Buyer's guide · Technology
We compared six email security products on published pricing, free plans and trials, deployment model, phishing and BEC detection approach, response automation, and the main limitation a buyer should check before signing.
- Microsoft 365 shops on a budget: Microsoft Defender for Office 365 — Plan 1 lists at $2.00 and Plan 2 at $5.00 per user per month, paid yearly, with a free trial for both plans.
- Security teams that want control: Sublime Security — The managed option covers the first 100 mailboxes free, and detection logic is written in an open rule language you can read and edit.
- Mid-market IT teams and MSPs: Ironscales — Offers a 14-day free trial and API deployment with no MX record changes, with SAT and phishing simulation available in higher tiers.
- Collaboration-heavy companies: Check Point Harmony Email & Collaboration — Protects email plus Teams, Slack, SharePoint, OneDrive and Google Drive from one API-based console, with a 14-day trial.
- Large enterprises facing BEC: Abnormal AI — Behavioral baselines per employee and vendor target payment fraud and impersonation, deployed via API with no MX changes.
Email security software sits between your mail platform and your users to stop phishing, business email compromise (BEC), malware attachments, malicious links and account takeover. Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace include baseline filtering, but targeted attacks such as vendor invoice fraud, QR code phishing and executive impersonation often carry no malicious payload at all, so they slip past signature-based filters. Modern tools add behavioral analysis, post-delivery remediation and user reporting workflows. Buyers range from 50-person firms that want a cheap upgrade to their Microsoft licenses, to MSPs managing hundreds of tenants, to enterprises replacing a legacy secure email gateway with an API-based layer that reads mailbox context.
We looked at six fields for every product: published pricing, free plan or trial, deployment model, detection approach, response and remediation, and the main limitation. The order runs from self-serve tools with published prices or free tiers to quote-led enterprise platforms; it is a practical buyer order, not a quality ranking. Prices and plan details were checked on each vendor's official pricing, product or documentation pages on 12 October 2026. Where a vendor does not publish prices, we say Quote-based rather than repeat third-party estimates. All prices are in USD unless stated.

The 6 options in detail
Microsoft Defender for Office 365
Best for Microsoft 365 tenantsBest for: Microsoft 365 customers who want stronger phishing and attachment protection without adding a second vendor or console.
| Attribute | Microsoft Defender for Office 365 |
|---|---|
| Published pricing | Plan 1 $2.00 and Plan 2 $5.00 per user per month, annual subscription that auto-renews; also included in Microsoft 365 E5 |
| Free plan or trial | Free trial for Plan 1 and Plan 2; credit card required and the trial converts to paid unless cancelled |
| Deployment model | Native to Microsoft 365; covers Exchange Online email plus Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive |
| Detection approach | Safe Links and Safe Attachments for malicious URLs, QR codes and zero-day files, plus language model-based phishing analysis |
| Response and remediation | Plan 2 adds automated investigation and response, threat hunting, campaign views and attack simulation training |
| Main limitation | Microsoft 365 only; tuning policies and reading reports takes admin time, and Google Workspace is not covered |
- Lowest published entry price on this page at $2.00 per user per month for Plan 1, billed yearly.
- Plan 2 bundles attack simulation training and automated investigation, which can remove the need for a separate phishing simulation tool.
- It only protects Microsoft 365, and its policy model is complex enough that many smaller tenants run it with default settings that leave gaps.
Our take: Defender for Office 365 is the default starting point for any company already on Microsoft 365, because it plugs into the same admin center, the same identities and the same alerting pipeline you already use. Plan 1 covers Safe Links, Safe Attachments and protection for internal email and Teams, while Plan 2 adds the investigation and simulation tools that a security team needs. Many companies already own it through Microsoft 365 E5 or Business Premium bundles, so check your licenses before buying anything. In a trial, review the preset security policies, test how quarantine notifications reach users, and measure how many BEC-style messages with no link or attachment still reach inboxes. If gaps remain, an API-based layer such as Sublime, Ironscales or Abnormal can sit on top of Defender rather than replace it, which is a common pattern for mid-market and enterprise buyers on this page.
Sublime Security
Best for teams that want rule controlBest for: Security teams that want transparent, editable detection logic and a free starting tier for smaller mailbox counts.
| Attribute | Sublime Security |
|---|---|
| Published pricing | Quote-based beyond the free allowance; the managed option lists the first 100 mailboxes as free |
| Free plan or trial | First 100 mailboxes free on the managed cloud option; self-managed Docker install supports up to 600 active mailboxes |
| Deployment model | Managed cloud, or self-managed on Docker, AWS CloudFormation or Azure; connects to Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or IMAP |
| Detection approach | Detection rules written in Message Query Language (MQL) with community rule feeds and YARA support |
| Response and remediation | Automated actions such as quarantine, trash, warning banners, webhooks and alerts |
| Main limitation | Rule-based model rewards teams with detection engineering skills; smaller IT teams may prefer a more hands-off product |
- Official documentation states the managed option covers the first 100 mailboxes free, which lets small teams run it in production at no cost.
