⚡ TL;DR
Walmart’s Vizio is adding more than 40 creator-led channels to its free streaming service while Walmart Connect pushes into live TV buying. At the same time, Smirnoff and Hinge executives told Advertising Week that Gen Z rewards humor, authenticity and craft. For marketers, connected TV is becoming a creator-and-commerce channel, and the winning creative will look less like a TV spot and more like culture.

Two marketing stories published within a day of each other this week describe the same shift from different ends. At one end is infrastructure: Walmart-owned Vizio announced a slate of creator-led programming and new advertiser partnerships designed to win a bigger share of connected TV budgets. At the other end is creative: executives from Smirnoff and Hinge explained at Advertising Week New York how they reach a generation that is famously hard to impress.

Put them together and you get a useful picture of where marketing budgets and creative energy are heading in late 2026. This article summarizes both stories, using reporting from Marketing Dive between October 9 and 12, 2026, and draws out what marketers can do with them. Figures are as reported by the companies and publication; we have not independently verified them.

Vizio makes a creator-first pitch for CTV dollars

Vizio, which Walmart acquired in 2024 for $2.3 billion, is positioning itself as a central piece of Walmart’s plan to offer advertisers a full-funnel approach, from discovery on screen to purchase at the retailer. The latest announcement focuses on content, and specifically creators.

The key facts, as reported:

  • Scale. Vizio OS reached 32 million yearly active devices in the first half of 2026, up 20% from a year earlier. Viewing hours on the free ad-supported streaming (FAST) service WatchFree+ rose 58% year over year in the second quarter of the company’s fiscal 2027.
  • Creator channels. More than 40 new creator-led channels are coming to WatchFree+, spanning gaming, comedy, food, lifestyle, sports and travel. Named creators include MrBeast, Ryan Trahan, Nick DiGiovanni, Sam and Colby, Uncle Roger and others, along with a partnership with First We Feast’s “Hot Ones.”
  • Original programming. A creator-led series, “Holiday Chocolate Workshop,” will feature chocolatier Guichon and be exclusive to WatchFree+, with brand opportunities across streaming and social. A WatchFree+ exclusive film, “Jingle Bells Wedding Bells,” will have Geico as presenting sponsor.
  • Premium library. Expanded partnerships with MGM, NBCUniversal, Disney, A&E and A24 will bring titles such as “The Good Doctor” and “Law & Order.” WatchFree+ offers more than 45,000 movies and shows and over 400 live and local channels.

Context from the Interactive Advertising Bureau: U.S. CTV ad spend is expected to grow 11% in 2026 to $29.3 billion. In a market growing that fast, platforms compete on differentiated audiences and formats, and creators are one of the few assets that are hard to replicate.

Why Geico’s sponsorship is the interesting detail

Geico’s CMO, Arianna Orpello, said in the release: “Where people spend their time watching entertainment matters, and we want GEICO to be part of those moments.” The notable thing is the format. A presenting sponsorship of a holiday film is closer to old-school branded entertainment than to a 15-second pre-roll. As creator channels and original content expand, expect more advertisers to buy context and association instead of just impressions.

Walmart Connect reaches into live TV

The same Marketing Dive report notes that Walmart Connect, the retailer’s U.S. advertising arm, announced new ways to reach its audience. A partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery offers advertisers private marketplace deals available in Walmart’s demand-side platform. According to the report, this brings Walmart’s audiences to live television advertising for the first time.

Other details from the announcement:

  • A similar partnership with Spotify is in place.
  • An existing relationship with Yahoo DSP will offer Vizio inventory through Magnite, moving that initiative from proof of concept to alpha testing.
  • Walmart Connect revenue, excluding Vizio, grew 43% year over year in the second quarter of its fiscal 2027.

The strategic read is straightforward. Retail media networks started as sponsored listings on retailer sites. They are now assembling a cross-channel stack with first-party purchase data on one side and TV, audio and creator inventory on the other. Advertisers get closed-loop measurement; Walmart gets a bigger share of upper-funnel budgets that used to flow elsewhere.

