A finance director at a Jakarta-listed group has signed off a battery-materials line in North Maluku and a data-centre contract in Cikarang. The board wants twenty process engineers, a data-centre operations head and two security analysts by mid-2027. The shortlist is thin, and a Morowali smelter is already courting two candidates.
In Bandung, a garment-factory supervisor whose plant cut a shift is weighing a nutrition diploma for the free-meal kitchens against an occupational-safety certificate. Both want to know which jobs in Indonesia are genuinely growing in 2026, and what they pay.
Indonesia’s labour market looks steady on the surface. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) figures for August 2026, open unemployment eased to 4.75 per cent, 7.38 million people were jobless and employment rose by about 1.44 million year on year to 147.99 million. Yet only 42 per cent of workers hold formal jobs, agriculture still employs 28 per cent of the workforce, and the Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker) logged 63,789 reported layoffs between January and September 2026.
Growth is concentrated in nickel and battery processing, data centres, the digital economy, Danantara’s downstreaming projects and the free nutritious meals programme. This guide ranks the fastest growing jobs in Indonesia 2026, their pay, credentials and hiring routes. It is part of the Rising Professions 2026 hub on kurums.
Which job is rising fastest in Indonesia in 2026?
AI engineer. LinkedIn’s latest Indonesia ranking (Grad Guide 2025) puts it first, ahead of security operations centre analyst and EHS specialist.
Which rising job creates the most positions?
The free meals programme: 26,663 kitchens employed 1.18 million workers by April 2026 (Antara), lifting demand for nutritionists.
What do the rising roles pay?
Michael Page’s 2026 guide puts the top of the range at IDR 200 million a month (about US$11,400) for cybersecurity directors and IDR 140 million (about US$8,000) for data-centre operations directors.
Which jobs are rising fastest in Indonesia in 2026?
AI engineers, cybersecurity analysts and nutritionists lead Indonesia’s 2026 rising professions, followed by data-centre operations staff, safety specialists and metallurgical engineers for the nickel and battery chain. Compliance, product, industrial engineering and logistics complete the top ten.
A caveat: we found no LinkedIn Jobs on the Rise 2026 edition for Indonesia. The closest LinkedIn signal is its Grad Guide 2025 ranking for Indonesian graduates, which we combined with BPS and Kemnaker data, Michael Page’s 2026 salary guide and project hiring figures.
| Rank | Profession | Why it is rising | Demand signal (source) | Typical advertised pay |

The list is investment-led: smelters, battery plants, data halls and state-backed projects explain more than half of the rows. The state is also a direct employer through the meals programme, making nutrition one of few rising professions open to diploma holders outside big cities.
Safety and compliance roles rise alongside growth roles: smelters need EHS staff, data centres need security analysts, digital banks need AML specialists. These enabling roles are often easier entry points.
What is driving demand for these professions?
Five forces explain most of the list: nickel downstreaming and EV batteries, data centres, Danantara’s industrial projects, the free meals programme and a digital economy nearing US$100 billion.
Nickel downstreaming and the EV battery chain
On 8 October 2026 Indonesia shipped its first EV battery exports and launched 11 downstream projects worth US$10.2 billion at the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) in North Maluku, Malay Mail reported, adding more than 10,000 jobs to a park employing 117,000. IWIP and Morowali’s IMIP export about US$28 billion, roughly a tenth of the national total.
IMIP in Central Sulawesi reported US$34.3 billion of investment since 2015 and about 85,000 local workers. The constraint now is metallurgists, process engineers and EHS specialists who can run battery-precursor lines safely.
Data centres in Greater Jakarta and Batam
Maybank, citing the Indonesia Data Center Provider Organization (IDPRO), put national data-centre capacity at about 637 MW in May 2026 and expects roughly 2.7 GW by 2030. PLN reports 1.3 GW of data-centre load in West Java, where campuses are moving to Bekasi and Cikarang.
Batam has about 134 MW live and a reported 1.3–1.8 GW pipeline, and DCI Indonesia plans a 1,000 MW-plus campus on Bintan. Michael Page lists data-centre operations directors among Indonesia’s ten best-paid roles of 2026.
Danantara and state-backed downstreaming
The Danantara sovereign fund has set out 18 priority downstreaming projects worth US$38.63 billion, according to Katadata (January 2026). In February 2026 it broke ground on six phase-one projects worth about US$7 billion across 13 regions, Antara reported.
Phase one includes bauxite processing in Mempawah and Kuala Tanjung, bioethanol in East Java, aviation biofuel at Cilacap and six poultry complexes, all needing project engineers, procurement specialists and safety staff.
