Gross-to-Net Pay Calculator

When you are sketching a hiring budget or answering a candidate's rough question, you sometimes need a quick net figure before payroll runs the real calculation. This gross-to-net calculator takes a gross amount and one combined deduction percent and shows the deduction and the net. It suits founders, HR, and finance teams doing early estimates.

What this accounting tool gives you

The result shows net, deduction, and gross side by side. It is useful for a first conversation or a budget line, but it is a sketch rather than a payslip. Real payroll applies tax brackets, allowances, and contribution caps that a single percentage cannot capture.

What you enter

  • Currency: USD by default, or EUR or GBP (only changes how amounts are formatted)
  • Gross: the gross pay amount for the period, zero or more
  • Deduction (%): one flat combined percent for all deductions, from 0 to 100

Worked example

The tool's example takes a gross amount of $6,400 with a combined deduction of 22%. The deduction is $6,400 × 22% = $1,408, which leaves a net of $4,992. If the real deductions for that employee come in at a different rate, the net will differ, which is why the result is labeled as a sketch.

How does the gross-to-net sketch work?

Deduction = gross × deduction percent ÷ 100. Net = gross − deduction. Both are rounded to the cent.

The tool applies one flat percent to the whole gross amount. It does not know any country's tax brackets, social contributions, allowances, caps, or employer costs. It is a planning sketch only, not a payroll filing, a payslip, or tax advice; confirm actual figures with your payroll provider or tax advisor.

Tips before you use the result

  1. Derive the deduction percent from a recent real payslip at a similar salary for a closer sketch.
  2. Do not reuse one percent across very different salaries; progressive tax means the effective rate changes with pay.
  3. Remember employer costs sit on top of gross; this tool only covers what comes off the employee's side.
  4. Label any figure you share from this tool as an estimate so no one treats it as a payroll commitment.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate net pay from gross pay?

In this sketch, multiply gross pay by one combined deduction percent and subtract the result. With $6,400 gross and a 22% deduction, the deduction is $1,408 and net is $4,992. Actual payroll is more detailed, applying tax brackets, contribution caps, and allowances, so use this only for estimates.

Why does the calculator use only one deduction percent?

It is built for quick planning, where one effective rate is enough to size a budget or give a rough answer. Modeling real deductions requires country-specific rules and personal details that this tool does not collect. For exact net pay, run the figures through your payroll provider.

Is this gross-to-net result tax advice?

No. The result is a single-percent sketch, not a payslip, a payroll filing, or tax advice. It does not apply any national or local tax rules. Treat it as orientation for a conversation, and confirm actual deductions with a payroll specialist or tax advisor.

Does the calculator keep salary figures private?

Yes. Gross and deduction values stay in local storage on the browser you use, so they are not uploaded or linked to an account; no sign-up is involved. On a shared computer, clear the form when you finish so the figures do not stay behind.
