The CFO of a Pune auto-components group is signing off the FY27 headcount plan. The battery line needs power-electronics engineers, finance wants an AI engineer, and both carry premiums far above the 9% increment she budgeted.
Across town, a support engineer at an IT services firm has watched her project shrink for two years and is weighing a cybersecurity certificate, a move into a global capability centre, or the nursing-to-Germany route a cousin took. This guide is for both.
India enters 2026 with low headline unemployment and a two-speed job market. According to the Ministry of Statistics’ PLFS monthly bulletin for July 2026, unemployment among people aged 15 and over was 5.1% (urban 6.7%). Yet white-collar hiring on Naukri grew only 2% year on year in September 2026 while AI and machine-learning roles grew 20%. Behind those numbers sit the 500 GW non-fossil power target, about ₹1.6 lakh crore ($18 billion) of semiconductor investment and a global capability centre (GCC) industry that reached $98.4 billion of revenue in FY26.
This guide, part of the Rising Professions 2026 hub, ranks India’s rising professions, explains the forces behind them, sets out pay in rupees and dollars, and closes with an employer playbook.
Which jobs are rising fastest in India in 2026?
LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise 2026 India list is led by prompt engineers, AI engineers, software engineers and AI managers; Naukri shows AI/ML hiring up 20% in September 2026.
What do they pay?
foundit’s 2026 data puts entry-level AI roles at ₹8.87–15.41 lakh ($10,000–17,300) and 15-plus-year AI professionals at ₹70.99–89.24 lakh ($79,800–100,300); Michael Page reports switch rises of up to 30% in AI, chip and EV roles.
Where are the jobs?
Bengaluru is a top-three location for eight of LinkedIn’s ten leading roles; Hyderabad led metro hiring growth in September 2026; Gujarat anchors the chip build-out.
Which jobs are rising fastest in India in 2026?
AI engineers, prompt engineers, software engineers and AI managers top LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise 2026 India list, followed by cybersecurity, solar, chip-design, quality and care roles. Naukri and TeamLease data confirm it: AI/ML, auto, healthcare and GCC hiring grow while IT services stall.
LinkedIn’s 2026 India edition, published in January, ranks 25 titles; we combine its ranks (via HRKatha and trade press) with Naukri hiring growth, TeamLease’s survey and investment data. Pay figures are typical surveyed ranges at about ₹89 to the dollar.

| 12 | Sales specialist / BD director | Export sales, GCC expansion, quick commerce. | LinkedIn India #7 and #15; 64% of employers expanding sales (TeamLease) | Not benchmarked |
Two things unite the list. The roles are concentrated but spreading: Bengaluru is a top-three location for eight of LinkedIn’s ten leading roles, yet solar consultants cluster in Nagpur and Lucknow. And they skew male: LinkedIn counts women at 22% of AI engineers and 8% of solar consultants, so the under-tapped half of the talent pool is largest where shortages bite.
What is driving demand for these professions?
Six forces explain India’s 2026 list: the AI and GCC boom, PLI-backed semiconductors, the 500 GW energy transition, electric vehicles, a hospital capacity race with global nursing demand, and quick-commerce growth.
AI and the global capability centre boom
India hosts 2,117 GCCs employing 2.36 million professionals, according to the Zinnov–Nasscom FY26 report as covered by Business Today, with revenue of about $98.4 billion, a level not expected before 2030.
LinkedIn’s April 2026 analysis put growth in Indian AI-engineering postings at 59.5% year on year, ahead of the United States and Europe; Deloitte expects AI talent demand to exceed 1.25 million by 2027.
Semiconductors and PLI-backed manufacturing
Tata Electronics’ ₹91,000 crore ($11 billion) fab at Dholera, Gujarat, with Taiwan’s PSMC as partner, is planned for around 20,000 direct and indirect jobs, with the first chip expected in December 2026.
The Chips to Startup programme aims to train 85,000 VLSI engineers by FY27, and PLI schemes across 14 sectors had generated more than 12 lakh jobs by March 2025, the commerce ministry told Parliament.
The 500 GW energy transition
A CEEW–NRDC study released in June 2026 estimates that the 500 GW non-fossil target could support about 4.4 million full-time-equivalent clean-energy jobs by 2030, 43% of them in rooftop solar, which generates about 45 job-years per megawatt against one for ground-mounted solar.
That labour intensity explains why solar consultants (#10) cluster in Nagpur and Lucknow.
Electric vehicles and batteries
Adecco India’s August 2026 analysis projects that the EV ecosystem could support 30–40 million jobs by 2030, mostly indirect, with hiring growing 15–20% a year.
TeamLease gives automotive a 10.1% net employment change and EV infrastructure 9.7%, both above the 5.4% national figure; Michael Page groups EV and battery roles with AI and chips as fields where switchers command up to 30% rises.
Hospital capacity and the nursing export engine
India has about 2.45 nurses and midwives per 1,000 people against the WHO benchmark of three, according to data tabled in the Rajya Sabha in 2026, and ICRA expects 18 hospital chains to add more than 34,000 beds by FY30.
Demand is also external: Business Standard reports about 16,600 Indian nurses in German care facilities as of June 2025, with Germany paying about €4,000 a month gross.
Consumption, gig work and quick commerce
India’s gig workforce stands at about 7.7 million and is projected to reach 23.5 million by 2030, figures NITI Aayog’s former chief executive cited in January 2026.
TeamLease gives e-commerce and tech start-ups the highest net employment change of any sector at 12.6%; media buyers (#6) and sales specialists ride the same wave.
What do the rising jobs pay in India?
AI, cybersecurity and semiconductor roles command premiums of 25–35% over mainstream IT, with senior AI professionals reaching ₹70–90 lakh, while IT-services pay has slipped. Market-wide rises run near 9%, but switchers in AI, chips and EVs can secure up to 30%.
Figures are annual cost-to-company in lakh (100,000 rupees) at about ₹89 to the dollar.
| Role | Typical range (INR, approx. USD) | Source / year |
|---|---|---|
| AI engineer | Entry ₹8.87–15.41 lakh ($10,000–$17,300); 15+ yrs ₹70.99–89.24 lakh ($79,800–$100,300) | foundit, 2026 |
| Generative-AI engineer | Entry about ₹12 lakh ($13,500); 8+ yrs about ₹60 lakh ($67,400) | 1 Finance, 2026 |

