An HR director at a Johannesburg insurer is signing off the 2026 hiring plan: two cybersecurity analysts, a data engineer and an actuary. Each requisition has been open four months; the agency keeps returning the same five names.
In Gqeberha, a 31-year-old retail supervisor with a matric is weighing two exits from a stalled career: a bridging course into nursing, or an international call-centre job with a path to team leader.
South Africa enters the last quarter of 2026 with the toughest headline labour market in the G20: Stats SA’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey for Q2 2026 put official unemployment at 33.6%, with 8.5 million people unemployed and youth unemployment at 47.4%. Beneath that number, demand is sharply uneven: Pnet’s September 2026 Job Market Trends Report shows Medical & Health hiring up 85% year-on-year, and over half of employers in the Xpatweb 2026 Critical Skills Survey say unfilled vacancies constrain their business.
This guide ranks the professions rising fastest in South Africa in 2026, explains the drivers, shows pay in rand and US dollars, maps the credentials and sets out how employers should hire. LinkedIn published no South Africa edition of Jobs on the Rise 2026, so the ranking draws on Stats SA, Pnet, CareerJunction, Xpatweb and the Critical Skills List. It is part of the Rising Professions 2026 hub.
Which professions are rising fastest?
Nurses lead on volume (Pnet Medical & Health +85% year-on-year); cybersecurity, data and AI engineers, civil engineers and artisans lead on scarcity (Xpatweb 2026).
What do they pay?
Pnet’s 2026 advertised ranges run from R21,000–R30,000 a month for a registered nurse ($1,250–$1,800) to R40,000–R62,000 ($2,400–$3,700) for cyber and data specialists.
What should employers do?
Benchmark monthly, hire on demonstrated skills, build pipelines through learnerships, and use the Critical Skills Work Visa for the 142 gazetted occupations when local search fails.
Which jobs are rising fastest in South Africa in 2026?
Nurses and pharmacists are growing fastest in volume; cybersecurity, data and AI engineers, civil and electrical engineers and artisans are hardest to fill; warehouse, logistics and call-centre roles add the most entry-level jobs. The table combines growth and scarcity signals.
| Rank | Profession | Why it is rising | Demand signal (source) | Typical advertised pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| 9 | Cost and management accountant; actuary and auditor | Finance +11,000 jobs in Q2 2026; tiny actuarial pool | Cost & Management Accounting #2 trending job (March 2026); Critical Skills List | Cost accountant R36,250–R47,000/mo ($2,170–$2,810) — Pnet 2026 |
| 10 | International customer-service (BPO) agent | Offshore campaigns for UK, US and Australian clients | BPESA: 8,180 international jobs in one quarter | R10,000–R13,000/mo ($600–$780) — Pnet 2026 |
The list splits into high-volume occupations (nurses, warehouse staff, call-centre agents) where vacancies are plentiful but pay is modest, and high-scarcity occupations (cyber, data, engineering, actuarial) where a few qualified candidates set the price. Most require statutory registration or a trade test, which is why supply responds slowly: the average job search runs about 15 months, according to Pnet, but electricians and construction workers are placed in 8 to 11 months.
What is driving demand for these professions?
Five forces explain the 2026 list: a structural nursing shortage, the energy transition, cloud and AI investment paired with an acute cyber threat, a construction recovery against an artisan gap, and logistics reform plus services exports.
A structural healthcare staffing gap
The Department of Health’s nursing workforce report projects a gap of 131,000 to 166,000 nurses by 2030, with public-sector vacancy rates of 15.4% for specialist nurses and 25% for nurse educators, and one in five professional nurses is 55 or older.
Medical & Health has therefore led Pnet’s growth table all year, from +69% year-on-year in January to +85% in August, and CareerJunction lists nurses and pharmacists among the hardest roles to fill.
The energy transition and the grid
The REIPPPP has secured 9.6 GW and R292 billion of investment since 2011, and the private pipeline stands at 117 GW (TechCentral, January 2026). In Bid Window 7, eight solar projects totalling 1,760 MW were awarded with R31.4 billion of investment and 6,971 job-years.
The constraint is now the grid: SAPVIA estimates more than 14,000 km of new transmission is needed this decade, with the first independent lines due no earlier than 2028, making electrical and energy engineers, high-voltage technicians and millwrights the bottleneck roles.
Cloud, AI and an acute cyber threat
Microsoft committed a further R5.4 billion to cloud and AI infrastructure through 2027, on top of R20.4 billion spent on Johannesburg and Cape Town data centres, and is funding 50,000 AI, data, cyber and cloud certifications. Pnet counts AI postings up 352% since 2019 while total IT vacancies fell 5%.
Interpol’s 2026 African Cyberthreat Assessment attributes 92% of Africa’s ransomware detections to South Africa, and the Joint Standard on Cybersecurity and ICT Risk Management, binding on financial institutions since June 2025, forces boards to staff resilience and incident-response functions. Cybersecurity analysts top Xpatweb’s new AI category.