The free nutritious meals programme
The Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) programme is the largest single source of new jobs in the country. By April 2026 it reached about 61.9 million beneficiaries through 26,663 kitchens (SPPG) and had created 1.18 million jobs, Antara reported.
Each kitchen is led by a head, a nutritionist and an accountant, posts the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is converting into government contract (PPPK) roles. Qualified nutritionists are scarce outside Java’s cities.
Digital economy, digital banks and AI
Google, Temasek and Bain’s e-Conomy SEA 2025 report put Indonesia’s digital economy at nearly US$100 billion of gross merchandise value in 2025, up 14 per cent, with e-commerce at about US$71 billion and video-commerce transactions up 90 per cent.
It found 80 per cent of Indonesian users interact with AI tools daily. Platforms such as GoTo and digital banks such as Bank Jago need AI engineers, product managers, AML specialists and security analysts.
What do the rising jobs pay in Indonesia?
Senior specialists in rising fields advertise IDR 60–200 million a month (about US$3,400–11,400), according to Michael Page’s 2026 guide, while public-sector nutrition roles in the meals programme pay about IDR 6.7 million (US$380). The national average employee wage is IDR 3.39 million.
| Role | Typical advertised range | Source / year |
|---|---|---|
| Cybersecurity director | Up to IDR 200m (US$11,400) a month, top of range | Michael Page Indonesia, 2026 |
| Compliance director (banking and financial services) | Up to IDR 180m (US$10,200) a month | Michael Page Indonesia, 2026 |
| Plant director (engineering and manufacturing) | Up to IDR 158m (US$9,000) a month | Michael Page Indonesia, 2026 |
| HR director | Up to IDR 150m (US$8,500) a month | Michael Page Indonesia, 2026 |
| VP engineering (digital companies) | IDR 120–150m (US$6,800–8,500) a month | Michael Page 2026, via GNFI |

| Senior logistics manager | IDR 70–90m (US$4,000–5,100) a month | Michael Page 2026, via GNFI |
| Product manager, 5+ years | IDR 60–90m (US$3,400–5,100) a month, before bonus and ESOP | Michael Page 2026, via GNFI |
| SPPG kitchen head, nutritionist or accountant (PPPK) | About IDR 3.7m base plus IDR 3m performance allowance (about US$380 combined) a month | BGN, via Katadata, January 2026 |
| Reference: Jakarta provincial minimum wage | IDR 5,729,876 (US$326) a month | Jakarta UMP 2026, via Kompas TV |
BPS reported an average employee wage of IDR 3.39 million a month (about US$193) in May 2026, so a senior product manager can earn twenty times the average. Michael Page’s figures are senior ceilings; entry pay is a fraction. Indonesia has no general pay-transparency law, so many postings omit salary.
Location matters too. Jakarta’s 2026 minimum wage of about IDR 5.73 million is the highest provincial floor, and engineers at remote parks such as Morowali usually receive site allowances and housing. USD figures are rounded at about IDR 17,600 per dollar.
Which skills, degrees and certifications unlock these roles?
Most rising roles need a relevant degree plus one recognised credential: a cloud or AI certificate for tech, a Kemnaker K3 safety licence for EHS, a nutrition registration (STR) for nutritionists, or a banking risk certificate for compliance.
- AI engineer: a computer science degree plus Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer or AWS machine-learning certification, and a portfolio of deployed projects.
- SOC analyst / cybersecurity: CompTIA Security+ to enter, then CISSP, CISM or CEH; BNSP national competency certificates help in state-owned firms.
- Nutritionist: a D3 or S1 degree in nutrition, the professional registration certificate (STR) and membership of the Indonesian Nutritionists Association (PERSAGI); HACCP food-safety training helps.
- Data-centre operations: an electrical or mechanical engineering degree with Uptime Institute operations credentials or CDCP/CDCS certification.
- EHS specialist: the Kemnaker “Ahli K3 Umum” general occupational-safety certification, often with NEBOSH IGC.
- Metallurgical / process engineer: an S1 in metallurgical, chemical or mining engineering, and the Insinyur Profesional title from the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) for senior roles.
- Compliance and AML: ACAMS’ CAMS credential, plus the risk-management certification (BSMR or LSPP) that banks require for many risk and compliance posts.
- Product and procurement roles: Scrum or PMP for product managers; CIPS for procurement and import specialists.