| Energy & utilities | Mid up to ₹18.38 lakh ($20,700); senior about ₹24 lakh ($27,000) | Randstad, 2025–26 |
| Semiconductor engineer | 25–35% above mainstream IT; up to ₹80 lakh ($89,900) | Taggd, 2025 |
| Legacy IT services | Entry ₹2.68–5.08 lakh ($3,000–$5,700); 15+ yrs ₹57.55–72.13 lakh ($64,700–$81,000) | foundit, 2026 |
Pay versus inflation. Michael Page puts the average rise for job-switchers at 9.1%, with GCCs leading increments at 10.4%; foundit calculates that AI salaries compounded 23% between 2024 and 2026 while IT-services pay fell 1%.
Transparency and geography. India has no pay-transparency mandate, so benchmarking relies on surveys. Randstad finds Mumbai pays the highest senior salaries (₹40.04 lakh); tier-2 cities average ₹28.38 lakh at senior level against ₹32.40 lakh in tier-1 metros.
Which skills, degrees and certifications unlock these roles?

Which professions are losing ground?
Entry-level IT-services coding, testing and support roles are shrinking as AI agents absorb routine work: TCS cut headcount by about 23,400 in FY26 and Naukri shows IT/software hiring down 4%, with education and hospitality softer.
TCS’s headcount fell from 607,979 to 584,519 in the year to March 2026, and TeamLease Digital counted close to 40,000 tech layoffs in about a year. NITI Aayog warned in October 2025 that automation could displace up to 2 million tech-services jobs by 2031, while skilling could add about 4 million.
Outside technology, Naukri’s September 2026 index shows education hiring down 18% and hospitality down 11%. The balanced reading is that firms shedding generalist coders are hiring AI specialists: AI roles within IT services grew 11% even as the sector fell 4%.
How should employers in India hire for scarce rising roles?
Benchmark pay against 2026 surveys, hire on demonstrated skills, build internal AI academies, use apprenticeship and skilling schemes, and plan for tier-2 locations and contract-to-hire. Without an Indian entity, an employer of record gets you started.
Benchmark realistically. Michael Page shows switchers in AI, chip and EV roles commanding up to 30% against a 9.1% average; pay the premium where it matters. Our guide to recruiting in India covers sourcing, notice periods and offer-to-join conversion.
Hire for skills, not labels. LinkedIn reports that 72% of Indian professionals intend to change jobs in 2026 yet 84% feel unprepared. Skills-based job descriptions widen the funnel; for niche searches, see our review of recruitment agencies and HR consultancies in India.
Build and borrow talent. Internal mobility is the cheapest supply for AI and data roles given the surplus of experienced IT-services engineers; the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme creates subsidised technician pipelines.
Mobility, entities and brand. India exports talent, so immigration planning is mostly about retention; foreign specialists need an Indian Employment Visa, reserved for skilled roles that cannot be filled locally. Firms without an entity can hire through an employer of record. Our guide to employee benefits in Asia-Pacific covers provident fund and gratuity, and our salary comparison sets India against its peers.
What should job seekers and career changers do in 2026?
Pick a rising role adjacent to your current skills, add one recognised credential and a visible project, target the cities where demand is growing, and negotiate on 2026 benchmarks.
- Map your adjacency. A support engineer is two skills from a cloud role; a QA tester is close to security testing; a ward nurse is a German B1 certificate from a €4,000-a-month post.
- Choose one credential with market pull. AI-102 or the AWS ML Specialty for AI, Security+ then CISSP for cyber, Chips to Startup for semiconductors, Suryamitra for solar.
- Build proof, not just paper. A deployed model outranks a fourth online course.
- Follow the geography. Hyderabad GCC hiring grew 23% in September 2026.
- Keep the AI tools honest. 54% of Indian professionals fear AI hides them from recruiters, LinkedIn finds; make sure a human sees your real work.
- Exit declining work early. If you are in entry-level IT-services coding, start the move while employed; the skills behind 2026’s rising jobs explains which capabilities transfer.
