Kurums Applied AI Β· β„–05 Β· Procurement

Every source-to-pay suite now sells AI agents. The evidence is strongest for unglamorous jobs such as intake, invoice matching and tail-spend negotiation, and thinnest for the fully autonomous procurement function vendors put on stage.

TL;DR
  • Intake, invoice matching and spend classification are proven. These are high-volume, rules-heavy tasks where AI has shipped for years and vendors report large customer bases.
  • Tail-spend negotiation bots have real evidence. Walmart's Pactum pilot, documented in 2022, closed deals with 64% of invited suppliers; newer sourcing agents from Fairmarkit, Keelvar and Globality cite big cycle-time cuts, mostly vendor-reported.
  • 2026 is the year of the agent catalogue. Coupa says it has 50+ Navi agents, GEP lists 34, Zip has five Superagents and Ivalua bets on a single agent. Most strategic-sourcing and contract agents are still early.
  • Pricing is shifting. SAP charges AI Units for premium Joule features, Oracle bundles agents at no extra cost, Coupa is moving to flat AI pricing for new customers and Pactum sells a revenue-banded subscription with no savings share.

Procurement is one of the most document-heavy functions in any company: purchase requests, supplier questionnaires, bids, contracts, purchase orders and invoices, all of which must reconcile. That makes it an obvious target for AI, and in 2026 every major source-to-pay (S2P) vendor has rebuilt its pitch around agents that act rather than simply suggest.

Adoption inside procurement teams lags the marketing. A Gartner survey of 101 CPOs published in May 2026 found only 36% were very confident they could redesign roles and processes around AI, and that individual productivity gains shrank considerably at team level.

This article looks at how the main suites (SAP Ariba, Coupa, Oracle, GEP, Ivalua, JAGGAER) and newer players (Zip, Pactum, Fairmarkit, Keelvar, Globality) apply AI across the procure-to-pay chain, what they charge, and where the evidence supports the claims.

How does AI change purchase intake and guided buying?

Intake is where most employees meet procurement, and it is where AI has the clearest payoff. Instead of choosing between a catalogue, a purchase requisition form and an IT security review, the requester types or speaks what they need. The software classifies the request, fills in fields, checks policy and routes it to the right channel or approver.

Zip built its business on this orchestration layer. In June 2026 it launched an Intake Superagent that guides requesters, prefills fields and sends purchases to the right channel, working in Slack, Teams and email. A Forrester Total Economic Impact study commissioned for Zip, based on four large enterprises, modelled a 70% cut in time spent submitting and approving requests.

The incumbents are catching up. SAP planned general availability of a Joule agent for SAP Ariba Intake Management in June 2026, handling chat, email and Teams requests and categorising spend before a buyer sees them. Coupa bought the orchestration start-up Tonkean in May 2026, and Oracle ships a Procurement Policy Advisor and an agent that turns supplier quotes into requisitions.

Can AI classify spend and find the right suppliers?

Spend classification is the oldest AI use case in procurement. Machine-learning models map messy ledger and invoice lines to a category taxonomy, a job that used to need consultants. Specialists such as Sievo train on pooled community data and pair the model with human data managers, and S2P suites run similar engines inside their analytics modules. Accuracy claims vary and are rarely audited independently, so ask for a sample of your own data to be classified in a pilot.

Supplier discovery and risk monitoring are newer. GEP's Qi platform lists agents for supplier discovery, profile enrichment and risk assessment, drawing on third-party data from TealBook, D&B and Moody's. Coupa's Supplier Onboarding Agent runs sanctions checks and pulls risk data when a user types a supplier name, and its September 2026 release added a fraud agent that screens supplier bank documents for manipulation.

JAGGAER takes a more conservative route. Its JAI assistant, made available to customers in May 2026, answers plain-language questions in 28 languages and flags off-contract buying and supplier risk, grounded only in the customer's own documents and data. JAGGAER says it holds ISO/IEC 42001 certification for its AI management system, a standard buyers can ask other vendors about.

These features are useful, but their quality depends on the external data feeds behind them. A risk score is only as current as the last data refresh, and supplier-matching models favour suppliers already present in a vendor's network.

