⚑ TL;DR
For HR professionals in 2026 the credentials that move careers are still SHRM-CP/SCP and HRCI’s aPHR/PHR/SPHR, both of which can be studied entirely online and cost $400–$1,200 including exam and prep. Below them sit strong platform certificates: HRCI’s Human Resource Associate Professional Certificate on Coursera ($49/month, ~$196 total), Minnesota’s Human Resource Management specialization, Wharton’s People Analytics course, and cheap Udemy and LinkedIn Learning courses for specific skills. We rank eight options and explain who should take which.

HR courses online split into two categories that serve different needs: professional certifications from SHRM and HRCI, which appear by name in job descriptions and require an exam, and platform courses from Coursera, edX, Udemy and LinkedIn Learning, which teach specific competencies such as people analytics, employment law basics or compensation design. In 2026 the profession is also absorbing AI-driven recruiting tools, pay-transparency laws in the EU and several US states, and a wave of global-mobility work as companies hire across borders, so course currency matters more than usual. This guide compares eight options with September 2026 prices, study hours and the credential each produces, for HR generalists, people managers and specialists in talent, compensation or analytics.

Independent review: Kurums is not affiliated with the platforms or instructors listed here. Selections are editorial. Educators can apply for a paid, clearly labelled listing through the Course Listing Program; paid listings never influence editorial rankings.
Key Takeaways

Which HR certification is most recognised?
SHRM-CP (and SHRM-SCP for senior roles) in the US and increasingly globally; HRCI’s PHR/SPHR is the long-established alternative and aPHR is the entry-level credential for people without HR experience.

What is the best online HR course for a beginner?
HRCI’s Human Resource Associate Professional Certificate on Coursera (five courses, ~$196) is the strongest structured entry point and prepares for the aPHR exam.

Can an HR certification be earned fully online?
Study is online for every option here; SHRM and HRCI exams are taken at test centres or via remote proctoring, which both bodies now offer.

How did we select the best HR courses and certifications?

We reviewed 29 programs across the professional bodies (SHRM, HRCI, CIPD), Coursera, edX, Udemy and LinkedIn Learning. Certifications were assessed on how often they appear in 2026 HR job postings in the US, UK, EU and Gulf, total cost and study hours, and whether exams can be taken remotely. Platform courses were assessed on currency (pay transparency, AI in recruiting, hybrid work), instructor credibility and the presence of applied assignments rather than quizzes alone.

We then matched each program to a career stage: entering HR without experience, moving from coordinator to generalist or manager, specialising in analytics, and the UK/Commonwealth route through CIPD. Prices were checked on each body’s or platform’s site in September 2026.

SHRM or HRCI: which HR certification should you choose in 2026?

Both are respected. SHRM-CP has become the more common requirement in US job postings and is growing internationally; HRCI’s PHR has a longer history and its aPHR is the only mainstream credential you can earn with no HR experience. SHRM-CP requires HR-related experience or an HR degree pathway; PHR requires one to four years of professional HR experience depending on education. Exam fees are similar β€” roughly $300–$500 β€” and prep courses add $300–$700.

If you are already in HR, choose based on what your target employers list; if you are trying to enter HR, take the aPHR (or the HRCI Coursera certificate that prepares for it) first, then SHRM-CP once you qualify.

Which HR courses matter for global and expat HR roles?

Companies hiring across borders need HR staff who understand immigration, payroll and employment-law differences by country, and no single certification covers that. Pair a core credential (SHRM-CP or CIPD) with country-specific knowledge; Kurums publishes an Expat HR & Global Mobility hub covering 28 countries and a matching e-book series in the Shop. The Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) from HRCI is the formal credential for international HR.

For analytics-heavy global roles, Wharton’s People Analytics and a people-analytics specialization are more useful than another generalist certificate.

How much does it cost to get HR certified online in 2026?

Budget $500–$1,200 for SHRM-CP or PHR including exam, application and a prep course; $400–$600 for the aPHR route; $150–$250 for a Coursera professional certificate or university specialization; and $2,500–$4,500 for a CIPD Level 5 diploma. Many employers reimburse professional certification fees, and both SHRM and HRCI offer member and early-registration discounts.

Recertification is the hidden cost: SHRM and HRCI credentials require 60 professional development credits every three years, which usually means webinars, conferences or courses β€” LinkedIn Learning and Coursera both count for many activities.

Are free HR courses worth taking?

Yes for orientation and for recertification credits. HubSpot Academy does not cover HR, but Coursera and edX offer free previews, LinkedIn Learning has a one-month trial, and SHRM and HRCI publish free webinars that count toward recertification. Alison and OpenLearn have free HR fundamentals courses that are adequate for administrative staff. None of these replaces a certification for a job search.

Related guides: leadership and management courses for people managers, and project management certifications for HR project leads. The full landscape is in the Kurums Courses & Certifications hub.

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip: Take the HRCI Coursera certificate during a Coursera Plus trial or one paid month if you study intensively; then sit the aPHR within 60 days while the material is fresh. The two together cost less than a single SHRM prep book.
⚠️ Watch out: Unaccredited ‘HR certification’ courses sold by training companies for a few hundred dollars are not recognised by employers. If it is not SHRM, HRCI, CIPD, a university or a platform certificate built by one of those bodies, treat it as a course, not a credential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which HR certification is best for beginners?

The aPHR from HRCI, prepared for with HRCI’s Human Resource Associate certificate on Coursera; it has no experience requirement.

Is SHRM-CP better than PHR?

Can I take the SHRM or HRCI exam online?

Yes, both offer remote-proctored exams as well as test-centre appointments, subject to identity and environment checks.

How long does it take to get HR certified?

Three to six months of part-time study for aPHR, PHR or SHRM-CP; about a year for a CIPD Level 5 diploma.
