Buyer's guide Β· Corporate Governance
We compared six SOX compliance platforms on published pricing, trials, SOX scope, control testing and automation, auditor collaboration and the main limitation for each buyer type.
- Pre-IPO tech company starting with ITGC: Secureframe β It added SOX ITGC support in June 2024 and its Fundamentals plan is published at a starting price of $7,500 per year.
- Company already using Vanta for SOC 2: Vanta β Its SOX ITGC product checks controls hourly and lets you manage financial controls in custom frameworks alongside ITGC.
- Audit team wanting full-population analytics: Diligent Internal Controls β Diligent says its SOX tooling analyzes entire data populations rather than samples, and pairs with ACL Analytics.
- Issuer linking SOX to SEC reporting: Workiva β Workiva connects SOX controls, AI-assisted testing and remediation to the same platform used for SEC and annual reporting.
- Large public company with mature SOX program: Optro (formerly AuditBoard) β Optro, renamed from AuditBoard on 9 March 2026, offers an out-of-the-box SOX RCM and AI agents for attribute testing.
SOX compliance software helps companies meet Sarbanes-Oxley Act requirements, mainly Section 404, which requires management to assess internal control over financial reporting and, for many issuers, an external auditor to attest to it. The software centralizes the risk and control matrix (RCM), process narratives and flowcharts, control testing and evidence, deficiency tracking and remediation, and management certification. It also gives external auditors structured access to evidence. Buyers include SOX program managers, internal audit leaders, controllers and CFOs at public companies and at private companies preparing for an IPO or required to follow SOX-like controls by lenders or acquirers. Tools range from security compliance platforms that automate IT general controls (ITGC) to full GRC and audit platforms that run the entire SOX program.
We compared each platform on six fields: published pricing, free plan or trial, SOX scope, control testing and automation, auditor collaboration and integrations, and the main limitation. Products appear in buyer order, from ITGC-focused automation tools that pre-IPO companies adopt first to enterprise SOX and audit platforms for large public companies. The order is not a quality ranking. Prices and capabilities were checked on official vendor pages on 12 October 2026. Only one vendor publishes a starting price; the rest are listed as quote-based.

Pricing checked 12 October 2026 on each vendor's official pricing or product pages. Prices are list prices in USD unless stated; "Quote-based" means the vendor does not publish a price. Order follows buyer fit and pricing transparency, not a quality score. Confirm billing basis, minimums and taxes with the vendor before you buy. Methodology is described below.
The 6 options in detail
Secureframe
Best for pre-IPO companies starting with ITGCBest for: Venture-backed and pre-IPO technology companies that need SOX ITGC controls, policies and evidence automated alongside SOC 2 or ISO 27001.
| Attribute | Secureframe |
|---|---|
| Published pricing | Fundamentals starting at $7,500 per year; Complete and Defense plans are quote-based |
| Free plan or trial | No free trial mentioned; demo scheduling |
| SOX scope | SOX ITGC: access, change management and IT operations controls for financial systems; not full SOX 404 |
| Control testing and automation | Pre-built and custom controls, continuous monitoring with real-time alerts, AI-assisted risk assessments |
| Auditor collaboration and integrations | 200+ integrations for automated evidence; policy templates built with former auditors |
| Main limitation | Covers IT controls only; business process controls and management assessment need another tool |
- SOX ITGC policies come pre-written by in-house experts and former auditors and can be published to staff for acknowledgment.
- Automated evidence collection reuses the same integrations many startups already set up for SOC 2.
- The pricing page does not say which plan includes SOX ITGC, so confirm framework availability before you budget.
Our take: Secureframe is a security compliance automation platform that added SOX ITGC support in June 2024. It covers the IT general controls auditors test first in a SOX program: user access, change management and IT operations for the systems that feed financial reporting. You get a library of SOX ITGC policies, pre-built controls with remediation guidance, continuous monitoring through more than 200 integrations, and third-party risk tools for vendors that touch financial systems. Secureframe is the only vendor on this page with a published starting price: Fundamentals from $7,500 per year. It fits venture-backed companies 12 to 24 months from an IPO that already run SOC 2 and want ITGC readiness without a full GRC suite. In a demo, confirm which plan includes SOX ITGC and how evidence is shared with auditors. Compared with Workiva, Optro or Diligent, it does not run business process controls, walkthroughs or management's 404 assessment.