Construction recovery and the artisan gap
Construction was one of only three industries to add jobs in Q2 2026 (+39,000, Stats SA), and Pnet’s Building & Construction demand rose 28% year-on-year in May. Xpatweb finds 29% of employers struggling to hire engineers and 25% artisans, the largest shortages after ICT.
Mining shed 26,000 jobs in Q2 2026, yet mining engineers and metallurgists remain on the Critical Skills List as the Critical Minerals Strategy shifts demand to processing and automation.
Logistics reform and business-services exports
Eleven private operators have been granted access to Transnet’s freight-rail network, expected to add 20 million tonnes a year from 2026/27 towards a 250-million-tonne target by 2029; Pnet put Warehousing & Logistics demand up 14% year-on-year in August.
In parallel, the global business services sector added 8,180 international jobs in one quarter (April to June 2025), according to BPESA, and targets 500,000 jobs by 2030 under the National GBS Incentive Programme.
What do the rising jobs pay in South Africa?
Advertised monthly cost-to-company ranges in 2026 run from about R10,000 for a call-centre operator to R68,000 for a civil engineer, with cybersecurity, DevOps and data engineers at R40,000–R62,000. Figures are Pnet national averages at R16.7 per dollar.
| Role | Typical advertised monthly range (ZAR, USD) | Source / year |
|---|---|---|
| Civil engineer | R49,211–R68,264 ($2,950–$4,090) | Pnet Job Market Trends, Sept 2026 |
| Electrical engineer | R45,000–R65,000 ($2,690–$3,890) | Pnet 2026 via BusinessTech, Feb 2026 |
| DevOps / cloud engineer | R45,000–R62,000 ($2,690–$3,710) | Pnet Job Market Trends, Jan 2026 |
| Data engineer | R42,900–R59,100 ($2,570–$3,540) | Pnet Job Market Trends, Jan 2026 |
| Cybersecurity specialist | R40,000–R60,000 ($2,400–$3,590) | Pnet Job Market Trends, Jan 2026 |
| Cost and management accountant | R36,250–R47,000 ($2,170–$2,810) | Pnet 2026 via BusinessTech, Feb 2026 |
| Millwright | R28,802–R35,610 ($1,720–$2,130) | Pnet Job Market Trends, July 2026 |
| Registered nurse | R20,919–R30,012 ($1,250–$1,800) | Pnet Job Market Trends, Feb 2026 |
These are advertised ranges, not promises, set against rising costs: Pnet’s June 2026 report links a 9% fall in hiring partly to the 8.8% Eskom tariff increase.
No statute requires salary ranges in adverts, but the Employment Equity Act requires income-differential reporting and the Companies Amendment Act obliges public companies to disclose pay gaps, so equity audits increasingly precede offers. Gauteng leads in finance and IT pay, and remote roles, up 28% in the first half of 2026, increasingly price against Johannesburg wherever the candidate lives.
Which skills, degrees and certifications unlock these roles?
Most rising South African roles are gated by a statutory register or a trade test rather than a particular university. The path is the accredited qualification, professional-body registration, then an internationally recognised certification.
- Registered and specialist nurse: a SANC-accredited Diploma or Bachelor of Nursing, community service, then Nursing Council registration; a postgraduate diploma in critical care or midwifery qualifies for the Critical Skills List.
- Cybersecurity specialist: CompTIA Security+ or Microsoft SC-200 to enter, CISSP or CISM for senior roles, Microsoft AZ-500 for cloud. A degree is optional; incident experience is not.
- Data and AI/ML engineer: Azure Data Engineer Associate, AWS Certified Data Engineer or Google Professional Data Engineer on top of SQL and Python; a BSc in statistics or computer science is the usual base.
- Civil, electrical and energy engineer: an ECSA-accredited BEng or BSc(Eng), then Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration; project roles add PMP, wind sites require GWO Basic Safety Training.
- Artisans: a QCTO occupational qualification, an apprenticeship or learnership, then the national trade test for the Red Seal.
- Accountants, auditors and actuaries: CA(SA) through SAICA, CIMA for management accounting, IRBA registration for audit, and Fellowship of the Actuarial Society of South Africa, which averages eight years.

Where are the jobs? Regional hotspots
Gauteng is the deepest market for finance, IT and engineering; the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal lead business-services exports; the Eastern Cape is the fastest-rising BPO hub; and the Northern Cape, Mpumalanga and Limpopo host energy and mining projects.
| Region | 2026 demand signal (source) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Gauteng (Johannesburg, Pretoria, Centurion) | Finance, Business & Management and IT top Pnet’s demand list; Medical & Health jobs doubled year-on-year | Head offices, banks and insurers, cloud data centres (planned R5.5 billion Centurion facility) |
| Western Cape (Cape Town) | 4,119 international BPO jobs added in one quarter (BPESA) | Business services, fintech, hospital groups |
| KwaZulu-Natal (Durban, Richards Bay) | 2,434 international BPO jobs in a quarter (BPESA) | Port logistics, manufacturing, BPO campuses |
| Eastern Cape (Gqeberha, East London) | Record 900 BPO jobs in a quarter; employment +13,000 in Q2 2026 | Automotive, Coega SEZ, wind farms |
| Northern Cape (Upington, Kathu) | Business & Management opportunities +27% in three months (Pnet) | Utility-scale solar and wind, iron-ore and manganese mining |
| Mpumalanga and Limpopo | Mpumalanga +41,000 jobs in Q2 2026, the most of any province; Limpopo Sales +21% | Energy transition, platinum and chrome mining |
Which professions are losing ground?
