TL;DR: Buffer fits creators who want a real Free plan (3 channels, 10 queued posts each) then Essentials at $5/channel/mo annual. Later fits visual planners who will buy a published Starter/Growth ladder. Hootsuite fits teams that bill per user (Standard about $99/user/mo annual) and need a shared inbox / approval stack. Metricool fits analysts who want scheduling plus reporting on metricool.com/pricing.

Social scheduling software queues posts and reports what happened. It is not a full creative suite and not a community platform.

Every entry uses the same fields: published pricing, unit (channel vs user), free/trial, networks and the main limitation. The order below is not a quality ranking. Buffer Free first. Per-channel then per-user tools follow.

Social media scheduling software compared at a glance

Provider Published pricing Unit Best for Link
Buffer Free: 3 channels, 10 posts/channel. Essentials $5/channel/mo annual ($6 monthly). Team $10/channel/mo annual ($12 monthly) Per channel. Team seats unlimited on Team Small teams that add channels, not users Visit β†’
Later Starter / Growth / Scale on later.com/pricing. 2026 reads have shown Starter around $18.75/mo annual (confirm live; Later has cut and moved Starter) Users + β€œsocial sets” + monthly posts Visual calendars, especially Instagram-first Visit β†’
Hootsuite Standard ~$99/user/mo annual (~$149 monthly). Advanced ~$249 annual / ~$399 monthly. Enterprise quote. 30-day trial, no lasting free plan Per user Larger social teams and approvals Visit β†’
Metricool Free plus paid on metricool.com/pricing Plan-gated brands/channels Scheduling plus analytics in one login Visit β†’

Buffer channel prices were read from Buffer’s own 2026 comparison notes aligned to buffer.com/pricing on 16 September 2026. Hootsuite user prices similarly. Later’s Starter dollar amount has moved in 2026 β€” use the live toggle.

Buffer sells channels. Hootsuite sells users. Those two invoices are not comparable without a worksheet.

Channel math versus seat math

Three networks and one person: Buffer Essentials is 3 Γ— $5 = $15 annual. Hootsuite Standard is ~$99 for that one user. Two extra teammates on Buffer Team do not multiply the bill; on Hootsuite they do.

The four providers in detail

1. Buffer

PER CHANNEL, FREE ROW FIRST

Best for: creators and small teams that want a permanent Free plan and a predictable dollars-per-network bill.

Published pricing Free $0. Essentials $5/channel/mo annual. Team $10/channel/mo annual. Fair-use cap called out around 5,000 posts/channel on paid
Unit Connected channel. Team plan: unlimited members
Networks Major networks on the live connector list (including newer ones Buffer lists on pricing)
Free plan / trial Permanent Free. 14-day trial on paid
Main limitation Every extra profile is another $5–$12. Ten profiles is not β€œ$5 Buffer”
  • Stay Free until 10 queued posts per channel is the blocker.
  • Buy Team when several people need the queue, not when you add Instagram.
  • Analytics depth is not Hootsuite Advanced. Price that gap separately.

2. Later

VISUAL CALENDAR

Best for: teams that plan Instagram/TikTok visually and will live inside Later’s calendar rather than Buffer’s queue.

Published pricing later.com/pricing β€” Starter, Growth, Scale. Annual vs monthly changes the number. Extra users and social sets are add-ons on some rows
Unit Users + social sets + posts/month
Networks Visual networks first. Confirm LinkedIn/X on your plan
Free plan / trial Trial. Not Buffer’s lasting Free
Main limitation Post caps per profile on Starter. Growth exists because Starter runs out
  • Count posts per profile per month before you buy Starter.
  • Link-in-bio extras, if sold, are not the scheduler.
  • Do not assume Later undercuts Buffer Essentials on a 3-channel solo stack.

3. Hootsuite

PER USER, TEAM STACK

Best for: social teams that need approvals, a shared inbox and one user-priced platform.

Published pricing Standard ~$99/user/mo annual. Advanced ~$249/user/mo annual. Enterprise quote. 30-day trial
Unit Users. Account limits depend on plan (Standard historically caps social accounts; Advanced lifts that)
Networks Broad. Listening/advocacy live higher
Free plan / trial No lasting free plan
Main limitation Two users Γ— Standard is already a different sport from Buffer Team
  • Count people who must log in, not pages.
  • Advanced is where account limits and analytics customisation show up β€” read the current grid.
  • Do not buy Hootsuite to schedule three personal profiles.

4. Metricool

SCHEDULE PLUS REPORT

Best for: operators who want publishing and competitor/analytics views without a Hootsuite-sized seat bill.

Published pricing metricool.com/pricing β€” Free plus paid brand/channel tiers
Unit Brands / connections as printed today
Networks Confirm the connector you need before you leave Buffer
Free plan / trial Free row exists
Main limitation Reporting is the reason to switch. If you only queue posts, Buffer Free may suffice
  • Use Metricool when the brief includes β€œreport the grid,” not only β€œqueue Reels.”
  • Map brands, not employees, to the paid tier.
  • Agency multi-brand math is the upgrade trigger.

Kurums Match: which one fits your situation

Three profiles and a short queue

Buffer Free.

More profiles, still a small team

Buffer Essentials or Team. Multiply channels.

Instagram calendar is the product

Later, sized to posts/month.

Approvals and many logins

Hootsuite Standard, knowing it is per user.

Buying tip: write channels Γ— people. If people grow faster than channels, Hootsuite hurts. If channels grow faster, Buffer’s meter shows up.

How this comparison was put together

Vendor pricing pages and Buffer’s public Hootsuite comparison figures, 16 September 2026. Later Starter dollars flagged as β€œconfirm live.” No paid placement. Kurums did not run a multi-network calendar on all four.

Order is printed $0 first. No badge reflects a commercial relationship.
