Sustainability reporting moved from the marketing department to the audit committee. Europe’s CSRD, even after the Omnibus simplification narrowed its scope, still requires large companies to publish assured, structured sustainability statements; investors, lenders, and customers increasingly expect the same discipline elsewhere. ESG reporting software is where that data is collected, controlled, and disclosed. This guide compares the platforms on identical criteria — distinct from carbon measurement, which has its own guide.
Asset-heavy enterprise: Sphera — EHS, product sustainability, and LCA depth.
ESG data management: Novisto — collection workflows and data quality.
CSRD-native mid-market: Coolset — broad framework coverage for 500–5,000-employee firms.
AI-assisted ESRS mapping: Position Green — automation plus advisory.
Free frameworks: EFRAG ESRS & VSME standards — the rules themselves.
Scope: platforms for collecting, controlling, and disclosing sustainability information — CSRD/ESRS, ISSB, GRI, CDP, and voluntary reporting. Emissions measurement itself is covered in our carbon accounting guide; clean-energy claims in our CFE guide. Six entries, identical criteria; order follows buyer size, not rank.
Criteria: framework coverage, audit and assurance readiness, data collection and controls, integration with finance and carbon tools, licensing, and the main tradeoff. Pricing is custom or on request across the category (checked October 9, 2026). Regulatory notes are general information, not legal advice.

The Platforms in Detail
Workiva
The finance-grade hub
Best for: listed companies that want sustainability disclosures under the same controls as their financial statements.
| Framework coverage | CSRD/ESRS, ISSB, SEC-style and voluntary frameworks |
| Assurance readiness | Strong — audit trails and controls inherited from financial reporting |
| Data collection | Connected data and workflows across the organization |
| Integration | Financial reporting, audit, and risk in one platform |
| Licensing | Custom pricing. Checked October 9, 2026 |
| Main tradeoff | Most natural for finance-led programs; less specialized in EU supply-chain rules |
- When sustainability data must be assured like financial data, using the same control environment reduces duplicated effort and audit friction.
- Finance teams already familiar with Workiva for financial filings can extend into ESG with less retraining.
- Recognized as a leader in independent market assessments, which helps when procurement committees want external validation.
Sphera
The asset-heavy specialist
Best for: manufacturers, chemicals, and energy companies where environmental, health, safety, and product data drive sustainability reporting.
| Framework coverage | Broad, with deep environmental and product sustainability content |
| Assurance readiness | Enterprise-grade data governance |
| Data collection | EHS and operational data integration |
| Integration | Industry-leading life-cycle assessment database |
| Licensing | Custom pricing. Checked October 9, 2026 |
| Main tradeoff | Complex implementation; best for very large organizations |
- Life-cycle data matters for product-level claims and Scope 3, where many reporting programs struggle most.
- EHS integration connects safety and environmental operations to disclosure, avoiding separate, inconsistent datasets.
- Suits organizations where sustainability is operational rather than just a reporting exercise.
Novisto
The ESG data manager
Best for: companies whose main pain is collecting consistent ESG data from many contributors on time.
| Framework coverage | Multiple frameworks with mapping between them |
| Assurance readiness | Workflow approvals and data-quality checks |
| Data collection | Automated workflows with AI-assisted data-quality features |
| Integration | Connects to carbon and operational systems |
| Licensing | On request. Checked October 9, 2026 |
| Main tradeoff | Less focus on carbon calculation — pair with a carbon tool |
- Most reporting failures are data-collection failures: late, inconsistent, or unowned inputs. Workflow tools address that directly.
- Framework mapping means one data point can serve several disclosures, reducing duplicated requests to the business.
- Pairs naturally with dedicated carbon accounting platforms (see our carbon guide).
Coolset
The mid-market CSRD platform
Best for: companies of roughly 500 to 5,000 employees facing compliance-driven reporting with limited internal teams.
| Framework coverage | Wide coverage across EU frameworks in one platform |
| Assurance readiness | Compliance-focused structure |
| Data collection | Guided workflows for smaller teams |
| Integration | Includes carbon accounting capabilities |
| Licensing | On request. Checked October 9, 2026 |
| Main tradeoff | Its own published comparisons rank itself favorably — validate independently |
- Mid-market companies often need guidance as much as software, and compliance-led platforms provide both.
- Combining carbon and reporting reduces the number of systems small sustainability teams must manage.
- Particularly relevant for suppliers asked for data by larger customers in scope of CSRD.