Clerical, data-entry and routine administrative roles, generalist marketing and design positions, and parts of mining, manufacturing and agriculture are shrinking, while mid-level IT generalists face a flatter market than headlines suggest. The decline is gradual.
Stats SA recorded Q2 2026 losses in community and social services (−57,000), mining (−26,000), agriculture and manufacturing (−15,000 each); the WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 names bank tellers, postal clerks, data-entry clerks, cashiers and administrative assistants as the fastest-declining roles worldwide to 2030. Pnet’s September 2026 report still lists Teller/Cashier as the second-most-trending title, because turnover keeps declining occupations visible in vacancy tables.
In technology, total IT vacancies fell 5% over three years even as AI postings surged, and Pnet records declining remote demand for data-warehousing and architecture roles. Generalists wait longest: portfolio and risk managers average 20 months per search.
How should employers in South Africa hire for scarce rising roles?
Benchmark pay against live 2026 data, write adverts around demonstrable skills instead of degree titles, grow artisans and nurses through learnerships, promote internally, and use the Critical Skills Work Visa for the 142 gazetted occupations when local search fails.
- Benchmark monthly. Pnet publishes salary snapshots monthly; the spread for a cybersecurity specialist is R20,000, and anchoring to a 2024 guide is why shortlists evaporate.
- Hire on skills. A practical assessment, and dropping “degree essential” where a certification suffices, widens the funnel; CareerJunction finds 39% of management applicants under-qualified, which argues for structured assessment over CV filters.
- Build, not only buy. QCTO artisan learnerships, enrolled-nurse bridging programmes and Microsoft-funded certification places are live in 2026.
- Know the visa routes. The Critical Skills List gazetted on 3 October 2023 (Gazette 49402) covers 142 occupations including data scientist, software developer, ICT security specialist, actuary, energy and mining engineers, millwright and specialist nurses; the next review is expected in 2027. General nurses, electrical engineers and chartered accountants are absent, so those hires use the General Work Visa or Trusted Employer Scheme.
- Consider an EOR or an agency. Foreign employers without a local entity can use an employer of record; see our guide to recruitment agencies and HR consultancies in South Africa before signing exclusivity terms.
- Compete on the package. Medical aid, retirement contributions and hybrid policy matter as much as base pay; see our Middle East and Africa benefits guide.
The full process is in the kurums playbook for recruiting in South Africa; for comparison, see the Nigeria and Brazil editions.
What should job seekers and career changers do in 2026?
Pick a rising profession with a registration route you can realistically complete, get the entry credential within 12 months, target provinces and sectors where demand is measurably growing, and treat each role as a step to the next certification.
- Choose by scarcity and reachability. Nursing, artisan trades and warehouse supervision are reachable from matric; cybersecurity and data engineering from any degree plus certifications; actuarial and engineering registration need the right degree.
- Get one verifiable credential in 12 months. CompTIA Security+, a QCTO trade test, an enrolled-nurse bridging place or a Microsoft-funded cloud certification all fit that window.
- Go where the data says. Stats SA’s provincial tables (Mpumalanga +41,000 jobs, Eastern Cape +13,000 in Q2 2026) point to less-contested markets than Johannesburg.
- Apply for remote and offshored roles. Remote vacancies hit a record in the first half of 2026, led by IT (+44% over two years), and often pay Gauteng rates.
- Register early. Candidate registration with SANC, ECSA or SAICA costs little and signals intent; see the skills behind 2026’s rising jobs for the cross-country pattern.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did LinkedIn publish a Jobs on the Rise 2026 list for South Africa?
No. LinkedIn released 2026 country editions for a limited set of markets and South Africa was not among them, so this ranking combines Stats SA data, Pnet and CareerJunction vacancy trends, the Xpatweb 2026 survey and the Critical Skills List.
Which rising jobs in South Africa do not require a university degree?
Warehouse operations, international call-centre work and the artisan trades (electrician, millwright, refrigeration mechanic) are accessible from matric plus a learnership or trade test; enrolled nursing is a bridging route into registered nursing. Pnet shows electricians placed in 10.5 months against a 15-month average.
Is cybersecurity really in demand in South Africa, or is it hype?
The signal is well documented: Interpol attributes 92% of Africa’s ransomware detections to South Africa, financial institutions have been bound by a cyber-risk Joint Standard since June 2025, the occupation is on the Critical Skills List, and Pnet advertised R40,000–R60,000 a month in January 2026.
Can a foreign professional get a South African work visa for these roles?
If the occupation is on the Critical Skills List gazetted in October 2023 (142 occupations including data scientist, software developer, ICT security specialist, actuary, energy and mining engineers and specialist nurses), the Critical Skills Work Visa applies without a labour-market test, though professional-body registration is required. Unlisted roles use the points-based General Work Visa.
