Overtime Pay Calculator

Overtime is where payroll mistakes and pay disputes usually start. This overtime pay calculator splits a week's hours into regular and overtime hours, prices each at the right rate and adds them up, so employees can check a payslip and managers or HR can price extra shifts before approving them.

What this HR tool gives you

Set the hourly rate, the hours worked, the point at which overtime starts and the multiplier, such as 1.5 for time and a half or 2 for double time. The result shows total pay, overtime pay, overtime hours and the overtime rate, with a regular-versus-overtime table you can copy.

What you enter

  • Hourly rate: the regular gross rate per hour
  • Hours worked in the week: all hours, including the overtime
  • Overtime starts after (hours): 40 a week under the US FLSA; use your local rule or contract
  • Overtime multiplier: 1.5 for time and a half, 2 for double time

Worked example

At $20 an hour, a 48-hour week with overtime after 40 hours at 1.5x gives 40 regular hours for $800 and 8 overtime hours at $30 for $240. Total pay for the week is $1,040, of which $240 is overtime.

How is overtime pay calculated?

Regular hours = the smaller of hours worked and the threshold. Overtime hours = hours worked − threshold, or zero if the week is under the threshold. Overtime rate = hourly rate × multiplier. Total pay = regular hours × hourly rate + overtime hours × overtime rate.

The tool does not decide who is eligible for overtime, whether a daily threshold applies or whether bonuses belong in the regular rate. Those depend on local wage law and the contract. It prices the week with the numbers you give it, gross before tax.

Tips before you use the result

  1. Check whether your rule is weekly, daily or both; some places count overtime after 8 hours a day as well as 40 a week. Run each day separately if a daily rule applies.
  2. For hours that fall under double time, run the tool a second time with a multiplier of 2 and only those hours above the double-time threshold.
  3. Under US rules, non-discretionary bonuses can raise the regular rate used for overtime; add them to the hourly rate before you run the numbers.
  4. Managers: compare the weekly overtime bill with the cost of a temporary or part-time hire before overtime becomes routine.

Frequently asked questions

What is time and a half?

Time and a half means overtime hours are paid at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate. At $20 an hour, an overtime hour pays $30. Set the multiplier to 1.5 for time and a half, 2 for double time, or any other figure your contract uses.

When does overtime start?

Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn overtime after 40 hours in a workweek. Other countries and some US states use different weekly or daily limits, and contracts can be more generous. Type the threshold that applies to you.

Can salaried employees get overtime?

Some can. In the US, salaried employees below the exemption tests are still owed overtime. Convert the salary to an hourly rate with the salary to hourly calculator, then use that rate here. This tool does not determine exempt status.

Is overtime pay taxed differently?

This calculator shows gross pay only. Overtime is usually taxed as ordinary income, though some places have special rules or deductions. Check your local payroll rules for take-home pay; the gross figures here are what the employer owes before deductions.
