An HR director at a chip-equipment supplier in Hwaseong opens her 2026 headcount plan to find two process engineers courted by a fab in the new southwest cluster, while her AI postings compete with twice as many rival listings as last year.
Across town, a 41-year-old department-store sales manager reads the KEIS forecast that sales jobs will shrink by a quarter of a million within a decade. He weighs an AI planning course against a care-worker license in a sector short 110,000 people by 2028. Both paths are real. Neither pays the same.
South Korea enters 2026 with one of the tightest headline labor markets in the OECD and one of the weakest employment-growth outlooks. The Ministry of Data and Statistics reported 2.0 percent unemployment in September 2026, with 29.26 million employed and 113,000 jobs added year on year. Yet the Korea Employment Information Service (KEIS) projects employment will grow by only 64,000 between 2024 and 2034, with the active population shrinking from 2030. New jobs cluster in health and welfare and in the AI, semiconductor, shipbuilding and defense supply chains.
This guide, part of the kurums Rising Professions 2026 hub, ranks the fastest growing jobs in South Korea in 2026, explains the drivers, sets out pay in won and dollars, maps the credentials and gives HR teams a hiring playbook. LinkedIn published no South Korea edition of Jobs on the Rise 2026, so the ranking draws on KEIS, Statistics Korea, JobKorea, Robert Walters and government sources.
Which job family is growing fastest in 2026?
AI roles. JobKorea counted about 18,000 AI postings in the first half of 2026, up 128 percent year on year.
Where is the largest absolute job creation?
Care and health. KEIS projects 982,000 extra health and welfare jobs by 2034; elder care faces a 110,000 shortfall by 2028.
What is the biggest constraint on employers?
Supply. The chip industry could be short up to 81,000 workers by 2031, while the 2026 E-9 quota was cut 40 percent to 80,000.
Which jobs are rising fastest in South Korea in 2026?
AI engineers, semiconductor design and process engineers, and long-term care workers lead the 2026 list, followed by nurses, automotive software engineers and data specialists. The ranking combines KEIS 2024–34 projections, JobKorea posting growth, government shortage audits and 2026 salary-survey demand signals.

| 7 | AI planner / AI business strategist | Turning models into products | JobKorea: AI planning +363%, H1 2026 | No published range; IT PM proxy KRW 65–110m, InedJobs 2026 |
| 8 | Shipbuilding welder | Record orders; MASGA cooperation with US yards | Foreign share of yard workers ~5% (2021) to 15%+ | No published range |
| 9 | Defense systems engineer | Record exports; triple-digit hiring at primes | Asia Economy 2026: LIG Nex1 100+ hires | Electrical engineer proxy KRW 45–70m ($29,000–45,000), InedJobs 2026 |
| 10 | Data-center electrical engineer | Data centers scaling to 18.4 GW by 2035 | Korea Times 2026: 550 trillion won plans | KRW 45–70m ($29,000–45,000), InedJobs 2026 |
Three patterns run through the list. Korea’s rising jobs sit at the pay extremes, chip designers near KRW 130 million and care workers at the statutory minimum, while the sales and clerical middle takes the losses. Demand is manufactured by policy as much as by markets. And supply is the binding constraint, which is why 94 percent of manufacturing and 90 percent of AI job seekers in the Robert Walters survey expect a raise this year.
What is driving demand for these professions?
Five forces drive Korea’s 2026 hiring: semiconductor and AI megaprojects, a rapidly aging population, a shipbuilding super-cycle tied to US cooperation, defense exports and automotive software, and a shrinking labor supply that turns each into a shortage.
Semiconductor fabs and AI data centers
In June 2026 the government unveiled megaprojects worth more than 1,350 trillion won ($872 billion), the Korea Times reported: about 800 trillion won for four memory fabs, two each for Samsung and SK hynix, and roughly 550 trillion won of AI data centers scaling to 18.4 GW by 2035.