Vanta
Best for teams already running SOC 2Best for: Fast-growing companies that already use Vanta for SOC 2 or ISO 27001 and want SOX ITGC evidence and access reviews in the same workspace.
| Attribute | Vanta |
|---|---|
| Published pricing | Quote-based; Vanta's pricing page shows Essentials, Plus, Professional and Enterprise without prices |
| Free plan or trial | No free trial mentioned; demo request |
| SOX scope | SOX ITGC out of the box; financial controls can be tracked in custom frameworks |
| Control testing and automation | Automated tests check controls hourly; access reviews, issue management, Vanta AI for policies and mapping |
| Auditor collaboration and integrations | Read-only auditor access to evidence; audit partner network; data from 400+ tools |
| Main limitation | ITGC-first design; complex business process testing is not its core strength |
- Hourly automated control checks surface access or configuration drift before an auditor finds it.
- Auditors can be given secure read-only access to SOX ITGC evidence inside the platform.
- SOX ITGC is not named on the public plan comparison, so plan placement and add-on cost must be confirmed in a quote.
Our take: Vanta's SOX ITGC product extends its security compliance platform to the IT controls that support financial reporting. Out of the box you get pre-built controls, core policies, mapped automated tests and document requests for access, change management and IT operations, with tests running hourly. Access reviews cover in-scope financial applications, issue management tracks exceptions after an audit, and Vanta AI helps draft policies and map controls. Vanta states that revenue recognition, journal entry and other financial controls are outside ITGC, but you can track them in custom frameworks so the SOX program sits in one place. Pricing is quote-based. It fits companies already using Vanta for SOC 2 that need ITGC readiness before an IPO or a lender's SOX-like requirement. In a demo, test how custom financial controls are documented and how auditors sample evidence. Compared with Secureframe the scope is similar; compared with Workiva or Optro, it is lighter on process controls and walkthroughs.
Diligent Internal Controls
Best for analytics-driven controls testingBest for: Mid-size and large companies whose internal audit teams want SOX controls management paired with data analytics for full-population testing.
| Attribute | Diligent Internal Controls |
|---|---|
| Published pricing | Quote-based; the product page links to a request pricing form |
| Free plan or trial | No free trial; demo request |
| SOX scope | Internal controls aligned to SOX and COSO, with a centralized risk and control library |
| Control testing and automation | Automated testing and evidence workflows; AI maps controls to regulations and flags gaps; full-population analysis |
| Auditor collaboration and integrations | Dashboards and audit-ready reports for executives, boards and regulators; ACL Analytics sold separately |
| Main limitation | Analytics depth depends on adding ACL Analytics; confirm what is in the base licence |
- Diligent states that teams can analyze entire data populations rather than samples when testing controls.
- Board-ready reporting connects to Diligent's wider governance products, which many boards already use.
- Some capabilities, such as ACL Analytics, are separate products, so scope and price can expand quickly.
Our take: Diligent, known for its board portal, sells Internal Controls as part of its Diligent One GRC platform, which absorbed the former Galvanize HighBond and ACL products. The controls module centralizes risks, controls and regulatory requirements, uses AI to map controls to regulations and draft descriptions for gaps, and automates testing, monitoring and evidence collection through workflows. Diligent claims 80 percent time savings across SOX and COSO testing and reporting, which you should treat as a vendor figure. Its distinctive angle is analytics: with ACL Analytics, teams can test full populations, such as all payments for duplicates, instead of samples. Pricing is quote-based. It fits companies with an internal audit function that already uses data analytics or wants to. In a demo, ask what is included without ACL Analytics, how external auditors access evidence and how certifications are run. Compared with Optro and Workiva, Diligent's advantage is analytics and board reporting.
