Sales Commission Calculator

What does a rep earn on this period's revenue? This calculator applies a commission rate to revenue and, when you add a quota, attainment, and an accelerator rate, pays the higher rate on revenue above quota. It is built for sales managers, finance teams checking payouts, and reps who want to verify their own statement.

Your entries stay in this browser. Use Fill example to see a finished page first.

What this sales tool gives you

The result shows the commission amount, the attainment percent, and a plain Yes or No on whether the accelerator applied. A short note explains why, including cases where revenue is above quota but the attainment you typed is not, so disagreements about a payout get settled with the same numbers on the table.

What you enter

  • Currency: USD by default, or EUR or GBP
  • Revenue: the revenue commission is paid on, in your currency
  • Commission rate, as a percent from 0 to 100
  • Quota, in your currency (optional; needed before an accelerator can apply)
  • Attainment, as a percent (optional; the accelerator applies only above 100%)
  • Accelerator rate on revenue above quota, as a percent (optional)

Worked example

The tool's example uses $120,000 revenue, a 10% rate, a $100,000 quota, 120% attainment, and a 15% accelerator. The first $100,000 earns 10%, or $10,000. The $20,000 above quota earns 15%, or $3,000. Commission is $13,000, with the accelerator applied. Without the accelerator fields, the same revenue at 10% would pay $12,000.

How is commission with an accelerator calculated?

Without an accelerator, commission = revenue × commission rate ÷ 100.

The accelerator applies only when all of these are true: quota is filled and above zero, the attainment you typed is above 100%, an accelerator rate is filled, and revenue is above quota. Then commission = quota × commission rate + (revenue − quota) × accelerator rate. In other words, the base rate pays up to quota and the accelerator rate pays on the excess.

Attainment shows the percent you typed. If you leave it blank but enter a quota, the tool displays revenue ÷ quota × 100 instead, but a blank attainment means the accelerator does not apply.

Tips before you use the result

  1. Make sure the attainment you type matches revenue ÷ quota; the tool uses the typed figure to decide whether the accelerator applies and does not overwrite it.
  2. Use the revenue your plan actually credits, such as booked, invoiced, or collected, because the choice changes the payout.
  3. The accelerator here is a single rate on everything above quota; if your plan has several tiers, run each tier separately.
  4. Clawbacks, draws, caps, and SPIFs are not modeled, so adjust for them outside the tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is a commission accelerator?

An accelerator is a higher commission rate that applies once a rep passes quota. It rewards overperformance: in the example, revenue up to a $100,000 quota earns 10%, while every dollar above quota earns 15%. In this calculator the accelerator applies only to the revenue above quota, not retroactively to all revenue.

Why didn't the accelerator apply?

It needs four conditions at once: a quota above zero, a typed attainment above 100%, an accelerator rate, and revenue above quota. If any is missing, the tool pays the base rate on all revenue. It also tells you when revenue exceeds quota but the attainment you typed is 100% or lower, or when attainment is above 100% but revenue is not above quota.

Is commission calculated on revenue or on profit?

That depends on your compensation plan. This calculator applies the rate to whatever amount you enter as revenue. If your plan pays on gross margin, enter the margin amount in the revenue field and the quota on the same basis. The math is the same; only the base changes.

Is my commission data sent anywhere?

The figures are held in your browser's own storage on this device and are not tied to any sign-up, since none is required. That makes it practical for a rep checking a statement privately. Clear the form when you are done if you share the computer.

Forecast, Decoded: What It Actually Means

Forecast, Decoded: What It Actually Means

A forecast is a prediction of how much a team or company will sell, earn or spend in a coming period, usually a month or a quarter. In sales it is the number reps and managers expect to close, built from the deals in the pipeline and judgment about which ones will really sign, and it is updated as deals move.

MRR & ARR, Decoded: What It Actually Means

MRR, or monthly recurring revenue, is the predictable income a business expects to earn every month from active subscriptions or contracts. ARR, or annual recurring revenue, is the same idea on a yearly scale, often calculated as MRR times twelve. Both leave out one-time fees, setup charges and other revenue that will not repeat.