- Detection logic is visible and editable in MQL, so analysts can see exactly why a message was flagged and write their own rules.
- Pricing above the free allowance is not published, and getting full value requires someone who will read, tune and write detection rules.
Our take: Sublime takes a different approach from most email security vendors: instead of a black-box model, detections are rules written in its Message Query Language and shared through community feeds, and you can inspect or modify every one of them. That suits security teams that already run detection engineering for endpoints or cloud logs and want the same discipline for email. Deployment is flexible, from the managed cloud service to self-hosting on Docker, AWS or Azure, which matters for organizations with data residency rules. The free allowance for the first 100 mailboxes on the managed option makes it easy to test against real mail flow. In a pilot, compare its catches with what Defender or Google already blocks, check how much rule tuning your team needs to do each week, and ask for written pricing for your full mailbox count before you commit.
Ironscales
Best for mid-market teams and MSPsBest for: Mid-market IT teams and MSPs who want API-based phishing protection plus optional awareness training in one product.
| Attribute | Ironscales |
|---|---|
| Published pricing | Quote-based; tiers include Email Essentials, Email Protect, Email Protect 360 and Complete Protect, with no prices shown |
| Free plan or trial | 14-day free trial; free email health scan also offered |
| Deployment model | API integration with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace; no DNS or MX changes and can run alongside an existing gateway |
| Detection approach | AI phishing, BEC and VIP impersonation detection combined with crowdsourced threat intelligence from reported emails |
| Response and remediation | Autonomous remediation, alert banners and an Outlook report-phishing add-in; higher tiers add encryption, DLP and ATO protection |
| Main limitation | No published prices, and the tier structure differs between direct business plans and MSP plans |
- Official pricing page lists separate business and MSP plan lines, including Complete Protect with integrated security awareness training and unlimited phishing simulation.
- Deploys via API with no MX record changes and can coexist with a secure email gateway.
- Prices are not published, so you need a quote to compare it with the per-user list prices from Microsoft.
Our take: Ironscales combines automated email threat detection with a strong user reporting loop: employees flag suspicious messages, the platform clusters similar emails across mailboxes and can remove them automatically. That design helps lean IT teams that do not have a dedicated SOC analyst reviewing every report. The plan ladder runs from Email Essentials with phishing and BEC detection up to Complete Protect, which adds account takeover protection and security awareness training with unlimited phishing simulation, so you can consolidate two tools into one contract. MSPs get their own plan line. During the 14-day trial, connect it in read-only or detect mode first, compare its catches against your current filter, and test how quickly reported phishing is pulled from other inboxes. Compared with Abnormal, it is more accessible to mid-market buyers; compared with Sublime, it requires less rule work.
Check Point Harmony Email & Collaboration
Best for email plus collaboration appsBest for: Companies that need one API-based layer protecting email and collaboration apps such as Teams, Slack, SharePoint and Google Drive.
| Attribute | Check Point Harmony Email & Collaboration |
|---|---|
| Published pricing | Quote-based; bundled and a la carte options priced per user per month, with minimum seat requirements |
| Free plan or trial | Free 14-day trial and demo |
| Deployment model | API-based inline protection for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, formerly sold as Avanan |
| Detection approach | Machine learning anti-phishing that analyzes 300 plus indicators per message, plus antivirus and sandboxing |
| Response and remediation | Account takeover protection, DLP policies and post-delivery removal of malicious messages |
| Main limitation | No published price, and a la carte add-ons such as DLP, encryption and sandboxing can raise the total |
- Covers Exchange Online, Gmail, OneDrive, SharePoint, Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, Teams and Slack according to Check Point admin documentation.
- Inline API mode inspects messages before they reach the inbox rather than only removing them afterward.
- Minimum seat licenses apply and the package mix of bundles and add-ons makes quote comparison more work.
Our take: Harmony Email & Collaboration began as Avanan, which Check Point acquired in 2021, and it remains an API-first product that connects to Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace in minutes. Its main difference from the other API tools on this page is breadth: the same policies and console extend to file sharing and messaging apps, so a malicious link dropped into Slack or a poisoned file in SharePoint gets the same treatment as an email. The inline mode can hold messages for inspection before delivery, which some buyers prefer to post-delivery clawback. In the 14-day trial, check which add-ons you actually need, because DLP, encryption and sandboxing are offered a la carte, and confirm the minimum seat count for your size. Companies already using Check Point firewalls or Harmony endpoint products gain the most from shared management and threat intelligence.