Kartu Prakerja subsidises short courses and Kemnaker runs an apprenticeship programme. The kurums Courses & Certifications directory lists providers for cloud, security and project credentials, and the MBA & Business Education directory covers management programmes for people moving into leadership. Where are the jobs? Regional hotspots
Greater Jakarta and West Java lead digital, finance and data-centre hiring; Batam and Bintan are the second data-centre cluster; Central Sulawesi and North Maluku lead nickel and battery jobs; meal-programme hiring is nationwide.
| Region | Why it is hiring | Roles in demand |
|---|---|---|
| Jakarta | Digital platforms, digital banks, fintech, head offices | Product, AI, compliance, cybersecurity |
| Bekasi, Cikarang and wider West Java | Data-centre campuses; PLN reports 1.3 GW of data-centre load in West Java (Maybank, 2026) | Data-centre operations, electrical engineers, security |
| Batam and Bintan (Riau Islands) | About 134 MW live and a 1.3–1.8 GW pipeline in Batam; 1,000 MW-plus plan on Bintan (Maybank, 2026) | Critical-facilities engineers, construction managers |
| Morowali, Central Sulawesi | IMIP: US$34.3bn invested 2015–2024, about 85,000 local workers | Metallurgists, process and maintenance engineers, EHS |
| Weda Bay, North Maluku | IWIP: 117,000 workers, 10,000+ jobs from new battery projects (2026) | Battery-materials engineers, EHS, logistics |
| Mempawah, Kuala Tanjung, Cilacap, East Java | Danantara phase-one bauxite, biofuel, bioethanol and salt projects (2026) | Project engineers, procurement, industrial engineers |
| Nationwide, including eastern Indonesia | 26,663 meal-programme kitchens (April 2026) | Nutritionists, kitchen heads, accountants, food-safety staff |
The new capital, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan, is often cited as a jobs engine, but we found no reliable 2026 hiring figures for it, so it does not shape this ranking. Remote-site employers should budget for relocation and rotation; the Asia-Pacific employee benefits guide covers what competitive packages include.
Which professions are losing ground?
Labour-intensive textile, garment and footwear jobs are shrinking, mainly in West Java, Banten and Central Java, while routine clerical roles face slower hiring and early automation.
Kemnaker recorded 63,789 reported layoffs from January to September 2026, led by West Java (13,044), Banten (7,733), East Java (6,154) and Central Java (5,585). These are reported cases, not total job losses. The pattern is familiar from the 2025 bankruptcy of textile maker Sritex, one of the largest in the sector.
White-collar entry is tighter too: LinkedIn found openings per applicant fell 11 per cent between March 2024 and March 2025. Data entry, basic customer service and routine bookkeeping are most exposed to automation.
This is not collapse: total employment grew by about 1.44 million in the year to August 2026 and formal jobs by about 410,000. The shift is from low-margin assembly in Java towards processing, energy, digital and public-service roles.
How should employers in Indonesia hire for scarce rising roles?
Benchmark pay on 2026 data, hire on skills, build internal pipelines, use apprenticeships, start RPTKA approvals early for foreign experts, and use an employer of record if you have no Indonesian entity.
- Benchmark realistically. Use 2026 salary guides and provincial minimum wages, and compare total packages including THR, BPJS and site allowances.
- Hire on skills, not titles. Many AI and security candidates are self-taught; practical tests screen better than degree filters.
- Build internal mobility paths. Move quality inspectors into EHS, IT support into SOC analyst roles and electricians into data-centre operations, funding the certification.
- Use apprenticeships and subsidised training. Kemnaker apprenticeships and Kartu Prakerja courses cut entry-level training costs.
- Plan foreign hires early. Expatriates need an approved foreign worker utilisation plan (RPTKA), a work visa and a limited-stay permit (KITAS). Employers pay a DKPTKA levy of US$100 per foreign worker per month and must name Indonesian counterparts for skills transfer, according to ASEAN Briefing. Only job titles on the ministry’s approved list are open to foreigners.
- Use an EOR if you have no entity. An employer of record can hire locally while you test the market.
- Invest in employer brand. Publish progression paths and certification support in every posting.
To reach candidates, compare local and regional boards in the job boards by country directory and the global job platforms comparison. For regional pay context, read what the rising jobs of 2026 pay country by country.
What should job seekers and career changers do in 2026?
Pick a rising field next to your current skills, earn one recognised credential, build visible proof of work and be ready to relocate to an industrial or data-centre hub.
- Map your adjacent move. Factory supervisors fit EHS; IT support fits SOC analysis; accountants fit compliance.
- Earn one credential first. One targeted certificate beats a scattered list of courses.
- Use subsidised training. Kartu Prakerja and Kemnaker apprenticeships cut the cost of switching.
- Build a portfolio. Publish projects or document audits and process improvements.
- Consider relocation. Remote industrial sites pay allowances and promote faster than Jakarta.
- Improve your English. Multinational employers screen for it at senior levels.
- Check pay before you negotiate. Compare offers with 2026 guides and ask about BPJS, THR and allowances.