MetricStream SOX Compliance Management
Best for global enterprises with broad GRCBest for: Large and global enterprises, including those with UK SOX-style requirements, that want SOX inside a broad enterprise GRC platform.
| Attribute | MetricStream SOX Compliance Management |
|---|---|
| Published pricing | Quote-based; no prices on the official site, contact sales or request a demo |
| Free plan or trial | No free trial; demo request |
| SOX scope | SOX Compliance Management plus a UK SOX Compliance Management solution and internal audit |
| Control testing and automation | AI to automate audit fieldwork and highlight control gaps; integrated with risk and audit modules |
| Auditor collaboration and integrations | Part of a wider GRC suite covering audit, risk and compliance |
| Main limitation | Enterprise scope and implementation effort; smaller SOX teams may find it heavy |
- A separate UK SOX solution is listed, useful for groups preparing for UK internal controls reforms as well as US SOX.
- SOX, internal audit and enterprise risk share one platform, which helps groups with many entities and frameworks.
- Implementation typically needs partner or vendor services, and the breadth of the suite adds configuration effort.
Our take: MetricStream is an enterprise GRC vendor whose audit and controls offering includes SOX Compliance Management, internal audit management and a dedicated UK SOX solution. It markets AI to automate audit fieldwork and highlight control gaps, and SOX sits next to enterprise risk, regulatory compliance and third-party risk on the same platform. That breadth suits large, multi-entity groups that want one system of record across frameworks and regions, particularly banks, insurers and industrial groups that already run MetricStream for risk. Pricing is quote-based. In a demo, ask for a SOX-only configuration to see how much of the wider platform you must adopt, how the RCM is imported from spreadsheets, and how external auditors access testing evidence. Ask also for a realistic implementation timeline and services estimate. Compared with Optro and Workiva, MetricStream is more of an enterprise GRC backbone; compared with Secureframe and Vanta, it covers the full SOX program rather than IT controls only.
Workiva
Best for linking SOX to SEC reportingBest for: Public companies that already use Workiva for SEC or annual reporting and want SOX controls, testing and remediation on the same connected platform.
| Attribute | Workiva |
|---|---|
| Published pricing | Quote-based; no prices published |
| Free plan or trial | No free trial; on-demand demo in the Workiva Demo Center |
| SOX scope | Full SOX program: control management, risk-based planning, testing, remediation, documentation, COSO 2013 mapping |
| Control testing and automation | AI agents refine attributes, generate test rules, run tests and draft remediation plans for human review |
| Auditor collaboration and integrations | Shared platform with SEC reporting and financial statements; Workiva cites 6,700+ customers |
| Main limitation | Strongest value when you also use Workiva reporting; standalone SOX buyers should compare carefully |
- Flowcharts and narratives update automatically and changes propagate across connected controls and documents.
- AI test conclusions are checked against annotated source evidence, and reviewers can comment on or override results.
- Pricing reflects a broad platform, so companies wanting SOX only may pay for capabilities they do not use.
Our take: Workiva is best known for SEC and annual reporting, and its SOX compliance solution builds on the same connected data platform. Control owners, testers and reviewers work from one control set with role-based permissions, risk-based planning highlights coverage gaps, and controls are mapped to COSO 2013. Testing can be rule-based, AI-driven or both: AI agents help refine attributes, generate testing rules and run tests, and conclusions are checked against annotated source evidence that reviewers can override. A remediation agent suggests root-cause-aligned action plans for human review. Workiva says more than 6,700 companies use its platform. Pricing is quote-based. It fits public companies that already prepare 10-K and 10-Q filings in Workiva and want SOX evidence to sit next to disclosures. In a demo, test AI testing on one of your own controls and ask how auditors access workpapers. Compared with Optro, Workiva's edge is the reporting link; Optro is more audit-centric.