Abnormal AI
Best for enterprise BEC defenseBest for: Large organizations where vendor fraud, executive impersonation and account takeover are the main email risks.
| Attribute | Abnormal AI |
|---|---|
| Published pricing | Quote-based; no prices published |
| Free plan or trial | No self-serve trial; demo, product tour and a proof-of-value against your current solution |
| Deployment model | API connection to Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace; no agents and no MX record changes |
| Detection approach | Behavioral AI builds a baseline for each employee and vendor and flags messages that deviate from it |
| Response and remediation | Automatic removal of malicious messages, explanations of which signals fired, plus account takeover and email DLP modules |
| Main limitation | Enterprise-oriented sales process and pricing; smaller firms may find the entry point high |
- Reads identity, behavioral and content signals, including authentication events and internal threads that a gateway cannot see.
- Product line extends to account takeover protection, AI phishing coaching and misdirected email prevention.
- There is no published price or self-serve trial, so evaluation runs through a sales-led proof of value.
Our take: Abnormal AI, which rebranded from Abnormal Security, is built around the idea that the hardest email attacks look normal: no malware, no bad link, just a convincing request from a real or spoofed supplier. Its models learn how each employee and vendor normally communicates, then flag invoices, bank detail changes and urgent requests that do not fit that pattern. Because it connects via API, it can also see sign-in events and internal mail that a gateway in front of the mailbox never sees. The proof of value process runs it alongside your existing tools and reports the attacks your current setup missed, which gives you hard numbers for a business case. Ask for per-mailbox pricing at your size, check how verdicts are explained to analysts, and confirm how vendor email compromise cases are handled. It sits at the enterprise end of this list together with Proofpoint.
Proofpoint Core Email Protection
Best for large hybrid mail estatesBest for: Enterprises that want gateway and API protection from one vendor, with optional DLP, fraud defense and awareness training.
| Attribute | Proofpoint Core Email Protection |
|---|---|
| Published pricing | Quote-based; no prices on the product page |
| Free plan or trial | No free trial listed; demo on request |
| Deployment model | Secure email gateway inline, API-based via Microsoft Graph, or both combined; API deployment stated at 48 hours |
| Detection approach | Behavioral AI for phishing, BEC and evasive attacks across Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace |
| Response and remediation | Post-delivery remediation, plus related modules for email fraud defense, adaptive email DLP and account takeover |
| Main limitation | Enterprise contracts and many add-on modules make total cost hard to estimate without a quote |
- Supports inline gateway, API-based and combined deployment, covering pre-delivery, in-mailbox, post-delivery and click-time protection.
- Adjacent modules include Email Fraud Defense for lookalike domains and DMARC, Adaptive Email DLP and ZenGuide awareness training.
- No published pricing or trial, and the breadth of modules means scoping takes time.
Our take: Proofpoint is a long-standing choice for large organizations that route mail through a secure email gateway and want the option to add API-based detection for Microsoft 365 on top. Core Email Protection can run in either mode or both, which suits companies with hybrid or on-premises mail, complex routing rules, or regulatory requirements for inline filtering. Its ecosystem is the broadest on this page: DMARC and lookalike domain monitoring, outbound DLP, account takeover detection and the ZenGuide training platform all sit in the same family. The tradeoff is cost and complexity, so scope carefully. In a demo, ask which modules are needed for your risk profile, how the API and gateway layers share verdicts, and what professional services are included. Smaller companies usually get better value from Defender, Ironscales or Harmony; Proofpoint fits when scale and routing complexity are high.
How to choose email security software
Start from what you already own
Before buying anything, list the email security features already in your Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace licenses. Many Microsoft customers already have Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 or Plan 2 through Business Premium or E5 bundles and have never tuned it. Turning on preset security policies, Safe Links and Safe Attachments may close a large share of the gap at no extra cost. Then run a short test with an API-based tool in detect-only mode to see what still gets through. That measured gap, not a vendor demo, should decide whether you need another layer.
Choose a deployment model
Secure email gateways sit in front of your mailboxes via MX records and inspect messages before delivery. API-based tools connect to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace directly, need no MX changes, and can see internal mail, sign-in events and messages already delivered. Most mid-market buyers now choose API-based protection layered on native filtering. Gateways still make sense for complex routing, on-premises mail servers or rules that require inline filtering. Some vendors, including Proofpoint, Mimecast and Check Point, offer both modes, which can help during a migration.
Test BEC and payload-free attacks
Most products catch known malware and obvious phishing. The real difference shows up with business email compromise, vendor invoice fraud, gift card scams and QR code phishing, where there is no malicious file or link. Ask each vendor how it detects a changed bank account request from a genuine supplier mailbox, and run your pilot long enough to see real attempts. Behavioral tools such as Abnormal, and products with strong impersonation models, should show measurable catches that your current filter missed. Insist on seeing examples from your own mail, not marketing samples.