The talent math does not add up. A Board of Audit and Inspection report in July 2025 put chip workforce demand through 2031 at 181,000, found the Education Ministry’s 151,000 supply target overstated by about 50,000, and warned of a shortfall of up to 81,000.
A super-aged society and the care economy
Health and social welfare is Korea’s largest source of new jobs: KEIS projects 982,000 additional positions by 2034, and Statistics Korea recorded a 207,000 gain in September 2026 alone.
The crunch is sharpest in elder care. The Korea Immigration Service Foundation estimated in March 2026 that Korea will need about 800,000 care workers by 2028 but will have 690,000. About 66 percent of the 657,104 in the sector in 2024 were 60 or older, only 6,644 were foreign nationals, and experienced staff still earn near the minimum wage.
The shipbuilding super-cycle and MASGA
Korean yards are working through a record order book, and the “Make American Shipbuilding Great Again” cooperation has opened a second front: the Korea-US Shipbuilding Partnership Center opened in March 2026, and Hanwha Philly Shipyard aims to train 500 apprentices with $8 million in US federal support.
At home the workforce is aging and leaking. Business Korea reported in February 2026 that the foreign share of shipyard workers rose from about 5 percent in 2021 to over 15 percent, the E-9 shipbuilding quota fell from 5,000 to 2,500, and skilled welders are leaving for chip fabs.
Defense exports and software-defined vehicles
Asia Economy reported from DSK 2026 that LIG Nex1 opened recruitment for more than 100 staff across guided weapons, radar, unmanned systems and AI, while Hanwha Aerospace and KAI are both in triple-digit hiring. Defense primes now compete with chip and auto firms for the same electrical and embedded-software engineers.
Robert Walters names senior automotive software engineers the highest-demand manufacturing role in 2026, at up to KRW 120 million. The bigger surprise is non-coding AI work: JobKorea found non-development AI postings rose 325 percent in H1 2026 to 21.6 percent of all AI postings.
A shrinking workforce and tighter visa quotas
KEIS projects the active population will grow by 346,000 through 2029, then fall by 210,000 between 2030 and 2034, a net gain of 136,000 against 2.56 million in the previous decade.
Policy is tightening the tap. The labor ministry set the 2026 E-9 quota at 80,000, down about 40 percent from 130,000, with 50,000 for manufacturing. The Ministry of Justice cut the E-7-4 skilled-worker quota to 33,000 from 35,000.
What do the rising jobs pay in South Korea?
Advertised 2026 ranges run from roughly KRW 32 million for registered nurses to KRW 130 million for principal chip designers, against a national average of about KRW 42–46 million. Care roles sit near the KRW 10,320 hourly minimum wage; AI and semiconductor roles top the market.
| Role | Typical advertised range (KRW, approx. USD) | Source / year |
|---|---|---|
| AI engineer | KRW 60–120m ($39,000–77,000) | InedJobs, 2026 |
| Principal circuit-design engineer | Up to KRW 130m ($84,000) | Robert Walters Korea, 2026 |
| Senior software engineer, automotive | Up to KRW 120m ($77,000) | Robert Walters Korea, 2026 |
| Semiconductor specialist | KRW 55–95m ($35,000–61,000) | InedJobs, 2026 |
| Data scientist | KRW 55–90m ($35,000–58,000) | InedJobs, 2026 |
| Cybersecurity specialist | KRW 50–85m ($32,000–55,000) | InedJobs, 2026 |
| IT project manager | KRW 65–110m ($42,000–71,000) | InedJobs, 2026 |
| Electrical engineer | KRW 45–70m ($29,000–45,000) | InedJobs, 2026 |
| Registered nurse | KRW 32–48m ($21,000–31,000) | InedJobs, 2026 |
| Factory technician / care worker | KRW 28–38m ($18,000–24,500); care near KRW 10,320/hr | InedJobs 2026; MOEL 2026 |
All figures are typical advertised ranges, not promises, converted at roughly KRW 1,550 per dollar. Robert Walters found 81 percent of finance professionals and 64 percent in tech considering a job change within 12 months. The 2026 minimum wage rose only 2.9 percent to KRW 10,320 per hour, the smallest rise since 1997.