Optro (formerly AuditBoard)
Best for large public company SOX programsBest for: Large and mid-cap public companies with mature SOX and internal audit functions that want AI-assisted testing and broad GRC on one platform.
| Attribute | Optro (formerly AuditBoard) |
|---|---|
| Published pricing | Quote-based; no prices published |
| Free plan or trial | No free trial; demo scheduling |
| SOX scope | Full SOX program with out-of-the-box SOX RCM, risk assessments, planning, testing and reporting |
| Control testing and automation | AI agents run attribute tests on uploaded evidence, AI-generated narratives and flowcharts, continuous monitoring |
| Auditor collaboration and integrations | External auditors and first-line staff complete tasks in the platform; used by over 50% of the Fortune 500 |
| Main limitation | Rebranded in March 2026 and acquired Midship in 2026; check roadmap and contract naming |
- An out-of-the-box SOX risk and control matrix helps newer programs start without building the RCM from scratch.
- Optro states typical implementation timelines of four to eight weeks.
- The 2026 rebrand and acquisitions mean product names and packaging are still settling, so read order forms closely.
Our take: Optro is the new name, from 9 March 2026, of AuditBoard, which itself started as SOXHUB, and private equity firm Hg acquired the company in 2024 for roughly $3 billion. SOX remains its core: an out-of-the-box SOX RCM, workflows for risk assessments, planning, testing and reporting, and AI across the lifecycle. AI agents run attribute tests on uploaded evidence such as user access reviews and reconciliations, AI drafts planning narratives and flowcharts from your notes, and continuous monitoring flags deficiencies sooner. External auditors and first-line control owners can complete tasks directly in the platform. Optro acquired Midship in 2026 to expand autonomous testing. Pricing is quote-based. It fits large and mid-cap public companies, and pre-IPO companies building a full program, that want SOX connected to internal audit, ERM and IT risk. In a demo, test AI attribute testing on your own evidence and ask about auditor licence costs. Compared with Workiva, Optro is more audit-led.
How to choose SOX compliance software
ITGC only or the full SOX program
SOX 404 covers both IT general controls and business process controls such as revenue, procure-to-pay, financial close and journal entries, plus entity-level controls and management's assessment. Security compliance platforms like Secureframe and Vanta automate ITGC evidence well but do not run walkthroughs, process testing or certifications. Full SOX platforms like Workiva, Optro, Diligent and MetricStream cover the whole program. Pre-IPO companies often start with ITGC automation and add a full platform closer to their first 404 year; decide which stage you are in before demos. Your audit committee and external auditor should agree with that staging plan.
Risk and control matrix and documentation
Your RCM, narratives and flowcharts are the backbone of the program. Ask how the tool imports an existing spreadsheet RCM, whether it offers a starter library, and how changes to a control flow through to tests, documents and reports. Workiva describes automatic propagation across connected documents, and Optro offers an out-of-the-box SOX RCM. Check version history, because auditors will ask what changed between quarters and who approved it. A clean import in the pilot predicts how painful year one will be. Ask also whether the tool supports multiple entities and locations with shared controls.
Testing automation and AI
Most vendors now use AI to suggest test attributes, run tests on evidence or draft remediation plans. Ask exactly which steps are automated, how conclusions are traced back to evidence and how a reviewer overrides the AI. Your external auditor must be comfortable relying on the results, so involve them early. Full-population analytics, as Diligent describes with ACL Analytics, can replace sampling for some controls but needs clean data access. Pilot AI testing on two or three of your own controls before trusting vendor time-saving claims.
Auditor collaboration and evidence requests
Much of SOX effort goes into responding to auditor requests. Look for structured request lists, secure auditor access to evidence and clear status tracking so the same document is not sent twice. Check how auditor accounts are licensed and whether there is an extra cost. Ask your audit firm whether it already works with the platform; familiarity can shorten walkthroughs and reduce back-and-forth during interim and year-end testing. Agree a single request owner on your side to avoid duplicate uploads and missed deadlines.
