Meta said on June 16, 2026 that Threads reached 500 million monthly active users, and ads are open to all Threads users worldwide after a January 21, 2026 announcement. For B2B teams, a Threads marketing strategy works best as a conversation and awareness plan with a reply routine, not a link-driven lead source: Buffer’s data shows link posts had the lowest median engagement of the formats it measured. Run a 90-day test with a fixed cadence, a few topic tags and a small paid test before committing budget or headcount.
A Threads marketing strategy is a plan for how a brand uses Meta’s text-led network to start conversations, build awareness and recruit, with set formats, topic tags, reply handling, measurement and a decision on paid reach. This guide covers the audience figures Meta has reported, what the API and scheduling tools allow, how ads and links work, and how Threads compares with X, then ends with a 30/60/90 day test plan. It belongs to the Kurums Social Media Marketing Hub, alongside our guides to Instagram marketing strategy, Facebook marketing strategy and WhatsApp Business marketing.
How big is Threads, and who says so?
Meta reported 500 million monthly active users on June 16, 2026. Daily figures come mostly from third-party estimates such as Similarweb, which put Threads ahead of X globally and behind it in the United States in April 2026.
Where should a B2B brand start?
Short text, image and video posts, one topic tag per post, and fast replies. Buffer’s 2025 data associated replying to comments with the largest engagement lift in its dataset.
What does a first test cost?
Mostly staff time. Several tools schedule Threads posts, and ads run through Meta Ads Manager as an added placement.
Why does a Threads marketing strategy deserve a place in your 2026 plan?
Because the audience is large and Meta is building business tools around it. Meta announced on June 16, 2026 that Threads reached 500 million monthly active users, and on its October 21, 2026 earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Threads has overtaken X in monthly actives.
The first four rows below come from Meta. The Similarweb rows are third-party estimates and are directional.
| Metric | Figure | Source and date | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly active users | 500 million | Meta, reported by Forbes and Engadget, June 16, 2026 | Company-reported |
| Monthly actives vs X | Described as “overtaken X,” no number | Mark Zuckerberg, Q3 2026 earnings call, October 21, 2026 | Company statement |
| Time spent per user | Growing “over 20%” year over year | CFO Susan Li, same call | Company-reported |
| Daily active users | 150 million | Last figure Meta shared, October 2025, per Engadget | Company-reported, older |
| Global daily actives, April 2026 | Threads 135.7 million, X 126.9 million | Similarweb, cited by Forbes | Third-party estimate |
| US daily actives, April 2026 | X 21.3 million, Threads 18.3 million | Similarweb, cited by Forbes | Third-party estimate |
Two cautions apply. Meta has not published a daily count since October 2025; Engadget reported the company only said daily actives are “growing strongly year-over-year globally.” And the US picture differs from the global one, which matters if your buyers are concentrated in North America.
Monthly users also say little about buyers. A finance lead at a target account is a small slice of 500 million accounts, and organic posts have no firmographic targeting. Use a structured test to learn whether the scale produces pipeline. For the wider channel question, see our guide to choosing social media platforms and the social media marketing strategy framework.
Which content types work on a brand Threads account?
Threads supports text posts of up to 500 characters, images, video, carousels and polls, with GIFs and text attachments added in 2025. In Buffer’s 2025 data, video and image posts earned the highest median engagement rates, while text-only and link posts trailed.
Meta’s API documentation sets the publishing limits that scheduling tools inherit. Carousels hold 2 to 20 items through the API, although individual tools may cap lower. Images must be JPEG or PNG up to 8 MB. Video can run up to 5 minutes and 1 GB, with 9:16 recommended. See the Threads developer documentation on posts for current parameters.
Buffer’s State of Social Media Engagement report, published March 5, 2026, covers posts published through Buffer with data through December 3, 2025. It put the median Threads engagement rate at about 3.6% for 2025, down roughly 18% from about 4.4% in 2024, calculated as likes, reposts, replies and quotes divided by reach.
For a B2B brand, build a weekly mix. Short opinion posts on a named topic are cheap and invite replies. A chart as an image gives followers something to quote. A short vertical video suits recruiting and thought leadership. Carousels fit checklists, and polls generate replies to follow up. Our social content creation guide covers workflow, and Threads can cross-share to Instagram Stories through the API, a capability Meta added on March 25, 2026.
How do topic tags and communities work on Threads?
Threads uses one topic tag per post instead of Instagram’s multi-hashtag habit. Meta’s developer documentation says a tag must be 1 to 50 characters, cannot contain periods or ampersands, and that only the first valid tag in a post is used. Communities are interest groups that Meta credits as a growth driver in 2026.
The documentation prefers setting the tag as a field over typing a hashtag in the text. A news tracker from SocialBee records that in October 2025 Threads began creating a custom feed from every tag added on a profile and started hiding hashtags in cross-posts from Instagram, so set your Threads topic deliberately instead of relying on Instagram hashtags to carry over.