💡 Pro Tip: If you buy retail media, ask for a test design that isolates incremental sales lift on CTV exposure versus on-site search. Closed-loop reporting is only valuable if the control group is defined before the campaign starts.

Gen Z at Advertising Week: be funny, be real, and sweat the details

The creative side of the story comes from a panel at Advertising Week New York. Marketing Dive reported that Gen Z’s global purchasing power is expected to reach $12 trillion by 2030, which explains the persistent urgency around the cohort. Panelists from Smirnoff (a Diageo brand), Hinge and the creative agency Dazed Studio described what has worked.

Smirnoff’s “Go Off”

Smirnoff’s long-running “Go Off” campaign with musician Troye Sivan taps into dry, Gen Z-style humor. Sivan was appointed “chief vibes officer” and took part in the creative process, according to Jose Nicolas Velez, Smirnoff’s global marketing director. The materials included scripted comic spots and also a raw asset: an out-of-office message Sivan recorded on his phone, which fans could download and use. The campaign performed well on social media with a demographic that is less likely to drink than older cohorts. “Make sure that it’s from Gen Z to Gen Z,” Velez said, adding that brands should take calculated risks.

Hinge’s “No Ordinary Love”

Hinge leaned into the popularity of romance fiction and BookTok, producing an audiobook as the latest iteration of “No Ordinary Love,” launched on Substack. Ola Sobiecki, Hinge’s executive creative director, said much of the brand’s work is about “getting people offline” and into real dates. Rachel Effendy of Dazed Studio pushed back on the idea that Gen Z only wants lo-fi content: some Gen Zers appreciate craft, she said, down to conversations about whether to move text “two millimeters to the right.”

The takeaway is that authenticity and polish are not opposites. What matters is whether the work reflects the audience’s own references and humor.

How the two stories connect

The infrastructure story and the creative story are really one story. Vizio is building a place where creator content and ads sit side by side on the biggest screen in the home. Smirnoff and Hinge have shown what content works for the viewers who will be watching. For marketers the practical question is how to turn this into a plan.

Signal Implication Action
40+ creator channels on WatchFree+ CTV inventory is becoming creator inventory Brief creators for the big screen, not just vertical video
CTV spend up 11% to $29.3B (IAB) Competition for premium placements rises Lock in holiday deals early; test sponsorship formats
Walmart Connect expanding into live TV and audio Retail data is moving upfunnel Demand lift studies tied to purchases
Gen Z wants humor, authenticity, craft Generic spots underperform Give talent real creative input; ship raw and polished assets

A five-step playbook

  1. Treat creators as a media channel and a creative partner. Smirnoff’s “chief vibes officer” model shows the value of involving talent in the work, not just renting reach.
  2. Plan for the living-room screen. Creator content built for phones may need re-cutting, longer formats and clearer sponsorship integration for CTV.
  3. Use sponsorships where context matters. Geico’s presenting role in a holiday film is a template for seasonal categories.
  4. Insist on measurable outcomes. With retail media growing fast, ask partners for incrementality, not just reach reports.
  5. Balance authenticity and craft. Mix organic, phone-shot assets with highly produced pieces, as the Smirnoff and Hinge teams did.

Risks and open questions

None of this is a guaranteed win. Company-reported growth figures are not independent audits, and a 58% jump in viewing hours on a free service starts from a base that the reporting does not disclose. Creator partnerships carry brand-safety and authenticity risk, and a sponsorship in a niche channel may deliver fewer impressions than a conventional buy. The Walmart Connect integrations with Magnite and Yahoo DSP are described as moving to alpha testing, which means advertisers should not yet assume they are production-ready. Finally, Gen Z advice from conference panels reflects the brands that won, not every brand that tried. Treat it as a hypothesis to test in your category.

Bottom line

The biggest screen in the house is being rebuilt around creators, and retail data is the connective tissue that lets advertisers prove it works. The brands that benefit will be those that take the cultural lesson of Smirnoff and Hinge seriously: make something the audience would have wanted to watch anyway, and then use measurement to show it paid off.
