Buyer's guide Β· Technology

We compared six network monitoring tools on published pricing, free editions and trials, licensing unit, deployment model, core network capabilities, and the main limitation a buyer should weigh before shortlisting.

By Kurums EditorialPricing checked 12 October 2026Updated 13 October 2026How we make money
TL;DR
  • Teams with Linux skills and no budget: Zabbix β€” Open source under AGPLv3 from version 7.0, free to self-host, with an optional Zabbix Cloud from $50 per month.
  • Small and mid-sized IT teams on Windows: PRTG Network Monitor β€” Free edition up to 100 sensors, 30-day unrestricted trial, and paid plans from $200 per month billed annually for 500 sensors.
  • Cloud-first engineering teams: Datadog Network Monitoring β€” Network Device Monitoring lists at $7 per device per month billed annually, alongside the infrastructure and APM data you may already send to Datadog.
  • MSPs and lean network teams: Auvik β€” Automated discovery and live topology maps across 700 plus device vendors, with a 14-day trial and no credit card.
  • Enterprises with hybrid estates: LogicMonitor β€” Published starting list prices per Hybrid Unit from $16 per month and 3,000 plus integrations across on-premises and cloud.

Network monitoring software watches routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, servers and links so you know when something fails or slows down before users call the help desk. Tools collect data over SNMP, flow protocols such as NetFlow, APIs and agents, then turn it into dashboards, topology maps and alerts. Buyers range from a two-person IT team at a 200-employee company, to MSPs watching dozens of client networks, to enterprise network operations centers that need to correlate network issues with cloud and application performance. The main decisions are whether to self-host or use SaaS, how the product counts what it monitors, and how much configuration work your team can absorb.

We assessed every product on six fields: published pricing, free plan or trial, licensing unit, deployment model, core network capabilities, and main limitation. Products run from free and self-hosted tools with published prices to quote-led enterprise platforms; that is a practical buyer order, not a quality ranking. Prices and editions were checked on official vendor pricing, product and documentation pages on 12 October 2026. When a vendor does not publish a price we say Quote-based. Prices are in USD unless the vendor publishes another currency.

The 6 options in detail

1

Zabbix

Best for free self-hosted monitoring

Best for: IT teams with Linux and database skills that want full-featured monitoring without license fees.

AttributeZabbix
Published pricingSoftware free; Zabbix Cloud tiers start at $50 (Nano) and run to $5,000 (2xLarge) per month, 10% off annual
Free plan or trialOpen source with no license fee; Zabbix Cloud free trial of 5 days
Licensing unitNo per-device fee for self-hosted; Zabbix Cloud priced by tier and configuration
Deployment modelSelf-hosted on your own servers, or managed Zabbix Cloud
Core network capabilitiesSNMP, agents, IPMI, templates, network discovery, maps, triggers and escalations
Main limitationSelf-hosting means you own setup, scaling, database tuning and upgrades
  • Released under AGPLv3 from version 7.0 (GPLv2 up to 6.4), so you can run it in production with no license cost.
  • Zabbix Cloud gives a managed option with published starting prices if you do not want to run servers.
  • There is no vendor-run helpdesk unless you buy a support subscription, and initial template and trigger design takes real effort.

Our take: Zabbix is a mature, fully open source monitoring platform that handles networks, servers, virtual machines and applications from one server and database. You define hosts, apply templates for common device types, and let low-level discovery find interfaces and sensors automatically. Because there is no per-device fee, it scales economically to thousands of devices, which is why many service providers and universities use it. The tradeoff is ownership: your team installs it, sizes the database, tunes triggers to avoid alert floods, and handles upgrades. Zabbix Cloud removes the infrastructure work, starting at $50 per month for the smallest tier, with a 5-day trial. Before choosing it, run a proof of concept on a representative slice of your network and see how long it takes to get clean dashboards. Compared with PRTG, it is cheaper at scale but needs more hands-on Linux administration.

2

PRTG Network Monitor

Best for small and mid-sized IT teams

Best for: Small and mid-sized IT teams that want an all-in-one tool with predictable sensor-based pricing.

AttributePRTG Network Monitor
Published pricingPRTG 500 $200, PRTG 1000 $358, PRTG 2500 $742, PRTG 5000 $1,300, PRTG 10000 $1,642 per month, billed annually
Free plan or trialFreeware edition up to 100 sensors (about 10 devices); 30-day trial with no sensor limit
Licensing unitSensors, where one sensor is one monitored metric such as a port, ping or bandwidth reading
Deployment modelPRTG Network Monitor self-hosted, plus Hosted Monitor, Enterprise Monitor and an MSP edition
Core network capabilitiesSNMP, NetFlow, custom sensors, live maps, dashboards and threshold alerts by email, push or HTTP
Main limitationSensor counts grow quickly, so a 50-device network can need a 500-sensor plan or more
  • Official pricing page lists five subscription tiers with exact monthly prices billed annually.
  • The 30-day trial has no restriction on sensors or devices, so you can size your real sensor count before buying.
  • Sensor-based licensing is easy to outgrow, and Paessler estimates about 10 sensors per device.

