TL;DR: Stripe Tax fits sellers already on Stripe who can price tax as 0.5% or a $90 subscription. TaxJar fits US order-tier pricing from $39 a month. Anrok fits a published $100 per market when filing is in the same fee. Avalara is the quote-led option when a list price is not public.

Sales tax software calculates sales tax, VAT, or GST at checkout, watches nexus thresholds, and sometimes files returns. It is not accounting software and it is not a payment processor. This page covers products a seller can price for tax on digital or physical sales.

Every provider is described with the same fields: published price, trial or free status, what the fee includes, a filing note, and the main tradeoff. The order is not a quality ranking. Providers are sorted by the public entry price we could verify: a $0 plan or the lowest published list price first, and quote-led plans last.

Compared at a glance

Provider Published pricing How the fee is built Best for Visit
Stripe Tax No-code pay as you go is 0.5% of volume where you are registered; API is $0.50 per transaction call and $0.05 per calculation call; subscription tiers from $90/month $90 tier includes 200 transactions; $430 tier includes 1,000 Checkout or Billing sellers who want tax in the same account Visit →
TaxJar Starter from $39/month for 200 orders; Professional from $99/month for 200 orders; 30-day trial Professional lists 4 AutoFile credits a year; extra credits $55 on the pricing page US sales-tax filing with a listed order tier Visit →
Anrok Starter $100 per market per month; higher-volume Custom is a quote A market is one jurisdiction, such as one US state Global calculation plus filing at a published per-market fee Visit →
Avalara Quote-led; no public list price found on the product pages we checked AvaTax is the calculation product; returns are a separate service Teams that need a vendor quote for multi-entity returns Visit →

Pricing checked on October 2, 2026 against each vendor’s public pricing or plan page. Figures are list prices in US dollars unless noted. Free means a standing free plan, not a time-limited trial. Quote means we did not find a public list price.

A percent of volume and a per-market fee cross over at different sales levels. Run both against last quarter before you treat the lower sticker as cheaper.

Calculation is not the same product as filing

Stripe Tax and TaxJar Starter can calculate without becoming your filing desk. Anrok’s published Starter fee includes filing and remittance. Avalara sells calculation and returns as a quoted stack. The expensive mistake is comparing a calculation-only percent with a filing subscription as if they were the same line item.

The 4 providers in detail

1. Stripe Tax

Percent or per-call list price

Best for: businesses already charging on Stripe Checkout, Billing, or Invoicing

Published price No-code pay as you go: 0.5% of volume in jurisdictions where you are registered. API: $0.50 per Transaction call and $0.05 per Calculation call
Subscription alternative $90/month for 200 transactions and 2,000 calculations; $430/month for 1,000 transactions and 10,000 calculations
What is not billed Settings, abandoned checkouts, credit notes, and zero-amount trial invoices
Filing Registration and filing allowances are listed on the subscription tiers, with overages
Tradeoff The 0.5% fee applies to the whole transaction amount, including the tax itself, where you are registered
  • Stripe’s support page lists no-code pay-as-you-go at 0.5% of processed volume where you are registered to collect tax.
  • The same page lists API calls at $0.50 for transactions and $0.05 for calculations, charged in the merchant’s market currency.
  • Subscription tiers start at $90 and $430 a month, with per-transaction overages of $0.50 and $0.48.

2. TaxJar

Order-tier list price

Best for: US sellers who want a monthly price tied to order count

Published price Starter from $39/month (200 orders) or $419 annual; Professional from $99/month (200 orders)
Free vs trial 30-day trial on the pricing page; not a standing free plan
Filing Professional pricing card lists 4 AutoFile credits a year; additional credits $55
Overage Support docs describe flex fees that jump you to the next order tier rather than a per-order penalty
Tradeoff Professional at 200 orders is $99, more than triple Starter, before you count filing credits
  • TaxJar’s pricing page lists Professional from $99 a month at 200 orders and a 30-day trial.
  • The support article updated June 12, 2026 lists Starter at $39 a month for 200 orders, with higher tiers up to multi-million order bands.
  • AutoFile credits and phone support sit on Professional, not on the $39 Starter entry.

3. Anrok

Per-market list price

Best for: SaaS teams that want calculation and filing priced per jurisdiction

Published price Starter $100 per market per month; Custom is a quote
What a market is One jurisdiction. Each US state where you are registered counts. EU OSS counts as one market
Included Exposure monitoring, real-time calculation, filing and remittance, exemption certificates, physical nexus tracking
Extra fees Starter sellers with high transaction volume may pay additional fees, disclosed in the contract
Tradeoff Four US states are $400 a month before any volume fee, even if each state is small
  • Anrok’s pricing page lists Starter at $100 per market per month and says every company pays that rate on Starter.
  • The FAQ defines a market as a jurisdiction where you register and file, with examples for US states, Canadian provinces, and EU OSS.
  • Custom adds e-invoicing, multi-entity, SSO, and an MSA, and is priced by quote.

4. Avalara

Quote-led

Best for: finance teams that already expect a vendor quote for returns and multi-entity tax

Published price No public list price found on the sales-tax product pages checked on October 2, 2026
Free vs trial Not a standing free plan on the pages we checked
Product split AvaTax calculates; returns and registration are separate services
Fit signal Often shortlisted when a retailer or multi-entity group needs a managed returns desk
Tradeoff You cannot compare a list price with Stripe, TaxJar, or Anrok until Avalara quotes
  • Avalara’s sales-tax product pages describe calculation, returns, and registration, without a public monthly list price we could verify.
  • That puts it last under this page’s sort rule. It is not a judgment of filing coverage.
  • Ask for the quote to separate calculation, returns, and registration. Those are often different line items.

Kurums Match

Open the situation that matches the buyer. This is a fit map, not a score.

We already charge on Stripe

Stripe Tax no-code pay as you go is 0.5% where you are registered. A $90 subscription covers 200 transactions.

We want a US order-tier price and a trial

TaxJar Starter starts at $39 a month for 200 orders, with a 30-day trial. Professional starts at $99.

We want filing inside the published fee

Anrok Starter is $100 per market per month and includes filing and remittance.

We need a multi-entity quote

Avalara did not publish a list price on the pages we checked. Ask for calculation and returns as separate lines.

Buying tip: Count jurisdictions where you are already registered, then price Anrok’s per-market fee against TaxJar’s order tier and Stripe’s percent. Filing credits and registration fees sit outside some of those stickers.

How this comparison was put together

We compared sales-tax calculation and filing products a B2B or digital seller would shortlist. Prices were read on October 2, 2026 from Stripe’s tax pricing support page, TaxJar’s pricing page and June 12, 2026 support article, and Anrok’s pricing page. Avalara is last because we did not find a public list price. Order is not a quality ranking. No badge or affiliate term set the sequence.

FAQ

Does Stripe Tax file returns?

Subscription tiers list a yearly registration and filing allowance. Pay-as-you-go pricing on the support page is for calculation. Confirm filing in the dashboard before you assume it is included.

What is a market on Anrok?

A jurisdiction where you register and file. California and New York are two markets. EU OSS is one market.

Is TaxJar the same company as Stripe?

Stripe owns TaxJar. The products are priced separately. This page treats the public prices as separate offers.

Why is Avalara last?

The sort rule puts quote-led vendors last. We did not find a public list price on October 2, 2026. That is not a coverage ranking.