Do autonomous sourcing and negotiation bots actually save money?

The best-documented case is tail spend: thousands of small contracts that buyers never have time to negotiate. Pactum's chatbot negotiated with Walmart's long-tail suppliers in a pilot reported by Harvard Business Review in 2022 and summarised by Talking Logistics. According to that report, 64% of invited suppliers reached a deal, with average savings of 1.5% and payment terms extended to an average of 35 days.

Since then the category has moved from negotiation to the whole sourcing event. Pactum now sells six digital workers covering intake to purchase order and reports, on its own site, 11% average savings on competed buys. Fairmarkit launched Total Agentic Sourcing in April 2026 in private beta, citing an 85% cut in sourcing cycle time at Emirates Flight Catering. Keelvar runs an orchestrator called Kai with agents that pick the best moment to close a bid event or re-tender when contracted rates expire.

The incumbents now include sourcing agents as standard. Oracle announced an Autonomous Sourcing Agent for small, frequent purchases in February 2026, SAP's Joule Bid Analysis Agent compares offers on total cost, and Globality launched Glo 2.0 in September 2026 with autonomous and collaborative modes. Most savings figures beyond the Walmart pilot are vendor-reported, and strategic categories still need human judgement on awards.

How good is AI at contract analysis?

Contract AI splits into two jobs. Extraction, which pulls dates, prices, renewal terms and obligations out of signed agreements, is mature and widely used. Coupa told its May 2026 conference that one contract agent reviewed more than 21,000 contracts in six months, a figure reported by Incisiv.

Drafting and redlining are harder. Zip's Contract Superagent reviews and redlines against company playbooks and sends high-risk issues to legal, and SAP planned natural-language contract creation in Ariba Contracts for mid-2026. GEP lists separate agents for clause risk, amendments and expiry monitoring. These tools work best when the company already has a clean clause library and a written negotiation playbook; without them the AI has nothing reliable to compare against.

What does AI do in invoice matching and payments?

Invoice processing is where AI has most clearly changed daily work. Modern capture models read PDFs and e-invoices, code them to the ledger and run two- or three-way matching against the purchase order and goods receipt, leaving staff to handle exceptions. At its May 2026 conference Coupa claimed its agents handle 99% of invoices passing through its system, as reported by Incisiv, and it acquired the document-processing firm Rossum in May 2026, which Coupa says reaches over 96% accuracy on invoice workflows.

Payment agents are the next layer. Coupa's September 2026 release added agents that capture early-payment discounts before they expire and answer questions about payment status. One customer ran 14 payment batches worth USD 20.1 million in five weeks, using about USD 27 in AI credits, according to IT Brief. Zip's AP Superagent and GEP's n-way matching agent compete for the same work.

Agent counts are not outcomes

Vendors now compete on how many agents they ship: Coupa claims more than 50, GEP lists 34, and Zip launched 50 task agents in 2025 before folding them into five Superagents. Agent counts say little about results. Almost every savings or cycle-time figure in this market is vendor-reported or comes from studies the vendor commissioned, and the strongest independent evidence, Walmart's Pactum pilot, covers low-value tail spend where 1.5% average savings was enough to call it a success.

Costs and data quality are the other gaps. SAP's AI Units expire after 12 months if unused, and analysts at Coupa's 2026 conference questioned whether value-based AI pricing can be measured to both sides' satisfaction. Intake and sourcing agents also inherit messy supplier masters and category taxonomies. According to a JAGGAER summary of BCG research, procurement had the lowest AI adoption of 13 functions studied, at 35%, a sign that the bottleneck is often process and data rather than software.

How should a company adopt AI in Procurement?

