Best On-Call Management Software in 2026: Pricing & Comparison

We compared four on-call vendors on published price, free-plan limits, alert channels, and whether a quote is required.

By Kurums EditorialPricing checked 7 Oct 2026Updated 7 Oct 2026How we make money
TL;DR

  • A $0 personal start, then a responder license: Better Stack β€” free for personal projects; a responder license is $29 a month on the annual view.
  • A free incident seat for up to five people: PagerDuty β€” Free covers up to 5 users and one schedule. A numeric Professional rate did not render on the public page.
  • A published per-user on-call price: Spike β€” Standard is $7 per user a month on yearly billing, with a 14-day trial.
  • On-call as its own line item: incident.io β€” standalone on-call is $20 per user a month; Enterprise response is a proposal.

On-call management software schedules who gets paged, escalates if they do not answer, and records the incident. This comparison is alerting and schedules for engineering and operations teams. It is not a full observability suite and not a status-page-only product, though some vendors sell those beside on-call.

Each company is scored on the same fields: published pricing, free plan or trial, core focus, and the main limitation. The order is not a quality ranking. Providers are sorted with public $0 access first, then the lowest published paid entry, and quote-led vendors last. Better Stack and PagerDuty both publish a free plan; Better Stack is first because it also shows a numeric responder rate.

Published list prices in USD, checked 7 October 2026 on each vendor’s pricing page. Where a numeric paid rate did not render, the cell says so. Confirm the live page before you buy.

Phone and SMS alerts are often capped on the free or entry plan. Unlimited voice is a paid step.

What buyers are comparing

The first question is who can be paged at 3 a.m. without a per-alert surprise. The second is whether schedules, status pages, and incident write-ups are one product or three add-ons. All four vendors publish either a free plan or a per-user list price. incident.io’s Enterprise response plan is the quote-led row.

incident.io

Best for on-call priced next to response

Best for: teams that want a published on-call rate and a separate response plan.

Attribute incident.io

Kurums Match

We page one person and use SlackFree or low seat
Start with Better Stack Free if email and Slack are enough. Move to a responder license when you need phone calls.

Five people, one scheduleFree cap

PagerDuty Free covers up to 5 users and one schedule, with 100 SMS or phone notifications a month.

We want a number before a callList price

Spike publishes Standard at $7 per user a month on yearly billing. incident.io publishes on-call at $20 per user a month.

We need a named CSM and an SLAQuote

incident.io Enterprise is a custom proposal and lists a 99.99% uptime SLA and a designated customer success manager.

Buying tip

Count responders, not the whole company. Better Stack charges the responder license, not every teammate. Spike and incident.io price per user. A 20-person Slack workspace is not automatically a 20-seat on-call bill.

How this comparison was put together

We opened official pricing pages on 7 October 2026 for Better Stack, PagerDuty, Spike, and incident.io. Figures are list prices in USD as shown that day. PagerDuty’s comparison confirmed a free plan and seat cap; it did not show a Professional dollar rate in the fetched page, so that rate is not stated. Order follows the published-price sort, not a quality score. No Kurums Recommends, Top Pick, or Verified badge is used.

FAQ

Is on-call the same as incident management?
No. On-call is who gets alerted and how escalation works. Incident management adds timelines, roles, and post-incident write-ups. Some vendors sell both; the line items are still separate.

Are SMS alerts included in the free plan?

PagerDuty Free includes 100 SMS or phone notifications a month. Better Stack Free lists Slack and email, not phone. Spike’s entry plan includes 100 phone and SMS alerts and is not free.

Does a status page come with on-call?

Better Stack Free includes 1 status page. Spike Standard includes a status page. Confirm the page limit before you promise customers a public status URL.

Why is Opsgenie not here?

Spike’s own pricing page notes an Opsgenie shutdown date of 5 April 2027. This comparison stays with vendors whose pricing pages rendered on 7 October 2026.