Position Green
The AI-assisted mapper
Best for: companies wanting technology plus advisory support to map data to ESRS requirements efficiently.
| Framework coverage | ESRS-focused with broader framework support |
| Assurance readiness | Structured mapping supports audit preparation |
| Data collection | AI-driven data mapping; claims automation of over 30% of reporting |
| Integration | Advisory services alongside software |
| Licensing | Custom pricing. Checked October 9, 2026 |
| Main tradeoff | Newer to market; check references for your sector |
- Mapping thousands of potential data points to the right ESRS requirements is labor-intensive, and automation can shorten it.
- Advisory support helps first-time reporters interpret materiality and disclosure requirements.
- Vendor-claimed automation rates should be tested on your own data during a pilot.
EFRAG ESRS & VSME
The free rules
Best for: every reporter — the standards define what must be reported, regardless of software.
| Framework coverage | The European Sustainability Reporting Standards and the voluntary SME standard |
| Assurance readiness | Defines the disclosures auditors will check |
| Data collection | Implementation guidance and datapoint lists |
| Integration | Software platforms implement these requirements |
| Licensing | Free. Checked October 9, 2026 |
| Main tradeoff | Rules, not workflow |
- Reading the standards directly helps teams challenge vendor claims about what is required.
- The simplified datapoint set expected after Omnibus reduces scope substantially — confirm the latest delegated acts before buying for the old requirements.
- VSME offers smaller companies a lighter voluntary path, often enough to answer customer data requests.
What Omnibus Changed — and What It Didn’t
The EU’s Omnibus simplification significantly narrowed CSRD: according to market analyses, scope now focuses on companies with more than 1,000 employees and turnover above €450 million, later waves are pushed back, and the number of ESRS datapoints is expected to fall from over 1,100 to roughly 400–500 once the revised delegated act is finalized. Many mid-sized companies are now outside mandatory scope.
What did not change is the direction of travel. In-scope companies still need assured reporting, and out-of-scope suppliers still receive data requests from in-scope customers and banks. Software choices should reflect the reduced requirements — there is no need to buy for 1,100 datapoints — but not assume reporting pressure has disappeared.
Reporting Software vs Carbon Accounting Software
Carbon accounting tools calculate emissions; reporting tools collect, control, and disclose a much wider set of information, including social and governance topics, policies, targets, and narrative. Some platforms do both, but most large companies run a specialized carbon tool feeding a reporting hub. Choosing well means deciding where calculation lives and where disclosure lives — and making sure they share consistent data.
The integration point matters for assurance. Auditors will trace reported figures back to source data; if emissions are calculated in one system and reported from another, the hand-off must be documented and controlled.
Assurance Is the Real Requirement
Assured reporting changes the software question from “can it produce a report?” to “can it prove where every number came from?” Audit trails, approvals, versioning, and evidence attachments are what distinguish platforms in practice. Companies moving from voluntary to assured reporting often discover their existing spreadsheets or lightweight tools cannot provide that evidence.
A useful exercise is a mock audit: pick several reported data points and try to trace each back to source documents with dates and approvers. Wherever that trail breaks is where software, process, or ownership needs strengthening before the real assurance engagement.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a first CSRD implementation take?
It varies with company size and data maturity, but most first-time reporters need many months for double materiality assessment, data mapping, process design, and assurance preparation. Starting with a gap analysis against the current ESRS datapoint list shortens the path considerably.
Who should own sustainability reporting internally?
Increasingly a shared model: sustainability teams own content and materiality, while finance owns controls, timelines, and the link to the annual report. Clear ownership of each data point is what makes assurance manageable.
Is CSRD still relevant after the Omnibus changes?
Yes for in-scope companies, which still face assured reporting. Many smaller companies are now out of mandatory scope but may still receive data requests from customers and lenders.
Do I need separate carbon and ESG reporting software?
Not always, but large companies often use a specialized carbon tool feeding a reporting platform. Smaller companies may use a single integrated tool.
What is VSME?
A voluntary sustainability reporting standard for smaller companies, designed to answer common data requests from customers and banks with less effort.
How do I compare vendor claims about automation?
Test them on your own data in a pilot. Automation rates vary widely depending on how your data is structured.
Does this apply outside the EU?
ISSB-based standards, other national rules, and investor expectations create similar needs elsewhere. Many platforms support multiple frameworks.
How does reporting software relate to clean-energy claims?
Renewable electricity claims in reports should be backed by certificate and tracking evidence; our CFE tracking guide covers that layer.