Our take: PRTG from Paessler is a common first serious monitoring tool for IT departments because it bundles discovery, SNMP and flow monitoring, maps and alerting in one installer with sensible defaults. You add a device, PRTG suggests sensors, and within an hour you have uptime and bandwidth graphs. The freeware edition covers up to 100 sensors, enough for a small office, and paid subscriptions start at $200 per month billed annually for 500 sensors, roughly 50 devices by Paessler's own estimate. The licensing unit is the main thing to plan: each interface, ping, disk and service is a separate sensor, so trim unnecessary ones. During the 30-day trial, monitor your whole network, then count the sensors you actually need. PRTG is easier to start with than Zabbix and cheaper to budget for than LogicMonitor or SolarWinds, but large enterprises may outgrow its architecture.

3

Datadog Network Monitoring

Best for cloud-first engineering teams

Best for: Engineering and SRE teams that already use Datadog and want network data next to infrastructure and application metrics.

AttributeDatadog Network Monitoring
Published pricingNetwork Device Monitoring $7 per device per month annual or $10.20 on-demand; Cloud Network Monitoring $5 per host annual
Free plan or trial14-day free trial with unlimited monitoring and no credit card
Licensing unitPer network device for device monitoring; per host for cloud network monitoring
Deployment modelSaaS platform with the Datadog Agent collecting from devices on your network
Core network capabilitiesAutomatic device discovery, SNMP metrics, device health, configuration change review and device maps
Main limitationUsage-based pricing across many Datadog products can make the total bill hard to predict
  • Datadog's official list pricing publishes both annual and on-demand per-device rates for Network Device Monitoring.
  • Network data correlates with infrastructure, logs and APM in the same platform, which shortens root-cause analysis.
  • Costs rise with every additional product and data volume, and you need an infrastructure plan for many correlation features.

Our take: Datadog's network products make the most sense if your team already uses Datadog for cloud infrastructure or application monitoring. Network Device Monitoring discovers routers, switches and firewalls over SNMP, tracks interface health and bandwidth, and shows device maps and configuration changes, while Cloud Network Monitoring maps traffic between services and hosts. The benefit is a single place to answer whether a slowdown comes from the network, the host or the code. Pricing is transparent per unit, at $7 per device per month on annual billing, but a real deployment often adds infrastructure hosts, logs and NetFlow volume. During the 14-day trial, build the exact dashboards your network team uses and estimate monthly usage before signing. Compared with PRTG or Zabbix, Datadog is faster to roll out for cloud workloads but usually costs more for pure on-premises network monitoring.

4

Auvik

Best for MSPs and lean network teams

Best for: MSPs and small network teams that want automated discovery, mapping and config backup with little setup.

AttributeAuvik
Published pricingQuote-based; custom quote for corporate IT and MSP plans
Free plan or trial14-day trial with unlimited sites and devices and no credit card; live sandbox for students and home users
Licensing unitNot published; quote depends on your environment; unlimited users and sites included
Deployment modelSaaS with a lightweight collector on each network
Core network capabilitiesAutomated discovery, live topology maps, configuration backup and comparison, 64 plus preconfigured alerts
Main limitationNo published price, and depth is network-focused rather than full server and application monitoring
  • Supports 700 plus device vendors and builds topology maps that update automatically as the network changes.
  • Configuration backup keeps a history of device configs so you can compare versions and roll back.
  • Pricing is quote-only and it is not designed to replace a full server and application monitoring platform.

Our take: Auvik is built around the idea that most small network teams and MSPs do not have time to document networks by hand. Once you deploy a collector, it discovers devices, identifies vendors and models, draws a live topology map and starts backing up configurations, often within an hour. That makes it useful for MSPs onboarding new clients and for internal teams that inherited a poorly documented network. It includes 64 plus preconfigured alerts and unlimited users and sites, but pricing requires a custom quote. During the 14-day trial, deploy it at your most complex site, check how accurately it maps VLANs and wireless, and test config restore on a lab switch. Auvik is narrower than Datadog or LogicMonitor, which also cover servers and cloud, and easier to run than Zabbix, so it often sits alongside a separate server monitoring tool.

5

LogicMonitor

Best for enterprise hybrid observability

Best for: Enterprises and large MSPs monitoring on-premises networks, data centers and cloud resources from one SaaS platform.

