Executive education programs and business school certificates

Open-enrolment programmes and certificates for managers and executives from Harvard Business School Online, Wharton, Stanford, MIT Sloan, INSEAD, Columbia, Kellogg, IMD, LBS, Cambridge, Oxford, Booth, Berkeley, IESE and HEC Paris, plus online providers Emeritus and GetSmarter — from two-day workshops to multi-month certificates. Sponsored listings are paid placements ordered by daily bid; every other institution below is listed free by our editors.

How this ranking works. Sponsored listings are paid placements ordered by daily bid; the price shown next to each position is what it takes to sit above it today. Ties keep the earlier bid on top; locked positions keep their number. This is not an editorial ranking — Kurums Trust badges are earned separately, are never for sale, and are never affected by what a company pays here. Free listings below the sponsored block are compiled by our editors from public information and shown A–Z: no company paid to appear there, and inclusion is not a recommendation. Click counts are public and all-time. Full rules.

What is executive education?

Executive education is non-degree teaching for working managers, sold by business schools alongside their MBAs. It comes in three forms: open-enrolment programmes that anyone can join, from a two-day negotiation workshop to a four-week Advanced Management Program; certificates that bundle several courses into a credential; and custom programmes designed and delivered for a single company. The listings on this page are open-enrolment providers, including the online arms that schools now run directly or through partners such as Emeritus and GetSmarter.

No degree is awarded. What you get is the content, the faculty, a certificate of completion and — in residential programmes — a peer group of similar seniority, which for many participants is the main reason to attend.

Formats and what they cost

FormatLengthTypical price (USD)Examples
Short online course4–8 weeks, 5–8 hours a week$1,500 – $4,000HBS Online, Emeritus, GetSmarter, Wharton Online
Online certificate3–12 months, several courses$5,000 – $20,000HBS Online CORe, Columbia Certificate in Business Excellence, MIT Sloan executive certificates
Residential open programme2–5 days$4,000 – $15,000Kellogg, Booth, LBS, Cambridge, Oxford short programmes
Flagship general-management programme3–8 weeks, often modular$40,000 – $90,000Harvard AMP, Stanford SEP, Wharton AMP, IMD, IESE AMP, INSEAD AMP

Residential prices usually include accommodation and meals on campus; online prices rarely include anything beyond access, and some providers charge extra for the certificate itself. Companies buy most seats in the residential tier, individuals most seats online.

“Harvard certificate” is not “Harvard degree”. Certificates from HBS Online, Stanford Online or MIT Sloan Executive Education are real, useful and taught by the schools’ faculty — but they do not make you an alumnus of the school in most cases, and employers know the difference. Use them for the learning and the signal of initiative, not as a substitute for a degree on a CV.

What should you compare before choosing?

CriterionWhat to ask
Who teachesNamed faculty of the school, or partner instructors? Live or recorded?
CohortSeniority, size and mix of the last cohort; how much peer interaction the format actually includes
Alumni statusDoes completion grant any alumni benefits, network access or stackable credit towards a degree?
AssessmentIs there graded work, or is the certificate awarded for attendance?
Corporate termsGroup discounts, invoicing, cancellation and transfer rules for company-funded seats
Refund policyOnline providers differ widely; several allow withdrawal within the first week

How companies buy executive education

Learning and development budgets typically fund the residential tier through a nomination process: HR selects high-potential managers, the school invoices the company, and the programme is tied to a promotion or succession plan. Online programmes are increasingly bought in bulk under enterprise agreements with providers such as Emeritus or the schools themselves. For an individual asking an employer to pay, the strongest case is a programme with a clear link to a role change and a written learning plan — most schools provide a sponsorship-request template for exactly this.

Kurums compares leadership and management courses under $3,000 — HBS Online, Michigan, SHRM and project-management certifications — in the Courses & Certifications directory. That guide is editorial and cannot be bought; the list above is a directory, where the sponsored block is paid.

Frequently asked questions

Does executive education make me an alumnus of the school?

Usually only for the flagship general-management programmes (Harvard AMP, Stanford SEP, Wharton AMP and equivalents) and some multi-course certificates. Short courses and most online programmes do not confer alumni status. Each school states its policy on the programme page.

Are HBS Online and similar certificates worth it?

For the content and discipline, most participants say yes; the case-based format is close to the classroom. As a credential, they signal initiative rather than qualification. They are best used to fill a specific gap — finance for non-finance managers, for example — rather than as a general career lever.

What is the difference between Emeritus, GetSmarter and the schools’ own online programmes?

Emeritus and GetSmarter are online programme managers that build and run courses with university faculty and market them under the university’s name; the school approves the content and issues the certificate. Schools such as HBS, Stanford and MIT Sloan also run programmes directly. Quality is similar at the top end; check who teaches and who grades.

Can executive education count towards a degree?

Some schools now offer stackable credit: certificates that can be applied towards an MBA or master’s at the same institution. It remains the exception, and credit rarely transfers between schools.

How do I get my employer to pay?

Link the programme to a business need, a role change or a succession plan; provide the school’s outline and cost; and propose a written commitment on how the learning will be applied. Schools publish sponsorship letters and business-case templates, and many companies have an annual L&D nomination window worth asking about.

How this directory is compiled

Every institution on this page was added by our editors from publicly available information: the school or university, the programme it is known for in one line, and a link to its own site. No school paid to be listed in the free section, none was asked for approval, and inclusion here is not a ranking or a recommendation — it is a starting point for a shortlist you should verify against the institution’s accreditation, admissions page and current fees.

The block at the top of the page is different and is labelled as such. Positions there are paid: a school or programme provider chooses a daily bid and a number of days, pays once, and sits above the free listings for that period, ordered by bid. That is advertising, it is disclosed on every listing, and it has no influence on our editorial course guides or on the Kurums Trust badges, which are earned against published criteria and are never for sale.

Tuition, formats, intake dates and rankings change every year in this sector, so we keep descriptions short and factual. Check the programme’s own page for the current fee, the accreditation body’s register for its status, and treat anything you read in a directory — including this one — as a list of candidates rather than an answer.
