How this ranking works. Sponsored listings are paid placements ordered by daily bid; the price shown next to each position is what it takes to sit above it today. Ties keep the earlier bid on top; locked positions keep their number. This is not an editorial ranking β€” Kurums Trust badges are earned separately, are never for sale, and are never affected by what a company pays here. Free listings below the sponsored block are compiled by our editors from public information and shown A–Z: no company paid to appear there, and inclusion is not a recommendation. Click counts are public and all-time. Full rules.

What is an Executive MBA?

An Executive MBA is an MBA designed for experienced managers who stay in their jobs while studying. Classes run on alternate weekends, in one-week modules every few months, or in a mix of both; the cohort is older, typically 35 to 45, and admissions weight leadership experience far more than test scores. The degree awarded is an MBA. What distinguishes the format is the peer group, the pace and the price.

Because participants are already senior, the teaching leans on their experience: cases are discussed by people who have run the situations in question, and the network is made of directors and founders rather than analysts. That is the core product, and it explains why the best EMBAs are the most expensive degrees in business education.

How much does an Executive MBA cost?

TierTypical total fee (USD)Examples in this directory
Global, multi-campus$200,000 – $250,000Wharton, Kellogg, Chicago Booth, TRIUM, Columbia
Leading European and Asian$120,000 – $200,000INSEAD GEMBA, London Business School, IESE, HEC Paris, Oxford, Cambridge, CEIBS
Regional and national$40,000 – $110,000ESCP, SDA Bocconi, Michigan Ross, Duke Fuqua, KoΓ§ University

Fees usually include tuition, materials, accommodation during modules and some meals; they rarely include flights, and global programmes can add $10,000–$20,000 in travel. Employer sponsorship has fallen over the past decade: schools now report that a majority of participants are fully or partly self-funded, and most offer instalment plans and loans for exactly that reason.

What should you compare before you shortlist?

Rankings are a poor first filter for EMBAs, because they reward salary increase and the composition of a class more than teaching. The criteria that decide whether a programme is right for you are mostly logistical:

CriterionWhat to ask
ScheduleAlternate weekends or block modules? How many days away from work per year, in total, including travel?
LocationsWhere are the modules actually held β€” one campus, several, or partner locations you would have to fly to?
Cohort profileAverage age, seniority, industries and nationalities of the most recent intake. Ask for the class profile document.
Electives and specialisationAre electives shared with the full-time MBA, or is the EMBA a fixed core with little choice?
Sponsorship rulesIs a letter from your employer required even if you self-fund? Some schools insist on time-release confirmation.
Alumni statusDo EMBA graduates get full alumni rights and access to the same career services as MBA alumni?
Time is the real cost. A two-year EMBA typically takes 60–80 days out of the office plus 15 hours a week of reading and group work. Model that against your role, your family and your travel schedule before you model the fee β€” the programmes with the highest drop-out rates are not the hardest ones, they are the ones whose calendar did not fit.

What usually goes wrong?

The commonest regret is picking a global programme for the brand and then finding the modules in three continents impossible to attend once a promotion arrives mid-programme. The second is treating the EMBA as a career-change tool: it is excellent for moving up or sideways within a sector, but far weaker than a full-time MBA for switching into consulting or finance, where recruiting runs through campus pipelines. The third is under-using the cohort β€” the network is the asset, and participants who skip the informal side of the programme leave with a diploma and little else.

Looking for leadership programmes shorter than a degree? Our Courses & Certifications directory covers HBS Online, Michigan and SHRM leadership certificates, and the Executive Education category lists open-enrolment programmes from the same schools.

Frequently asked questions

Is an Executive MBA the same degree as an MBA?

Yes. Graduates receive an MBA from the school; β€œExecutive” describes the format and audience, not a different qualification. A few schools print β€œExecutive MBA” on the diploma, most print β€œMaster of Business Administration”.

Do I need my employer’s permission?

Most programmes ask for a letter confirming that your employer knows about the time commitment, even when you pay yourself. Financial sponsorship is separate and increasingly rare; many participants negotiate partial support or study leave instead.

Is the GMAT required for an EMBA?

Rarely as a hard requirement. Many top programmes accept the Executive Assessment, waive tests for experienced applicants, or rely on interviews and a leadership track record instead.

How long does an Executive MBA take?

Between 14 and 24 months at most schools. Modular global programmes tend to be shorter in calendar time but denser, with week-long blocks; weekend programmes run closer to two years.

Is an EMBA worth it if I pay for it myself?

The financial case is strongest for people who intend to change employer or negotiate a senior role within a few years of graduating, and weakest for people already at the top of their organisation who want the learning alone. Schools publish salary-change data, but read it knowing that self-selection drives much of it.

How this directory is compiled

Every institution on this page was added by our editors from publicly available information: the school or university, the programme it is known for in one line, and a link to its own site. No school paid to be listed in the free section, none was asked for approval, and inclusion here is not a ranking or a recommendation β€” it is a starting point for a shortlist you should verify against the institution’s accreditation, admissions page and current fees.

The block at the top of the page is different and is labelled as such. Positions there are paid: a school or programme provider chooses a daily bid and a number of days, pays once, and sits above the free listings for that period, ordered by bid. That is advertising, it is disclosed on every listing, and it has no influence on our editorial course guides or on the Kurums Trust badges, which are earned against published criteria and are never for sale.

Tuition, formats, intake dates and rankings change every year in this sector, so we keep descriptions short and factual. Check the programme’s own page for the current fee, the accreditation body’s register for its status, and treat anything you read in a directory β€” including this one β€” as a list of candidates rather than an answer.