AttributeLogicMonitor
Published pricingStarting list prices per Hybrid Unit per month: Essentials $16, Advanced $27, Signature with Edwin AI $53
Free plan or trial15-day free trial of any plan
Licensing unitHybrid Unit: one collector-monitored device, one cloud IaaS resource, seven PaaS resources or five wireless access points
Deployment modelSaaS platform with collectors installed on your networks
Core network capabilitiesHybrid observability across networks, servers, cloud and SaaS; 3,000 plus integrations; Edwin AI event correlation
Main limitationEssentials limited to 999 Hybrid Units, and add-ons such as AI agents require a sales conversation
  • Publishes starting list prices per Hybrid Unit, which is rare at the enterprise end of this market.
  • Edwin AI groups related events across domains into fewer, explained incidents to reduce alert noise.
  • Actual pricing varies with volume and contract terms, and advanced AI and add-on features cost more.

Our take: LogicMonitor is a SaaS observability platform aimed at enterprises and MSPs that run a mix of data centers, branch networks and public cloud. Collectors sit inside each network and discover devices, while cloud integrations pull metrics from AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, so network, server and cloud health appear in one place. Its Hybrid Unit licensing tries to normalize very different resources, for example five wireless access points count as one unit. Starting list prices are published, from $16 per unit per month on Essentials, though LogicMonitor notes that real pricing depends on volume and terms. In the 15-day trial, connect a representative mix of network gear and cloud accounts, review how many Hybrid Units you consume, and test Edwin AI correlation on a noisy alert source. It costs more than PRTG but covers far more than network devices.

6

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor

Best for large on-premises networks

Best for: Enterprises with large on-premises networks and teams already familiar with the SolarWinds platform.

AttributeSolarWinds Network Performance Monitor
Published pricingQuote-based; contact sales for a custom quote
Free plan or trialFully functional free trial for 30 days
Licensing unitNot published on the product page
Deployment modelSelf-hosted Orion-based module; capabilities also available in SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted
Core network capabilitiesMulti-vendor fault, availability and performance monitoring with network maps and alerting
Main limitationNo public pricing, and on-premises deployment means you run the servers and database
  • Offers a fully functional 30-day trial, so you can test on production gear before talking price.
  • Features are also available as part of SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted for teams that want a broader suite.
  • Pricing is not published and the self-hosted Orion architecture needs dedicated server and database administration.

Our take: SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is a long-standing self-hosted tool for enterprise network teams, built on the Orion platform and now also offered as part of SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted. It handles large multi-vendor estates with deep SNMP polling, hop-by-hop path analysis, network maps and detailed alerting, and integrates with other SolarWinds modules for configuration, traffic and IP address management. Many network engineers already know it, which reduces training time. The tradeoffs are a quote-only price and the work of running servers and SQL databases on-premises. Use the 30-day trial to check polling performance at your scale, verify the security hardening guidance for your environment, and get pricing for the exact modules you need. Compared with LogicMonitor, it keeps data on your own infrastructure; compared with PRTG, it targets larger teams with more specialized network roles.

How to choose network monitoring software

Understand the licensing unit

Network monitoring tools count what they monitor in very different ways: sensors in PRTG, devices in Datadog, Hybrid Units in LogicMonitor, hosts in Checkmk, or nothing at all in self-hosted Zabbix. The same network can cost very different amounts depending on the unit. Before you compare quotes, inventory your devices, interfaces, wireless access points and cloud resources, then translate that inventory into each vendor's unit. Ask vendors to price the same environment and to explain how growth, such as a new branch office, changes the bill.

Decide between self-hosted and SaaS

Self-hosted tools such as Zabbix, PRTG Network Monitor and SolarWinds NPM keep data on your own servers and avoid per-month SaaS fees, but your team handles installation, database sizing, backups and upgrades. SaaS tools such as Datadog, Auvik and LogicMonitor need only lightweight collectors on your networks and update automatically, but data leaves your environment and costs scale with usage. Consider your security policies, staff skills and whether you already run a SaaS observability platform for applications and cloud.

Check discovery and mapping depth

Good discovery saves weeks of manual setup. Test how each tool identifies device vendors and models, discovers interfaces, VLANs and wireless access points, and draws topology maps. Auvik emphasizes automated live maps, while Zabbix relies on templates and low-level discovery rules that you configure. Check whether maps update automatically when the network changes and whether you can export documentation for audits. For MSPs, confirm that discovery works cleanly across many client sites without overlapping IP ranges causing confusion.