  1. Start with intake and invoicesPick the high-volume, rules-based steps first: request intake, guided buying and invoice matching. Results are easy to measure in cycle time and touchless rate, and errors are caught by existing approvals.
  2. Clean the supplier masterDeduplicate suppliers, fix category codes and document your buying policy before switching on agents. Agents that route requests or pick suppliers will automate whatever errors sit in those records.
  3. Pilot negotiation on the tailRun a negotiation or autonomous RFQ pilot on low-value, non-strategic spend with clear guardrails on price and terms. Measure the acceptance rate, savings and supplier complaints before expanding.
  4. Set autonomy levels by riskUse the assist, advise and act tiers most suites now offer, and keep humans on awards, contract changes and new suppliers above a threshold. Review agent decision logs monthly.
  5. Negotiate AI pricing up frontAsk whether agents are bundled, billed in credits or priced by outcome, and what happens to unused credits. Cap consumption in the contract and require usage reporting.

πŸ’‘ Pro tip: Before signing, ask each vendor for the share of its AI customers using a specific agent in production and one reference you can call, not the total number of agents it ships.

What can software companies learn from how Procurement vendors build AI?

The series looks at AI from both sides of the contract. If you build software, these are the product lessons the procurement vendors have paid for.

Ground agents in your own network data

Coupa sells anonymised community spend data and Sievo trains on pooled customer data. A proprietary dataset makes recommendations harder to copy than a wrapper around a general model.

Separate deterministic from agentic steps

GEP runs three-way matching and regulatory reporting as fixed workflows and saves agents for judgement tasks. Auditors and finance teams accept AI faster when controls stay predictable.

Expose your product through MCP

Zip, Coupa and Ivalua all added Model Context Protocol access in 2026 so outside assistants can query procurement data under existing permissions. Buyers increasingly expect your data to reach the AI tools they already use.

Make pricing predictable

Pactum sells a flat subscription with no savings share, and Coupa moved new customers to flat AI pricing. Finance buyers resist token-based bills they cannot forecast.

What are the risks of AI in Procurement software?

⚠️ Before you switch it on

Disclosure and the EU AI Act. Article 50 transparency duties applied from 2 August 2026, so bots that negotiate with supplier staff should disclose they are AI. Most procurement uses fall outside the Act's Annex III high-risk list, whose rules were delayed to December 2027.

Wrong awards and bad terms. An agent that misreads a bid, accepts non-standard terms or picks a sanctioned supplier creates real liability. Keep approval thresholds and audit decision logs.

Unpredictable AI spend. Credit and AI Unit models can outrun budgets as agents scale, and unused SAP AI Units expire after 12 months.

Suite lock-in. Agents, skills and custom workflows built in one suite's studio rarely move to another, which raises switching costs at renewal.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI in procurement software?

It is the use of machine learning and large language models inside source-to-pay tools to classify spend, handle purchase requests, run sourcing events, review contracts and match invoices. In 2026 most vendors package these as agents that can take actions within approval rules, not just answer questions.

Can AI negotiate with suppliers on its own?

Yes, for routine tail spend. Pactum's Walmart pilot closed deals with 64% of invited suppliers, and Oracle, Coupa, Fairmarkit and Globality now offer autonomous sourcing. Strategic, high-value awards still need human sign-off in every product reviewed here.

How much does procurement AI cost?

Few vendors publish prices. Oracle includes its agents at no extra cost for Fusion subscribers, SAP sells premium Joule features in prepaid AI Units, and Coupa, Zip, GEP, Ivalua and Globality quote individually. Pactum sells an annual subscription priced by company revenue band.

Is AI in procurement covered by the EU AI Act?

Most procurement uses are not on the Act's high-risk list, but transparency duties under Article 50 have applied since August 2026, so AI systems interacting with people must say so. GDPR still applies to supplier contact data, and companies should keep audit trails of automated decisions.

How we judge AI in software

Proven means the feature is generally available, used by a broad customer base and backed by measurable results we could trace. Emerging means it ships but adoption or evidence is thin, mixed or only vendor-reported. Hype means the announcement, demo or marketing claim runs ahead of what customers can verify today.

Every product, price and figure was checked against vendor pages, filings or reputable reporting on 11 October 2026; vendor-reported numbers are labelled as such. No company paid for inclusion or position, and nothing here is a purchase recommendation. Product names and prices in AI software change quickly, so confirm current terms with the vendor before you buy.