The same tracker records community testing in South Korea and the United States in October 2025 and a June 2026 launch with Community Champions, a Communities Hub and local communities. As of October 2026 the tracker lists letting users vote to turn tags into communities as in development. Pick two or three tags that match what buyers discuss, use each consistently for a month, and join communities as a contributor, not a broadcaster. We found no Meta documentation on whether business accounts can create communities, so check your account before planning around it.
Does fediverse sharing matter for a brand on Threads?
Fediverse sharing is available but limited, and most brands can treat it as optional. Users can turn on sharing so posts appear on ActivityPub servers such as Mastodon. Per Meta’s help page on fediverse sharing, posts with limited reply settings or unsupported attachments are not shared.
The help page lists constraints that affect measurement. People on other servers can follow and view your profile, but you cannot see who they are, and your follower count includes only Threads followers. You can see how many users on other servers liked a post, not who they are, and replies from other servers are viewed on those servers. Social Media Today reported in June 2025 that Threads added a fediverse feed and search, supporting ActivityPub only, so Bluesky was excluded. We found no later official change.
The fediverse audience is technical and small next to Threads itself, and part of its activity is invisible in your analytics. Sharing costs little if you sell to developers, and is unlikely to matter if you sell to finance or operations buyers. Record the decision in your social policy.
What can the API and scheduling tools do, and how are links handled?
The Threads API supports publishing, reply management, mentions, keyword search and insights, and several scheduling tools use it. Links are allowed, with a limit of five unique links per post through the API since December 22, 2025, and link previews attach only to text-only posts. The Threads API changelog records each change.
From Meta’s documentation, an API-published profile can post up to 250 times and send up to 1,000 replies in a rolling 24-hour window, with a carousel counting as one post. The changelog also lists reply approvals (February 13, 2026), reply and mention webhooks, keyword and topic tag search, and availability for profiles without a linked Instagram account (September 23, 2025). Threads added native in-app scheduling in January 2025, according to Social Media Today.
Third-party tools add calendars, approvals and multi-channel queues. The table draws on each vendor’s own help pages, so verify limits before buying. Our scheduling software comparison covers pricing and workflow.
| Tool | What its documentation says | Noted limits |
|---|---|---|
| Buffer (support page) | Standard scheduling; up to 10 images or one video per post; multi-post threads up to 25 posts in a browser; 500 characters; 250 posts per 24 hours | No scheduling of quotes or reposts; no “best time to post”; Threads not in Analyze, basic likes, replies and views in the Publish tab |
| Later (help center) | Scheduling on all plans; text, image, video and carousel posts; auto publish only; one topic per post | Connecting a Threads profile is desktop only; link previews only on posts without media |
| Hootsuite (vendor page) | States Threads scheduling is in every plan and public comments can be answered from the inbox | Vendor says Meta does not allow access to Threads mentions, audio or polls; listening needs Enterprise |
Links deserve a test, not an assumption. In the Buffer dataset link posts had the lowest median engagement. Meta’s documentation says the first link in a text-only post becomes the attachment by default, and the API reports clicks per URL. Meta has also begun capping link posts on Facebook and Instagram for some subscription tiers, covered in our note on the Meta link cap. The published caps we found cover Facebook and Instagram only, and we could not confirm any Threads cap.
How do ads on Threads work, and who can buy them?
Threads ads are bought through Meta Ads Manager as a placement next to Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp inventory. Meta announced on January 21, 2026 that ads were expanding to all Threads users worldwide, with a gradual rollout expected to take months and ad load described as low at first.
TechCrunch’s report lists image and video ads, with 4:5 and carousel ads as newer additions. Ads can run through Advantage+ or manual campaigns, and brand safety verification from Meta Business Partners now extends to the Threads feed. Threads had opened to global advertisers in April 2025, so the January news widened who sees ads and did not create a new advertiser program.
| Date | Change | Source |
|---|---|---|
| August 15, 2025 | Video ads launched | Meta Threads API changelog |
| October 6, 2025 | Image carousel ads | Meta Threads API changelog |
| October 28, 2025 | Advantage+ catalog ads, images and image carousels only | Meta Threads API changelog |
| January 21, 2026 | Ads expanded to all users globally, gradual rollout | Meta, per TechCrunch |
| February 17, 2026 | App ads for Threads ads | Meta Threads API changelog |
| March 25, 2026 | View, hide and respond to replies on Threads ads | Meta Threads API changelog |
| April 21, 2026 | Page-backed accounts; existing posts can be promoted as ads | Meta Threads API changelog |
A caution on the last row: Meta’s developer guide says existing organic Threads posts cannot be promoted. It describes promoting existing Facebook or Instagram posts as Threads ads, and says engagement on the Threads ad does not carry back to the source post. Account requirements are in flux. One third-party review dated September 2026 reports that Meta dropped the matching-Instagram-profile requirement; we could not confirm that in Meta’s documentation, so check your account. We found no published Threads CPM benchmark, and auction pricing depends on bid, competition and objective.

How do you measure Threads and manage the community?
Threads Insights reports views, likes, replies, reposts, quotes, followers and audience demographics, and the API adds URL clicks. For moderation, Meta provides reply controls, reply approvals and hidden replies. Track outcomes and response time together.
