling price; markup is profit divided by cost. A product that costs 75 and sells for 100 has a 25% margin and a 33.3% markup.
Can I calculate my cash conversion cycle here?
Yes. Run the DSO, DIO and DPO calculators with the same period, then add DSO and DIO and subtract DPO.
