Employee Turnover Rate Calculator
Turnover rate is one of the first numbers leadership asks HR about, and it is easy to calculate inconsistently. This employee turnover rate calculator divides leavers by average headcount for the same period, giving HR managers, founders and finance teams a percentage they can track month to month or year to year.

What this HR tool gives you
The result shows the turnover rate as a percent alongside the leavers and average headcount you used. Put it in the monthly people report with the period written next to it. You will not be asked to log in, and the figures are kept in the browser you are using.
What you enter
- Leavers: the number of employees who left during the period
- Average headcount: the average number of employees during the same period
Worked example
In the example, 8 employees left during the period and average headcount was 40. Turnover rate = 8 ÷ 40 × 100 = 20.0%. The page shows 20.0% next to the 8 leavers and the average headcount of 40, which you would report as a 20% turnover rate for that period.
How is employee turnover rate calculated?
Turnover rate = leavers ÷ average headcount × 100, rounded to two decimals and displayed with one decimal place. Both numbers must cover the same period, whether that is a month, a quarter or a year.
Neither number can be negative. If average headcount is zero, the tool returns a warning because the rate has no divisor. The tool does not split voluntary and involuntary leavers; enter whichever group you want to measure.
Tips before you use the result
- A common way to get average headcount is (headcount at start + headcount at end) ÷ 2 for the period.
- Run it separately for voluntary leavers to see regretted attrition without layoffs mixed in.
- Do not compare a monthly rate with an annual one; write the period next to every figure you report.
- For small teams, one departure moves the rate a lot, so look at the trend over several periods before reacting.
Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for employee turnover rate?
Divide the number of employees who left during a period by the average number of employees in that period, then multiply by 100. This calculator applies that formula exactly: turnover = leavers ÷ average headcount, shown as a percent. Use the same period for both inputs.
How do I calculate average headcount?
A simple method is to add headcount at the start and at the end of the period and divide by two. For more accuracy, average the headcount at the end of each month in the period. The calculator takes the average you provide and does not compute it.
Should I include people who were let go?
That depends on what you want to measure. Total turnover includes everyone who left. Voluntary turnover includes only resignations. The tool treats every leaver you enter the same way, so run it once for each definition if you need both numbers.
Can the turnover rate be over 100%?
Yes. If more people left in the period than the average headcount, for example in a seasonal business with high churn, the rate will exceed 100%. The calculator shows whatever the division gives; it does not cap the result. Check both inputs if that happens.
