What is greenwashing?
Six greenwashing patterns
- Vague words. Eco-friendly, green and natural mean nothing without a specific fact behind them.
- Offsets instead of cuts. Claiming carbon neutrality only by buying offsets hides the footprint rather than shrinking it.
- Distant pledges. Net zero by 2050 with no interim target or plan cannot be checked.
- Hidden trade-offs. Spotlighting one small recycled product to describe a whole company.
- Irrelevant claims. Boasting about meeting a legal minimum, such as being CFC-free.
- Fake labels. Logos and certificates the company designed and awarded itself.