Plan alerting to avoid noise

Alert fatigue is a common reason monitoring projects fail. Review default alert templates, dependency handling so a failed core switch does not trigger hundreds of downstream alerts, and integrations with paging and ticketing tools. LogicMonitor's Edwin AI and Datadog's correlation features aim to group related events. With Zabbix or PRTG you tune triggers and thresholds yourself. During a trial, connect alerts to a test channel, watch for a week, and measure how many alerts were actionable.

Look beyond the network if needed

Some buyers only need router, switch and firewall visibility, while others want servers, applications and cloud services in the same tool. Network-focused tools such as Auvik and SolarWinds NPM go deep on network devices. Datadog and LogicMonitor cover infrastructure, cloud and applications as well, and Zabbix and PRTG monitor servers alongside networks. Decide whether you want one platform or best-of-breed tools, because consolidating can cut cost and context switching but may sacrifice specialist depth.

How network monitoring software pricing works

Network monitoring is one of the few software categories where several vendors publish real prices. Paessler lists PRTG subscriptions from $200 per month for 500 sensors to $1,642 per month for 10,000 sensors, all billed annually. Datadog lists Network Device Monitoring at $7 per device per month billed annually or $10.20 on-demand, and Cloud Network Monitoring at $5 per host per month annually. LogicMonitor publishes starting list prices per Hybrid Unit, from $16 on Essentials to $53 on Signature with Edwin AI, while noting that real pricing varies by volume and terms.

Free options are strong in this category. Zabbix is open source under AGPLv3 from version 7.0 and has no license fee when self-hosted, while Zabbix Cloud tiers start at $50 per month. Checkmk Community, another open source option licensed under GPLv2, is free for smaller infrastructures, with paid Pro and higher editions priced in euros. PRTG's freeware edition covers 100 sensors. Trials range from 5 days for Zabbix Cloud to 14 days for Datadog and Auvik, 15 days for LogicMonitor and 30 days for PRTG and SolarWinds NPM.

Quote-based vendors include Auvik and SolarWinds NPM. When comparing, include the cost of servers and staff time for self-hosted tools, and usage growth for SaaS tools, so your three-year total reflects reality rather than the first-year list price.

Buying tip

Before you request quotes, export a device inventory with counts of interfaces, access points and cloud resources. Translating that single list into sensors, devices and Hybrid Units is the fastest way to compare vendors that license monitoring in completely different ways.

Network Monitoring Software: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between network monitoring and observability?

Network monitoring focuses on the availability and performance of routers, switches, firewalls, links and wireless, mostly through SNMP and flow data. Observability platforms add servers, containers, applications, logs and traces so you can trace a user-facing problem across layers. Tools such as Datadog and LogicMonitor cover both, while Auvik and SolarWinds NPM concentrate on the network. Choose based on whether your network team works on its own or alongside application and cloud teams.

Is there free network monitoring software for business use?

Yes. Zabbix is open source under AGPLv3 from version 7.0 and can be used in production without license fees. Checkmk Community is free and open source under GPLv2 for smaller infrastructures. PRTG offers a freeware edition limited to 100 sensors, roughly 10 devices. Free tools still carry costs in servers, setup time and maintenance, and paid support subscriptions are available from the vendors if you need guaranteed help.

How many PRTG sensors do I need?

Paessler estimates about 10 sensors per device, which is how its pricing page maps PRTG 500 to roughly 50 devices and PRTG 1000 to roughly 100 devices. Each monitored metric, such as a ping, an interface, a disk or a service, counts as a sensor. The 30-day trial has no sensor limit, so the practical approach is to monitor your network fully during the trial, remove sensors you do not need, and then pick a tier.

What is a LogicMonitor Hybrid Unit?

A Hybrid Unit is LogicMonitor's licensing measure. According to its pricing page, one unit equals one device monitored through an on-premises collector, one cloud IaaS resource, seven cloud PaaS resources or five wireless access points. Starting list prices are $16 per unit per month on Essentials, $27 on Advanced and $53 on Signature with Edwin AI. Actual pricing can vary with volume and contract terms.

Do SaaS network monitoring tools need software inside my network?

Usually yes. SaaS tools such as Auvik and LogicMonitor install a lightweight collector on each network, and Datadog uses its Agent to poll devices over SNMP and send data to the cloud. The collector makes outbound connections to the vendor, so you rarely need inbound firewall rules. Check where data is stored, what credentials the collector holds and how it is updated before you deploy it on sensitive segments.

How long does it take to deploy network monitoring software?

Basic discovery and uptime monitoring can be running within hours for SaaS tools like Auvik or Datadog, and PRTG installs on a single Windows server in an afternoon. Tuning alerts, building dashboards and covering every site usually takes several weeks. Self-hosted Zabbix or SolarWinds deployments take longer because you also size servers and databases. Plan a phased rollout starting with core devices and critical links.