Integrations and total cost
Automated evidence depends on connections to your ERP, identity provider, ticketing and cloud systems. Security compliance tools cite hundreds of integrations for IT evidence, while full SOX platforms focus more on ERP and reporting links. Ask which connectors are included, which need services, and what implementation costs on top of the subscription. Get pricing for auditor seats, additional entities and AI features, and confirm renewal caps. This article is informational and is not accounting, audit or legal advice. Request two references from customers of similar size and ERP.
How SOX compliance software pricing works
Only one vendor on this page publishes a starting price. Secureframe lists its Fundamentals plan from $7,500 per year, with Complete and Defense plans quote-based; its pricing page does not state which plan includes SOX ITGC. Vanta shows four plans, Essentials, Plus, Professional and Enterprise, without prices and offers personalized quotes. Both price around the number of frameworks, employees and features such as access reviews or questionnaire automation, so adding SOX ITGC to an existing SOC 2 subscription may change the plan you need. Ask whether the price is fixed for the term or tied to headcount.
Full SOX platforms are quote-based. Diligent, MetricStream, Workiva and Optro direct buyers to demos or pricing requests. Pricing usually depends on the modules you license, such as SOX, internal audit, risk and analytics, the number of users including auditor and control-owner seats, the number of entities in scope and the level of implementation services. AI testing features may be priced as add-ons. Multi-year contracts are common and can include bundled services hours. Ask vendors to price a SOX-only scope first, then the broader suite, so you can see what you would be paying for platform breadth.
Implementation is a meaningful cost. Optro cites typical timelines of four to eight weeks, but complex multi-entity programs take longer and often involve consulting partners. Budget for RCM clean-up, integration work and training. Treat all figures here as informational and not financial, accounting or legal advice. Year two is usually cheaper in effort, once the RCM and integrations are stable.

Ask your external audit firm which SOX platforms its teams already work with before shortlisting. Choosing a tool your auditors know can shorten evidence requests and walkthroughs, and their view on AI-tested controls will shape how much automation you can actually rely on.
SOX Compliance Software: frequently asked questions
What is SOX compliance software?
It is software that helps companies meet Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, mainly Section 404 on internal control over financial reporting. It stores the risk and control matrix, narratives and flowcharts, schedules and records control tests, manages deficiencies and remediation, supports management certification and gives auditors structured access to evidence. Some tools cover only IT general controls; others run the full program.
What is the difference between SOX ITGC tools and full SOX platforms?
ITGC tools such as Secureframe and Vanta automate evidence for IT general controls like access, change management and operations. Full SOX platforms such as Workiva, Optro, Diligent and MetricStream also handle business process controls, walkthroughs, testing workpapers, deficiency evaluation and management's assessment. Many pre-IPO companies start with ITGC tools and move to a full platform later.
How much does SOX compliance software cost?
As checked on 12 October 2026, Secureframe publishes a Fundamentals plan from $7,500 per year, though the page does not say which plan includes SOX ITGC. Vanta, Diligent, MetricStream, Workiva and Optro are quote-based. Costs depend on modules, users, entities, AI features and implementation services, so ask for a SOX-only quote and a full-suite quote to compare.
Do private companies need SOX compliance software?
Private companies are generally not subject to SOX 404, but many adopt SOX-like controls when preparing for an IPO, when lenders or investors require them, or ahead of an acquisition by a public company. ITGC-focused tools are a common starting point. This article is informational and is not legal or accounting advice; confirm your obligations with counsel and your auditors.
Can AI replace SOX control testing?
AI can speed up parts of testing, such as suggesting attributes, checking evidence against criteria and drafting narratives or remediation plans. Workiva and Optro both describe AI agents with human review. However, management and external auditors remain responsible for conclusions, so outputs must be traceable to evidence and reviewable. Discuss reliance on AI-tested controls with your auditor before scaling it.
How long does it take to implement SOX software?
It depends on scope. Optro cites typical implementation timelines of four to eight weeks. ITGC automation tools can connect integrations quickly, but policy and control design still take time. Multi-entity programs with many business process controls, ERP integrations and data migration from spreadsheets can take several months, especially if implementation runs during a busy reporting period.
