What is an online MBA, and how is it different from the campus degree?
An online MBA is the same master’s degree in business administration, awarded by the same school, with the same letters on the diploma. What changes is the delivery: recorded lectures, live virtual seminars, discussion boards and group projects across time zones, sometimes with one or two short residencies on campus. At most reputable schools the diploma does not say “online”, and employers increasingly do not ask.
The real differences are practical. You keep your job and salary, you usually pay less in total once lost earnings are counted, and you study over two to four years instead of one or two. What you give up is the concentrated network of a full-time cohort and the on-campus recruiting that feeds consulting and banking hiring. For managers who already have a career and want the credential plus the toolkit, that trade is often the right one.
How much does an online MBA cost in 2026?
The range is wide, and the price is only loosely related to quality. The table below groups the market as it stands this year; check the school’s own page for the exact figure, since most quote per-credit tuition and change it annually.
Add the hidden lines: residency travel, exam proctoring, technology fees and, for UK and European programmes, the exchange-rate exposure if you earn in another currency. Employer sponsorship is more common for online formats than for full-time study, and most schools have a dedicated page on it.
Which accreditations matter?
Three bodies dominate: AACSB (US-based, the broadest), EQUIS (European, run by EFMD) and AMBA (UK-based, focused specifically on MBA programmes). A school holding all three is “triple-accredited” — around 1% of business schools worldwide, and several online programmes in this directory come from them. Programme-level accreditation should be checked on the accreditor’s own register, not on the school’s website. In the US, also confirm the university’s regional accreditation; in the UK, that the awarding body has degree-awarding powers.
Synchronous, asynchronous or blended?
Time zone is the detail most applicants underestimate. A US East Coast programme with live Tuesday-evening classes runs at 02:00 in Istanbul and 09:00 in Singapore. Ask for the actual timetable of a current cohort before applying.
What do admissions look like?
Most programmes ask for a bachelor’s degree, three to five years of work experience, one or two essays, references and an interview. The GMAT or GRE is now optional or waivable at the majority of online MBAs, typically for candidates with strong professional experience or a quantitative degree. English-language tests apply to non-native speakers at UK, US and Australian schools. Rolling admissions with two to six intakes a year are the norm, which makes online programmes far more forgiving on timing than full-time ones.
What usually goes wrong?
Three problems account for most drop-outs and regrets. The first is workload: a serious online MBA takes 15–20 hours a week, and students who plan for eight find out in the second module. The second is choosing on brand alone and discovering the format does not fit — a live-class programme for someone who travels every week. The third is ignoring the cohort: the value of an MBA is disproportionately in the people, and programmes with small live sections, group projects and residencies produce far more of it than pure self-paced study.
Frequently asked questions
Do employers respect online MBAs?
For accredited programmes from established schools, yes — and the diploma is normally identical to the campus version. Recruiters care about the school, the accreditation and what you did with the degree, far more than the delivery mode. Where the online MBA still lags is structured campus recruiting for consulting and investment banking, which favours full-time cohorts.
How long does an online MBA take?
Most programmes are designed for 24 months of part-time study, with accelerated tracks of 16–18 months and flexible tracks stretching to four or five years. The credit load per term is what determines the pace, and most schools let you slow down or speed up between terms.
Is the GMAT required?
Less and less. A large share of online MBAs in this directory offer test waivers for candidates with several years of experience or a quantitative background. A strong GMAT or GRE still helps for scholarships and for the most selective programmes.
Can I get a student visa for an online MBA?
No. Online study does not qualify for study visas in the US, UK, Canada or Australia. If you want to relocate, a full-time or blended programme with substantial in-person study is the route.
What is the cheapest reputable online MBA?
Programmes delivered on Coursera-style platforms by accredited universities — Illinois Gies iMBA is the best-known — sit around $25,000 in total. Below roughly $15,000 the field is dominated by unaccredited or nationally-only accredited providers, and the degree may not be recognised outside the awarding country.
How this directory is compiled
Every institution on this page was added by our editors from publicly available information: the school or university, the programme it is known for in one line, and a link to its own site. No school paid to be listed in the free section, none was asked for approval, and inclusion here is not a ranking or a recommendation — it is a starting point for a shortlist you should verify against the institution’s accreditation, admissions page and current fees.
The block at the top of the page is different and is labelled as such. Positions there are paid: a school or programme provider chooses a daily bid and a number of days, pays once, and sits above the free listings for that period, ordered by bid. That is advertising, it is disclosed on every listing, and it has no influence on our editorial course guides or on the Kurums Trust badges, which are earned against published criteria and are never for sale.
Tuition, formats, intake dates and rankings change every year in this sector, so we keep descriptions short and factual. Check the programme’s own page for the current fee, the accreditation body’s register for its status, and treat anything you read in a directory — including this one — as a list of candidates rather than an answer.