Korea has no statutory pay-transparency rule, but large employers publish bands on JobKorea and Saramin. Fab-adjacent Gyeonggi cities carry engineering premiums, while care pay is flat nationally because it follows National Health Insurance reimbursement. See the series’ country-by-country salary comparison.
Which skills, degrees and certifications unlock these roles?
Korean employers still screen on degree and national license, but 2026 postings increasingly accept vendor certifications and portfolios for AI and cloud roles. The map below pairs each rising profession with the credentials most often named in job ads.
- AI / ML engineer: computer-science or statistics degree, a public portfolio, and AWS Certified Machine Learning – Specialty or Google Professional ML Engineer; Korea’s ADsP/ADP qualifications appear in chaebol postings.
- Semiconductor engineer: electrical or materials engineering, usually a master’s for design; Samsung and SK hynix run contract departments at Sungkyunkwan, Korea, Yonsei and KAIST. Technician routes run through Meister and chip high schools, covered in Korea’s non-degree technical talent pipeline.
- Long-term care worker: the national yoyang bohosa license after a 320-hour course and written exam; foreign candidates sit the same exam.
- Registered nurse: a four-year BSN and the national RN exam; foreign-trained nurses also need TOPIK language proof.
- Automotive software engineer: embedded C/C++, AUTOSAR and ISO 26262 functional-safety training.
- Data scientist / engineer: SQL, Python and Spark, plus AWS Certified Data Engineer; Korean SQLD/SQLP are widely requested.
- Shipbuilding welder: HRD Korea’s national Welding Technician licenses plus yard-internal process tests.

Where are the jobs? Regional hotspots
Gyeonggi’s semiconductor belt around Yongin, Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek and Icheon remains the center of gravity, with the new southwest fab sites, Ulsan and Geoje for shipbuilding, Changwon and Daejeon for defense, and Seoul’s Pangyo corridor for AI software completing the 2026 map.
| Region | Why it matters in 2026 | Roles in demand |
|---|---|---|
| Yongin, Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek, Icheon | Samsung and SK hynix fabs, Yongin cluster build-out, equipment suppliers | Process, equipment, yield and design engineers |
| Southwest memory-fab sites | Two Samsung and two SK hynix fabs in the 800 trillion won program | Fab construction, facilities and process engineers |
| Seoul and Pangyo | Naver, Kakao, fintech and chaebol AI labs; most of JobKorea’s AI postings | AI/ML engineers, data scientists, AI planners |
| Ulsan, Geoje, Busan | HD Hyundai, Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy yards | Welders, hull technicians, naval architects |
| Changwon, Daejeon, Sacheon | Hanwha Aerospace and LIG Nex1 plants, KAI assembly | Radar, guided-weapon and avionics engineers |
| Nationwide, led by aging provinces | Long-term care; +207,000 health and welfare jobs in a year | Care workers, nurses, care coordinators |
The Korea Herald reports the southwest fab plan faces a talent test as engineers resist leaving the capital region.
Which professions are losing ground?
Sales, machine operation, legacy manufacturing crafts and wholesale and retail jobs are shrinking fastest. KEIS projects 268,000 fewer sales workers and 431,000 fewer wholesale and retail jobs by 2034, while construction and youth employment kept falling through 2026.
KEIS expects machine operators and assemblers to fall by about 180,000 and skilled craft workers by 128,000, citing automation and AI, with manufacturing losing 209,000 jobs in conventional car production, apparel and metal processing. In September 2026 construction fell 48,000 and the youth employment rate slipped to 44 percent.
Two nuances: EV battery makers slowed hiring during the EV demand “chasm” and pivoted to energy storage, and the audit board warns that AI graduate supply may exceed demand in some sub-fields. See how to read job-growth data.
