TL;DR

  • Enterprise vault and session management: CyberArk — quote-based Privilege Cloud and self-hosted options, market-standard for large deployments.
  • Password Safe and remote access: BeyondTrust — quote-based modules for credential vaulting, session management and endpoint privilege.
  • Bundled platform approach: Delinea — Essentials, Standard and Enterprise bundles, quote-based with published feature packaging.
  • Just-in-time and cloud-native: StrongDM or similar lighter options — evaluate against the three above for specific needs; most enterprise PAM is quote-led.

Privileged Access Management (PAM) software vaults, rotates and monitors credentials for human admins, service accounts and machines, and records privileged sessions. Buyers typically compare deployment models (SaaS vs self-hosted), session recording, just-in-time access, endpoint privilege management, and whether pricing is published or quote-based.

Every platform below is evaluated on the same fields: published pricing, free plan or trial, core focus and main limitation. Order is not a quality ranking. We sorted public $0 / published price first and quote-led last. Most enterprise PAM is quote-led.

The 4 companies in detail

1

CyberArk

Best for large-scale enterprise PAM

Best for: large organizations that need a mature vault, session isolation, recording and multi-module privileged access controls.

Attribute CyberArk
Published pricing Quote-based. Official site does not publish list prices; Privilege Cloud and self-hosted options require a custom quote.
Free plan or trial Demo and proof-of-concept available via sales; no permanent free plan.
Core focus Privileged Access Manager (self-hosted or Privilege Cloud), session management, endpoint privilege manager, secrets management and identity security.
Main limitation No public pricing; deployments often require professional services and multi-year contracts.
  • Widely deployed enterprise standard for vaulting, session isolation and privileged account lifecycle.
  • SaaS Privilege Cloud option reduces infrastructure overhead compared with self-hosted.
  • Quote-only pricing makes initial budgeting harder; implementation services are typically extra.
2

BeyondTrust

Best for password and session management

Best for: teams that want a combined password safe, privileged remote access and endpoint privilege management under one vendor.

Attribute BeyondTrust
Published pricing Quote-based for Password Safe, Privileged Remote Access and Endpoint Privilege Management. Official pricing pages direct buyers to request a quote.
Free plan or trial Demo available; no permanent free plan.
Core focus Credential vaulting and rotation, real-time session management and recording, privileged remote access, and least-privilege endpoint controls.
Main limitation Modular pricing means total cost depends on which modules are selected; no public list price.
  • Strong on combining password vaulting with privileged remote access in one platform.
  • Endpoint Privilege Management covers Windows, macOS and Linux.
  • Each major module is typically quoted separately; services often add 20-40% of license cost.
3

Delinea

Best for packaged platform bundles

Best for: organizations that prefer pre-packaged Essentials, Standard or Enterprise bundles covering discovery, vaulting and session auditing.

Attribute Delinea
Published pricing Quote-based. Platform bundles (Essentials, Standard, Enterprise) are sold through sales; no public list prices on the main site.
Free plan or trial Demo available; no permanent free plan.
Core focus Secret Server and broader Delinea Platform for privileged account discovery, vaulting, session monitoring, and privilege elevation.
Main limitation Quote-led; bundle inclusions and user/server counts affect the final quote.
  • Bundled approach can simplify buying compared with à-la-carte modules.
  • Covers discovery, credential management and session auditing in one platform.
  • Pricing requires a sales conversation; public pages do not list dollar amounts.
4

StrongDM

Best for just-in-time infrastructure access

Best for: engineering and DevOps teams that want just-in-time access to infrastructure and databases without managing a traditional credential vault.

Attribute StrongDM
Published pricing Quote-based. Official site does not publish list prices; contact sales for a quote.
Free plan or trial Trial available via sales.
Core focus Just-in-time access, access workflows, session recording and auditing for servers, databases and cloud resources without standing credentials.
Main limitation Quote-only; may not replace a full vault for organizations that require long-term credential storage and rotation.
  • Focuses on just-in-time and zero-standing-privilege access rather than traditional vaulting.
  • Useful for teams that want to reduce the number of standing privileged credentials.
  • Not a full replacement for enterprise vault-centric PAM in all use cases; pricing is custom.

FAQ

Why is most PAM pricing quote-based?
Enterprise PAM is typically sold with custom scope (number of privileged users or accounts, modules, deployment model, support level and services). Vendors do not publish list prices because final cost depends on these variables.

Is there a free PAM tool?

Open-source options such as HashiCorp Vault can cover some secrets use cases, but full enterprise PAM with session recording, vaulting and compliance features from the vendors above is commercial and quote-led. None of the four publish a permanent free production tier.

What is the difference between a vault and just-in-time access?

A traditional vault stores and rotates long-lived credentials. Just-in-time (JIT) access grants temporary elevated access without leaving standing credentials. Some platforms combine both; others specialize in one model.

How long does a typical PAM implementation take?

Implementation varies by scope. Many organizations budget for professional services and a multi-month rollout for discovery, vaulting, session management and integration with directories and ticketing systems.