Meta’s documentation lists user-level metrics of views, likes, replies, reposts, quotes, clicks per URL, follower count and follower demographics. Demographics require at least 100 followers and allow one breakdown at a time: country, city, age or gender. Choose a short list tied to decisions: views for reach, replies and quotes for conversation, clicks for traffic, followers for growth. Use UTM tags so Threads visits appear as their own source, as described in our guide to the social media metrics that matter.
For replies, the API documents five reply control options: everyone, accounts you follow, mentioned only, parent post author only, and followers only. It also supports hiding replies and an approval mode where replies stay hidden until approved. Set a written policy first: who replies, within what window, and which topics escalate to sales or legal.
How does Threads compare with X for B2B marketing?
Meta says Threads now has a larger monthly audience than X, while outside estimates show X still ahead in the United States. For most B2B brands the sensible move is to test Threads while keeping any existing X presence, then decide later whether to shift effort.
The evidence is thinner than the headlines. Zuckerberg’s remarks gave no matching X figure, and Similarweb’s April 2026 estimates put Threads ahead globally and X ahead in the US. Buffer’s 2025 medians were about 3.6% for Threads and about 2.5% for X in its tier summary, although another section of the same report gives about 2.8% for X. Buffer noted the gap narrowed as X rose about 44% year over year and Threads fell about 18%. Sendible, a tool vendor, argues Threads suits community building, awareness and recruiting while X suits live events and breaking news. That is vendor opinion.
| Question | Threads | X |
|---|---|---|
| Audience size claim | Meta: 500 million monthly actives (June 16, 2026) | No matching figure in sources we reviewed; Sendible cites third-party estimates of 388 to 557 million |
| 2025 median engagement (Buffer) | About 3.6%, down about 18% year over year | About 2.5% to 2.8%, up about 44% year over year |
| US daily actives, April 2026 (Similarweb) | 18.3 million | 21.3 million |
| Best fit per Sendible (vendor opinion) | Community building, awareness, recruiting | Live events, breaking news, trending topics |
| Post length | 500 characters | Sendible lists 280 characters, longer for paid subscribers |
If your team can run only one text-led channel, pick the one where your buyers and competitors already post, and check by searching for ten named accounts on each. If you have capacity for two, run Threads as the 90-day experiment. TikTok teams should also note that Meta has banned TikTok ads on its own platforms, covered in our notes on the Meta TikTok ads ban.
What does a 30/60/90 day Threads test plan look like?
Use the first 30 days to set up and baseline, the next 30 to test formats and links, and the final 30 to test paid reach and decide. Fix the cadence, change one variable at a time, and write the decision rule before you see results.
Days 1 to 30: set up and baseline
- Claim the profile, link Instagram if you have an account, and write a bio that names audience and topic. Decide on fediverse sharing and record it.
- Choose two or three topic tags and tie each to a content pillar.
- Post on a schedule your team can sustain, for example four to five times a week, mixing short text, an image post and a weekly video or carousel.
- Reply to every comment within a set window, and capture weekly baselines for views, replies, reposts, quotes, followers and URL clicks.
Days 31 to 60: test formats, links and tags
- Change one variable at a time: format first, then link handling, then tag.
- Run the link test, comparing a link attachment, a text-only post and a link in a reply, measuring clicks and views.
- Contribute to two or three communities that match your tags and log inbound conversations.
- Connect a scheduling tool and confirm your formats publish as expected. Review which replies came from target buyers, not only high counts.
Days 61 to 90: test paid reach and decide
- Add Threads as a placement in an existing Meta campaign with a small fixed budget, using creative that worked organically, after your compliance checks.
- Compare cost per landing page visit or qualified action against the same creative on Instagram and Facebook placements.
- Apply your written rule, for example “scale if reply quality and cost per visit meet thresholds, hold if only one does, stop if neither does,” and report staff hours alongside outcomes.
Keep the records. Platform facts change monthly, and a documented test lets you answer a manager with your own numbers. The Social Media Marketing Hub has related guides to compare results with your other Meta channels.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many people use Threads?
Meta announced on June 16, 2026 that Threads reached 500 million monthly active users. On its October 21, 2026 earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg said Threads has overtaken X in monthly actives, without a number. Daily figures are mostly third-party estimates.
Can I run ads on Threads?
Yes. Meta announced on January 21, 2026 that Threads ads were expanding to all users globally, with a gradual rollout. Ads are bought in Meta Ads Manager through Advantage+ or manual placements, in image, video and carousel formats. Check your account for current eligibility.
Can I schedule Threads posts with a tool?
Yes. Buffer, Later and Hootsuite each state they support Threads scheduling, and Threads added native scheduling in January 2025. Features differ by tool, for example carousel size, thread chains and analytics depth, so test your formats before committing.
Do links hurt reach on Threads?
Buffer’s 2025 data showed link posts had the lowest median engagement of the formats it measured, at about 2.34%. That does not prove links suppress distribution, because engagement differs from clicks. Test link formats against your own click and visit goals. The API allows up to five unique links per post.