How should employers in South Korea hire for scarce rising roles?
Employers should refresh pay bands against 2026 survey ceilings, shift to skills-based screening, reskill staff from declining functions, file E-7 and E-9 applications early in the quota year, and compete on total rewards rather than base salary.
Benchmark against 2026 data
With 94 percent of manufacturing and 90 percent of AI respondents expecting raises, stale bands lose candidates at offer stage. Refresh quarterly and document the full package: severance, bonus, housing loans and education support are under-communicated. Our Asia-Pacific employee benefits guide covers what Korean candidates compare.
Hire for skills and build from within
Non-development roles now make up over a fifth of AI postings, an internal-mobility opportunity: sales planners from shrinking functions already know the business problems, and a six-month AI-planning track with ADsP certification can redeploy them before you pay an external premium. For technical roles, partner with Meister high schools.
Use the visa system, but plan around the quotas
For low- and mid-skill roles the E-9 Employment Permit System is the main route; the 2026 ceiling of 80,000 is allocated through the year, so file early. Technicians use the E-7-4 skilled-worker visa (33,000 in 2026) or the E-7-3 mold-technician pilot; care workers are in an E-7 pilot; degree-holding engineers use uncapped E-7-1 visas. Companies without a local entity typically use an employer of record, but dispatch-labor law restricts which categories a third party may supply. See the kurums guide to expat HR in South Korea.
Compete on brand in a two-tier market
Mid-size suppliers cannot match Samsung’s base pay, so they compete on scope, promotion speed and visible skills investment, and treat Blind and Jobplanet as part of the funnel.
What should job seekers and career changers do in 2026?
Target the demand, not the title: pick one of the five driver sectors, earn the license or certification employers actually list, build evidence of applied work, and use the two-tier market by starting at a supplier and moving up.
- Pick a driver, not a job ad. Semiconductors, AI, care, shipbuilding and defense have named budgets or shortage figures behind them.
- Get the license Korea recognizes. Yoyang bohosa for care, HRD Korea certificates for welding, ADsP/SQLD for data.
- In sales or retail? Move toward AI planning. Non-development AI roles grew over 300 percent in H1 2026 and value domain knowledge.
- Consider the regions. Fabs and yards outside Seoul pay relocation premiums because engineers will not move.
- Show work, not words. Kia, SK hynix and LG Electronics now test AI problem-solving; a public repo beats a certificate list.
- Time the move. Experienced AI postings grew 140 percent against 55 percent for graduates.
- Keep Korean and English sharp. Defense roles are Korean-first; MASGA roles are English-heavy. See the skills behind 2026’s rising jobs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did LinkedIn publish a Jobs on the Rise 2026 list for South Korea?
No. LinkedIn released 2026 editions for a limited set of countries and South Korea was not among them, so this ranking relies on KEIS, Statistics Korea, JobKorea, Robert Walters and government sources.
What is the fastest growing job in South Korea in 2026?
By posting growth, AI roles: JobKorea recorded a 128 percent rise in AI postings in the first half of 2026, led by AI content creator (+405 percent). By absolute job creation, health and social welfare leads, with KEIS projecting 982,000 new jobs by 2034.
How much do semiconductor engineers earn in Korea in 2026?
Robert Walters’ 2026 survey puts principal circuit-design engineers at up to KRW 130 million (about $84,000) and senior software engineers at up to KRW 120 million; broader semiconductor roles are advertised at KRW 55–95 million per InedJobs 2026. These are advertised ranges, not guarantees.
Can foreign workers fill Korea’s shortage occupations in 2026?
Partly. The 2026 E-9 quota was cut to 80,000 and the E-7-4 skilled quota to 33,000, so low- and mid-skill routes are tighter than in 2024–25. Care workers and mold technicians are in E-7 pilots, and degree-holding engineers can use uncapped E-7-1 professional visas.