Check the response workflow
Detection is only half the job. Look at what happens after a message is flagged: does the tool remove it from every inbox automatically, warn the user with a banner, or wait for an analyst? Review the user report button, how reported messages are triaged, and whether similar messages are clustered and pulled at once. For small IT teams, automated remediation and clear verdict explanations save hours each week. For SOC teams, check SIEM and SOAR integrations, audit logs and the ability to search and purge messages across the tenant.
Compare total cost, not list price
Per-user list prices are only part of the cost. Ask about seat minimums, multi-year discounts, add-ons for DLP, encryption, archiving or awareness training, and whether MSP pricing differs. Count the admin hours needed to tune rules or review quarantines, because a cheaper tool that generates many false positives can cost more in practice. Where a vendor bundles security awareness training, compare that bundle with a standalone training product. Get written quotes for your exact mailbox count and term before you shortlist.
How email security software pricing works
Almost every email security product is priced per user or per mailbox, usually per month but billed annually. Microsoft is the clearest example of published pricing: Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 lists at $2.00 and Plan 2 at $5.00 per user per month on an annual subscription, and both are included in some Microsoft 365 suites such as E5. Specialist vendors such as Ironscales, Check Point, Abnormal and Proofpoint do not publish prices on their websites, so you need a quote. Quotes typically vary by mailbox count, contract length, selected modules and whether you buy direct or through a reseller or MSP.
Free tiers and trials differ widely. Sublime Security documents that its managed option covers the first 100 mailboxes free, which is unusual in this market. Ironscales and Check Point Harmony Email & Collaboration offer 14-day free trials, and Microsoft offers trials of both Defender plans with a credit card on file. Enterprise-focused vendors such as Abnormal run a proof of value instead: the product runs beside your current tools for a set period and the vendor reports what it caught. Treat a proof of value as a serious project with clear success criteria agreed in advance.
Watch for add-on costs. Email encryption, outbound DLP, archiving, account takeover protection and security awareness training are often separate line items or higher tiers. Check Point notes minimum seat requirements, and Ironscales offers discounted annual plans compared with monthly ones. Ask each vendor to price the same scope so your comparison is like for like.

Buying tip
Run any new email security tool in detect-only mode for at least two weeks before switching on automatic removal, and ask the vendor for a written report of what it caught that your current filter missed. That evidence makes the business case and exposes false positives early.
Email Security Software: frequently asked questions
Do I need email security software if I use Microsoft 365?
Microsoft 365 includes Exchange Online Protection, which filters spam and known malware, but targeted phishing and business email compromise often get through. Defender for Office 365 adds Safe Links, Safe Attachments and impersonation protection at $2.00 or $5.00 per user per month on annual plans. Many organizations then add an API-based tool for behavioral BEC detection. Run a detect-only pilot to measure what reaches inboxes today before deciding how many layers you need.
What is the difference between a secure email gateway and API-based email security?
A secure email gateway receives mail first by changing your MX records, inspects each message, and forwards clean mail to your mailboxes. API-based security connects directly to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, needs no MX changes, and can scan internal email, review messages after delivery and read sign-in events. API tools deploy faster and see more context, while gateways provide inline control for complex routing and on-premises mail. Several vendors offer both.
How much does email security software cost per user?
Published list prices are rare. Microsoft Defender for Office 365 lists Plan 1 at $2.00 and Plan 2 at $5.00 per user per month, paid yearly. Sublime Security documents that the first 100 mailboxes are free on its managed option. Ironscales, Check Point Harmony, Abnormal AI and Proofpoint are quote-based, with prices that depend on mailbox count, term, modules and channel. Ask every vendor for a quote covering the same scope and term.
Can email security tools stop business email compromise?
They can reduce it substantially but not eliminate it. BEC messages often contain no link or attachment, so detection relies on identity, behavior and language analysis, such as spotting a supplier asking to change bank details for the first time. Behavioral tools like Abnormal AI focus on this. You still need finance controls such as call-back verification for payment changes, because no filter catches every compromised genuine account.
Will adding an API-based tool slow down email delivery?
Most API-based tools inspect messages as they arrive in the mailbox and remove threats within seconds, so users rarely notice a delay. Some, such as Check Point Harmony Email & Collaboration, offer an inline mode that holds messages briefly before delivery for inspection. Gateways add a hop in the mail path, which is usually measured in seconds. Ask each vendor for typical processing times and test them during your trial.
Should email security and security awareness training come from the same vendor?
Bundling can simplify contracts and connect training to real reported threats. Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 2 includes attack simulation training, Ironscales Complete Protect adds awareness training and unlimited phishing simulation, and Proofpoint offers ZenGuide. A specialist training platform may still offer richer content or better engagement. Compare the bundled module against standalone training tools before you assume the bundle is enough.
